4:15 That's a really great point, celebrities are everywhere especially in Brooklyn, but it's kinda of just like a head-nod "I know who you are, what's up" kind of thing as you pass them, rather than "OMG I NEED YOUR AUTOGRAPH".
Growing up in Park Slope, I lived down the block from Steve Buscemi, and sometimes I'd see him at like 2-3 in the morning when I was out walking my dog, and it would scare the shit out of me tbh. He is a great actor, but also a creepy looking dude to see strolling out of the fog on a deserted street at night lol

Homelessness is part of any city, live with it, it sucks of course but we’re all on a journey people, been to NYC three times and love everything I see and always learn something new! - THE BEST CITY IN THE WORLD!!!

I grew up in NYC, and still live here. Homelessness was not a issue 3 years ago. It's all thanks to the mayor.

    • @MrChillerNo1
      @MrChillerNo1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

In general yes, but there are countries that take better care of the less fortunate ones.
E.g. in Switzerland, you see drunkards and outcasts at trainstations but never with all their stuff/belonging in a cart or so, they all seem to have a save place to put their belongings. But then it's Switzerland, NYC has more inhabitants than the whole of Switzerland, and any country has their issues.
In the States I've been to Austin, Boston and NYC, where I currently live, and in every city there were homeless people, but Austin was the worst. Easily every 3rd person in daytime on the commercial streets was homeless, and every 10th was a social worker. Felt really wired shopping.
New York has its hotspots too, but due to the sheer amount of people they seem to go under in day to day life. And here most are friendly and not... let's say unpredictable, to put it nicely.
But mayor social change would be necessary to help those who have written themselves of any chance in this anti-social system.

My cousin from Peru was visiting NYC and she freaked out when she saw a large homeless person flaying their arms and taking to themself on the subway platform. I told her that is the norm. That was during pre-pandemic times. Now you need to be on your guard if you venture in the bowls of the city.

A lot of the time that's an intimidation tactic - they're trying to see if they can get you to react. Best thing to do is ignore and keep walking (but watch out of corner of eye - try to keep your distance if you can, beware of the elbow jab to ribs or stomach so they can mug you; they are trying to put you off balance so they - or a partner - can rob you).
Of course sometimes they're just off they're meds

One thing about Broadway shows, check out the preview tickets because you can often get tickets below $100! But make sure to schedule it towards the end of the preview run because the production has usually worked out any kinks by then. The previews are just a dress rehearsal for the production. Also, the previews sometimes do extra songs and scenes so you get to see more of the show! :-D

Points 8 and 9 in this vid are so relatable to my 2 trips to NYC haha. Stayed in Bed - Stuy first time and man is it a trek to get to Midtown or Central Park, didn't make that mistake next time and stayed in Astoria, went from 30 minutes to Central Park down to 10 minutes.
Also weekend subway changes, pain in the ass. Arrived on a friday night, forgot about the subway works on the weekend and tried to get the subway to WTC from Astoria. Spent half the morning changing trains because line A was now line N, line R was now line X etc etc. And the speakers in the carriage are so quiet you can't tell which is which.

The first time I visited NYC, I went to Times Square like an assumed tourist would do. I paid like $50 for next to no food at a taco spot on the strip. Then I got angry and started researching places to drink beers at a reasonable price. Walked like 10 minutes away into Hell's Kitchen area and found Rudy's Bar. Got me like 3 beers for less than $20. Do some research before eating out lol.

Hey Jon. I travelled to NYC for the first time before Covid and your videos were super helpful, I managed to avoid most tourist traps. I stayed in a hotel in Long Island City close to the E train, 15 minutes from Midtown, an ok location with more reasonable priced hotels. I saw a lot of weird people, specially in Midtown, but I think that's quite common in most big cities. Can't wait to visit again and If I see you, I'll definitely say hi. Cheers from Brazil!

Totally agree with point 8. I made the mistake of staying in the deep Bronx with 1 hour subway commute each way. In the winter, daylight is short and will possibly get snowed in. Too little hours to explore.

I’m originally from NYC but now live in Florida. I think this was fantastic advice for anyone! Great reminders for those who are familiar and excellent advice for first time visitors. I’m wondering if you have any pandemic specific tips for those of us visiting right now? I have a trip planned in May (I usually stay in midtown Manhattan). I’m planning for a ‘quiet’ trip- visits to the parks, museums but that’s about it. I usually visit GMA, go to broadway plays and just enjoy the crowds but I’m expecting a much different experience next month.

I’m totally with you my friend. “The City” is in my soul. The Army has me on lockdown for a few more years, but once I retire (at the youthful age of 46) I plan to move there for at least a year or so depending upon what I find and the overall cost of living. I don’t want to waste my savings on over-inflated rent when I can use it to travel the world instead. Your videos are always on point and when talking to people about visiting NYC that have never been, I always refer them to your channel. I plan to visit sometime this summer. I have a musician friend that’s from Brooklyn, if she has a gig someplace awesome like Tavern on the Green or Blue Note, you and the wife should join us for some music and drinks. Keep up the great work!!!

I took a train from lower Manhattan to the Bronx and I was stunned on how long it took over an hour, Ny only looks small on paper but when you do the miles for real it is massive.
Another shock in NY is the price of sporting events went to the Ice Hockey at Mad. Sq Garden paid 165 for a back stall seat. Would hate to find out what you pay for a football game at Metlife!

Don't know if they'll be working the same systems when they re-open, but day of rush tickets and lotteries are still the best way to get tickets for next to nothing like 40/50 dollars! Yeah sometimes they're partial view but you still save a tonne. Some shows do standing room at the back of the orchestra for like $30 if you're up for standing!

I'm from Oklahoma and so when I parked my big rig in Newark and took the subway across for a day in NYC I was more than a little overwhelmed. The big takeaway for me was that I had to learn how to walk again! Seriously, if you're on the sidewalk don't wait for a path forward, just walk. The crowds will part around you. That and if the sensory overload gets too big, sit on a bench and people watch. That could keep you busy for hours!

I’m visiting NYC next weekend and I do love Katz’s but I’ve seen recently that a lot of people find it overrated. :(

Can you come back and comment on what your trip was like? I’m hearing tourism is picking up again but I’m curious about other’s experiences. I’m going next month.

@@mikogianni4382 hey! I just came back from nyc and I really enjoyed it. This was my fifth time visiting the city and slowly everything is getting back to ‘normal’. Lots of places are not as packed as they used to. Overall I had a great time.

I actually like putting NYC baseball cap and walk towards characters with big smile and right past them - then again they don’t bother me 🤷‍♂️Now occasional attempts of buy my CD happens. As for fame places I still think some like Lombardi’s Pizza or Peter Luger (if can get reservation & don’t mind spending bit) worth it 😀

How would a tourist know that 500 bowery Street is on a corner? Not every tourist is gonna be proactive before they travel. Some just get up and go and that whirly spin with the camera in certain locations just happens to be bucket list material.
