His tail was not pointed at any other aircraft but rather was pointed out over the edge of the flight deck … as documented in the videos and photos of the accident. A Zuni rocket from an F-4 Phantom misfired, crossed the deck and hit McCain's Skyhawk causing the catastrophe. If the F-4 had been spotted at a different angle, the Zuni would have hit some other aircraft. I absolutely enjoy watching these old iconic aircraft from this era. The Century Series fighters were a major leap forward, and of course who can forget the F-4 Phantom II which came online in 1960 and served all the way till 1996 for the USA.

Tail Code CE belongs to Marine Attack Squadron (VMA) 225. This Video was filmed at the Squadron Hqtrs. at Cherry Point and on Carrier Quals at Pensacola in the Spring of 1964. The Squadron deployed to the Western Pacific in Oct. 1964 and Chu Lai, Viet Nam May, 1965. 54 Video's and Slide Shows have been uploaded to You Tube that covers this Deployment. Just click on VMA225.
@B1900pilot Thanks. I guess those little ramps they used to have on the bow was to keep the bridle from slapping into the ship - I'd always wondered what they were for and why they went away. The seafloor must be littered with all manner of nameless junk.
@blobusus That was the "bridle" for the launching system they used before the nosewheel towbar used on today's contemporary aircraft. So, everytime you launched in the old days you lost a bridle.

His first carrier landing is not during aircraft specific training. By the time you get your wings you have already had carrier landings. If you get selected for the tactical pipeline for today that would be F/A-18 you have already trained, and been qualified to LmS on a carrier. When you get to the platform specific training Carrier Qualification is part of that training. When you get to your first operational squadron there is more.
Sadly of the four aircraft referenced only one still remains in service...KC-130. The video here is what’s known as the RAG...Replacement Air Group. The RAG is the training for that specific aircraft and how to use it effectively. As you get a specific aircraft during military pilot training you have that aircraft for life....for the most part. A few exceptions like when the fleet gets retired then you get a new aircraft to train with. All tactical pilots get training in close air support and how to bomb enemy without killing friendly troops. The only difference is for the most part USMC tactical pilots close air support is their bread and butter and highly trained and experienced. Some pilots can go on a ground tour as a (Forward Air Controller). Which is a pilot but embedded with ground troops.
VMA-225 and 332 were not RAGS, they were regular Marine Squadrons that had expire an Ed pilots as well as new ones. I joined 332 in Jan 65 out of flat training. Got trained to fly the A-4 in not only conventional but also nuclear weapons delivery. The squadron had an assigned mission with targets in Cuba.
I am familiar with some of the lineage of 332. They were my neighbors at MCAS Beaufort, SC when I was with 224 after both of them and 533 switched to the F/A-18D Hornet in the early-mid 90’s. The comment was just a reference to modern day technology and realizing that of all the aircraft shown in the video the KC-130 is the only remaining airframe and even with that the paint scheme and even flight suits have evolved from Grey/white to two tone grey and Orange to green and tan {Desert). Hell even the helmets have given way to single Grey helmets equipped with NVG and even helmet mounted sighting. I am sure the Bullpup has probably long gone by the wayside and given way to Maverick and Hellfires.
I know it’s contrary to belief but......Lt’s don’t get to just mosey down the flight line in their drop top eyeballin all the Corps aircraft. Another thing, there is no “awww shucks, welcome buddy” check in at any Marine Corps Instillation.

I'm a Marine grunt. We looked up every time a mover was coming down and thought, God I hope it's not the Air Force again. It'd be nice to have the bombs on time on target. 😉

Why are some of the pilots wearing orange flying suits? why do these types of documentaries have personal on the “ramp” (flight line) wearing headdress? It’s seems a common theme in this eras documentaries about military aviation, but surly isn’t what was the normal practice, as anyone who has ever worked around aircraft will tell you, it would so easily destroy an aircraft is a headdress was sucked into the engine. Do A4s really sound like they are powered by a special effects persons idea of a jet aircraft from “thunderbirds” or “Captain scarlet”, they sounded normal landing on the carrier. Was stationed at Cherry Point in late 90’s and was able to drive on the flight line in my personal truck. We didn’t do it all the time but only when needed. Even parked my truck in the hangar when I had to take an aircraft to Wright Patterson AFB during a hurricane evacuation. After 9-11 that all changed.
All new Marine Officers receive a reserve commission and they have 16-18 months to challenge fellow newly commissioned officers into regular commissions. Exception of course are those who have graduated at the Naval Academy and even the top 5% of the United States Military Academy West Point and/or the top 15% of the NROTC. For the majority of Marine Officers they have to prove themselves to get a regular commission.

The Ford was a 64, and VMA 225 was the first Marine squadron at Chu Lai in 65.

The A-4 squadron (VMA-332) in this video was de commissioned in 2007 after going from the A-4 to the A-6 and finally the F/A-18D Hornet

A4 Skyhawk was a good plane...many Brits warship were sunk during Falklands war as consecuence of A4 Airstrikes!

I was USAF Vietnam 1968-69; I thanked GOD every day I wasnt a Grunt in the Marines...
I was in the Marines repairing Phantoms at a Chu Lai.
