Villa fan. Duran is a much more limited player - I'd keep Ollie every day of the week. 114 goal contributions in 200 games in a side that has struggled until Emery arrived. He's pure class and worth every penny of 60m.

A lot people on here seriously whining about Watkins age haven't watched football long enough. 29 is a great age to have a striker. Generally speaking late 20's-early 30's are the absolute best age bracket for strikers historically because of their maturity, the confidence and killer instinct they develop and even the leadership they tend to bring with them. Watkins is a proven goal scorer in the prime of his career.

I would welcome Watkins and obviously wish him well, but he won't be the superstar, world-class striker that many Arsenal fans are crying out for. He will not take us to that 'next level' we desire. I'd rather we wait until the summer and put the money towards a bid for Gyokeres, personally.
£60m is embarrassing for one of the top strikers in the prem. Arsenal have shot themselves in the foot by paying £100m for Rice and £65m for Havertz. Watkins gives you goals so they’ll have to pay £85m+

The fact that Arsenal has occupied one of their ONLY TWO domestic loan spots with a backup keeper who never plays is a huge mark of how little Arteta trusts his youth academy. Surely there are good enough young keepers there that you wouldn't need to bring in a loanee keeper just to warm the bench

- Watkins makes the most sense (given Isak is way out priced) because we need a plug and play forward - knows the league, home grown, covers saka’s goals and assists stats, even at 29, he’s in his prime - he wasn’t one of those 18yr old wonder kids who plays his whole career before 30, he can def play at a high level for another 3 years. Also means the other ST can be a younger player (Sesko) who would have time to settle and then take over.
That being said, I can’t see villa selling, but I suspect the theory that arsenal are actually after another player to force a choice is most likely the case.

I believe this bid for Watkins is just an eye wash by the Arsenal board. If they were really serious they wouldn't have waited till the end of January to make their bid. In my opinion they've just done this to tell the fans that they tried in case they are unable to sign anyone in January.

Going for a young forward from a foreign league risks adaptment issues. You see Hojlund over at Manchester United, Nunez at Liverpool, Werner and Nkunku at Chelsea as recent examples of hyped players that ended up struggling to make the step up to the Premier League.
The Arteta project has chugged along for about 5 years, turning them from a club fighting for Europe to a club that is in the running for the title. What the club needs to land that elusive and coveted title is a player (or a few) that is the finished article.
Watkins, like current dream signing in Isak, is Premier League proven. However, the fees involved with signing the former is not expected to be as exorbitant. Much has been said about Arsenal needing a top striker, and this is advantageous to Newcastle since they don't need to and don't want to sell. Arsenal is taking the initiative to solve the missing striker problem by moving for Watkins. If both a 60-70 mil Watkins and 100-120 mil Isak (prices approx) can solve the problem, why wait and overspend?
2-3 years of prime Watkins is more than enough time to nurture youth talent, or for new names to pop up

Villa knows that Arsenal must sign a striker so they're willing to push for more, they're definitely not refusing to sell Watkins as a principle.

The two strikers just can't play along with Unai's tactics and it's not fair for both of them to accept being benched.
Aston Villa also needs to sell one of them for financial reasons as they can replace him easily before the cloture of the market, they are linked with many cheap and decent strikers, while they can also loan someone like Ferguson if they're targeting a bigger fish in the summer.
Duran is 23 , Watkins is 29... Arsenal which are panicking right now or any other club would never pay such price for Watkins in the future, while Duran would attract the same amount or more again and again from the PL,Saudi and from everywhere.
