  • Scottish Travellers - Nawken in their own language - are one of Scotland's indigenous peoples. The community has been a part of Scotland's landscape, travelling the country's highways and by-ways, for at least the last nine hundred years. In this presentation Davie Donaldson, Scottish traveller advocate and social justice campaigner, will explore the ancient connection that Scottish Travellers have with the landscape, focusing on key locations (such as the Tinkers Heart) and their meaning to the community. The session will use both archival material and contemporary oral history to empower the audience to better understand Scottish Traveller history and experience within the landscape.

One of the best talks I have listened to for a long time. So glad I watched this. In a world where so many people are unhappy with their lives paying off a motgage being in debt tied to bricks and mortar we should be protecting Nawken way of life and protecting these sites that they have historically gathered. I wonder what Community Land Scotland position statement is on their remit on protecting community land for this community? Also very interested in Native Ecological Knowledge from other continents and I wonder how this relates to Nawken. We imagine that our indigenous communities long disappeared in the Uk but maybe not? Many of us long to belong to a community I hope Nawken can now build on their belonging and this is recognised and cherished in Scotland.
