  • This is actually the first part of a 1963 interview with "Perry Mason" star Raymond Burr that I posted a few days back, conducted by veteran journalist Jack Webster on the set of the series during a break in filming; the main focus of the discussion is understandably on that classic TV series.

John Edgar Webster, CM (April 15, 1918 - March 2, 1999) was a Scottish-born Canadian journalist, radio, and television personality, regarded as "king of the Vancouver airwaves"[1] from the 1950s to his retirement, in 1988.

He was so handsome and had such a sly little smile. He lost that smile in his tv movie.

This episode ( Case of the Deadly Air? not sure) gave me nightmares for years. It was seen at 9PM. Another show along the same lines, a Peter Gunn episode had an old lady in a chair lift rising up a staircase and being killed by a ceremonial axe that was hung for display above the staircase. which also did nothing for my sleep patterns. I avoided horror shows normally.

PM lost or may have entered after the trial, not sure)a capital murder case. His client was on death row. The show ended up at the same place as the original murder. PM had set up a scene where the housekeeper was blackmailing each of the suspects. It had failed and they had left the house and then he remembered that he had forgot something and returned to the house.
In the mean time the murderer was silently rising up a staircase in this brooding mansion to kill the housekeeper..........

The interviewer seemed very rude. The case they are talking about that Mason lost was "The Case of the Terrified Typist", (June 21, 1958) where his client was an imposter. Mason realized it and alerted the police. As I recall the real defendant was not dead but held prisoner. He also lost a civil case at the beginning of another episode and lost the initial verdict at the beginning of the next season's premiere but won on appeal. Burr always said that people only saw his Thursday night cases.

Perry Mason was a show which was hypothetical. It was a show for entertainment purpose. In reality in these days there is not justice in the USA.If the defendant is rich get away ,even if he is guilty, if the defendant is poor ,go to prison or death penalty, even if the defendant is inocent
