Comparing this version to the Bangles is like comparing apples and oranges. The Bangles version is a highly polished multitracked and highly produced version. This is set up, get some levels and hit the record button. Great version by the Dum Dum Girls. Dee Dee sounds amazing as always.
"September Girls" are the girls you meet when the school semester starts, you fall madly in love, and then they dump you by winter break leaving a broken hearted "December boy" left behind. Band looks fun, love the Silvertone guitars, I had the one the lead player is playing, my first electric guitar! Cocktail drummer - way cool! You guys are fun, how I wish you were around in the 80's! Good luck!
The way I hear it, the lyrics are saying that in the month of September girls are flirty and the boys are playing hard to get, but by December the boys are not so aloof. ("September, girls do so much... ...December, boys got it bad."). The fall semester of school runs from September to December so the progression makes sense.

The Bangles' version is better than Dum Dum Girls' version.

wow, never looked at it that way, but you may be correct
BigCatD Alex Chilton had a string of girlfriends who were all (coincidentally?) born in September. That was the inspiration for the song.
Clint Murphy yea, I’m pretty sure Alex is a December boy.
BigCatD Oh! I’ve loved this song since I was 11 and yeah, your explanation makes perfect sense. Thanks.

Just pure pretty.
Wow! that was way better than the bangles. I love her voice.
certainly not!
This was not better than bangles. Bangles version was brilliant. This should be flushed down the toilet with the other shit
Dum Dum Bangles
It's not a bad cover at all but it lacks the heart of the original. I do confess to be a huge Big Star fan and may be biased.
Wonderful women!
I ment that comment in a good way.
I like a few of this band's songs but something about them strikes me as really fake and calculated.
Nice - but there is a difference between sining the song and singing the words
Crappy
murdered it, like actually fucking dreadful.
Not the best version. In fact, probably the worst.
agree
Like the lead voice, real amateur phrasing guitar work is early garage band, cheap instruments. Not polished AT ALL. Not close to the Bangles.
