Hi fotyfar. Thank you for your comment and encouragement. We are blessed with many viewers that find our escapades in gardening worth their time to watch. Your and their sport are greatly appreciated, and we learn so much from all of you. Richard often asks me how I can continue pulling weeds, knowing they will probably just grow back. LOL My answer is, it's like vacuum cleaning a really dirty rug; the results are very rewarding. Stepping back and seeing how wonderful our gardens look is a true award for doing it. 🤩 See you in the garden, Lynn & Richard www.WisconsinGarden
It is a constant battle with weeds. We have the bind weed too and many others. It is fun looking around your yard and can see so many projects you did and did videos on, the pond redo, the stepping stones, your lattice arch and planting wisteria. I looked back and thought, wow, you have been doing this for quite a long time and taking we viewers along. Thank Richard and Lynn.
That's very sweet of you Elaine to remember us and our adventures in gardening. It's fun to share what we are doing and hear what others are doing in their gardens. It amazes me that you guys are able to manage such a big garden on your own. That is a lot of work. I appreciate you sharing your struggles with crab grass and wild violets. Those darn things are in every inch of my yard, and no matter how much I dig them out , they are determined to spread. Your garden gives me inspiration. Thanks.
Hi Mary. Indeed it's a lot of work each and every day. And all I wanted was a small garden but somehow it just keep growing thanks to Richard. Now I know why some people pay to have all that work done for them. Just not our style. Now that Richard entered his 82nd year, he's actually enjoying all the hard work even more. I just have to keep him fed and watered. Cheap labor and so much better than a Cabana Boy. Thank you so very much for watching, caring and sharing. Keep The Love Growing and the air quality safe. Every time I hear bindweed, I think of you and Rick and the UK gardeners LOL And, every time someone mentioned getting some morning glory, I happily reply, no thanks .. :) Yes, prickly pears are edible. I've never grown Yarrow so I would love to get some because they're pretty. Haha, you two are cute :)
Hi Wildchook, we all know what to say once we have experienced those plants. We can add wild violets to the list as well. Not quite as bad, but a real nuisance for sure. Happy 4th Thank you for watching, caring and sharing, Keep The Love Growing and the Air Quality safe to breathe. Lynn & Richard - www.WisconsinGarden.com
Hi Lynn and Richard I've given up on eliminating all weeds, my new policy is weed management just getting rid of the most badly placed ones. I have the native violets everywhere but I like them so wherever they seed themselves is fine with me. I have a patch of native yarrow in my back yard lawn that gets bigger every year. I leave it alone when I cut the grass and I cut it back after it flowers. It's a drought here in the Pocono mts. too we finally had some rain on Tuesday and it's going to rain tonight, but we had a lot of rain last month so things are still looking good. I don't have the bindweed, but I do have the quack grass, I pulled out as much as I could then sprayed the area with 30% vinegar and covered the area with a tarp and checked the other day and I don't see it coming back. Fingers crossed. Happy gardening from the Pocono mountains Zone 6A.
I think Mother Nature enjoys challenging gardeners everywhere, especially these days with so much flying around the World through air patterns. As if it isn't tough enough keeping up with native weeds, the air brings us lots of goodies such as Canada Thistles which we've been battling for the past 6 years invading our entire NE garden areas. Hopefully, that area is now easier to control as well. As mentioned, we've been under drought conditions since early May and only receive about a 1/2 inch of rain since. We do need it badly as do many other areas. We've tested the vinegar method mixed with table salt we minor success and found a stronger vinegar through Walmart we'll also be testing elsewhere. We're also using PlantSkydd and Milorganite to fend off unwanted critters. Thank you so very much for watching, caring and sharing. Keep The Love Growing and the air quality safe. The house we built in 74 was in a corn/soybean farm, and I had very few weeds to battle in the 25 years we were there. This present home was built in 99 and the farmer was growing soybeans at the time. Our contractor was just finishing up a subdivision and he had offered us topsoil for no charge, so that he could sell the final lot, we just paid for the hauling of 21 truckloads, there wasn’t much, if any topsoil as the farmer constructed the lay of the land by accepting misc. dumps of rubble and such. Only now, another 25 years later did I remember that that “free” soil was from a sheep farmer. They eat anything and require no use of herbicides like the soybean/corn farmers do. So that is surely the reason I have had such a hard time controlling all the various weeds brought here in that 21 loads. Now at 83 I need to put some of the beds under mulch. What kind of fabric did you use? I have been advised that 5 oz. Dewitt Pro is the best, the kind the nurseries use. It is indeed expensive. But I am willing to use it if I do not have to worry so much about weed removal.
Good morning Diane. We fully understand. Our house was built in 1941 and you couldn't see the house from street level as it was completely surrounded by overgrown scrub trees and 50-60 foot evergreen trees. It took years to expose the house exterior. Don't forget air borne seed movement as well for all those unwanted invasive plants. That weed barrier sounds very familiar and most likely what Richard ordered and installed. It too, wasn't cheap and hope it lasts for many years of unwanted weed removal. I have to keep cutting them down because they reached the other side where neighbor parks her car and I don’t want to pay when I’m older to have them removed because the nuts are denting her car.
