Really great lesson. Thank you! B flat has always been a challenge for me. I've started trying to play some basic solos in G from that position, but just moving it up to B flat did sound funky like you said. Never occurred to me to play from the same position from the B flat on the A string!
wow i’ve been playing guitar for 30 years and started messing around with-mandolin chord strumming and was looking for this exact video to work off chord positions to try some lead. This is really clearly explained, thanks a lot man! I will check out you other video. I greatly appreciate it!
Watched this one tonight. Need to work on it lots. I noticed at your Columbus concert in summer, how so many of your songs are in Bb, probably because of Russel's singing range. Getting ready for an all afternoon jam tomorrow. Thanks, g'night.
Took me a bit to follow what shape is being discussed, but I think I understand: we’re basing the position on the root and fifth of the chord, with the root on one string and the fifth on the string below, but two frets up. You build your muscle memory around this and then you learn what else happens in this position. The fifth above the root note is just one string down on the same fret, for example. And you can easily transfer this position to whatever key you need to play in. If you’re in C you just find the root on the A string and go from there.
You got it Mark. This closed position makes it possible to play in all keys and tranpose solos to accommodate vocalist who need to sing a song in a different key.
This is exactly the problem I've been working through lately, and it was really helpful to see it expanded on and teased apart a bit! Thanks as always, Wayne!
Hey Dean. I don't own a camera pal! These vidoes are recorded and edited on my Galaxy S10e. I make the thumbnails and manage TH-cam studio from the phone as well. Very low budget......
@@waynesworldofmandolin3616 well I thought about the budget as an after thought and I total understand. I'll just watch the videos several times until I know I have it down. Thanks Wayne
Hey Tomas, thx for the comment. The music you here on WWoM is all original stuff that I wrote. None of the tunes have names and I create it to avoid copyright issues when I upload content.
Good eye Michael! That cabinet came outta my sisters laundry room and I built a frame for it and used it as a floor unit. Guess I should move the handles to the top of the doors at some point.
That opening song is just a piece of me improvising over a backing track I found here on TH-cam. It doesn't have a title and has never been officially recorded in a studio. It's basically me goofin off here at home during Covid. Thx for the comment!
Great lesson, Wayne. But either your hands are a lot bigger than mine, or your mandolin is a lot smaller than mine. My fingers just can't span that many frets, so I often have to just use the top 3 strings.
I’m going to go pick up my mandolin in a second. Did you ever come back to this with more detail on the note by note scale choices for this position?EDIT I’m getting good enough to figure some stuff out. Just put my fingers in place on the position you showed and worked out the scale notes for I Saw The Light.Whoopee.
You must have to know essentially everything talked about here already to make use of this lesson. I see a bunch of folk did but all I got was look at my fingers and listen to me solo. The scale positions changed based on the the key and without knowing all the licks and scale position changes for the sharps and flats I am not sure what I am supposed to get other than the power chord shape. I am sure its just me, any help appreciated.
That's how the channel works. If I move over a topic rather quickly in a video it's because you'll find other video's here that cover it in more detail. Looking at the Playlist should help you locate the content you need. Hope this helps....
I will ad that to my list of video request. Response has been great so far with a lot of people emailing video request. Thx for checking out the channel and being engaged!
I've been playing for years. Never could get that particular sound down .. I think I can now .. thanks.. BTW , that Mandolin has an awesome ring to it .. what brand is that F5 ?
Thx for the comment Jerry! I'm glad you liked this video. The mandolin is a McClanahan. Check out my video Unboxing a McClanahan here on the channel......
Nice lesson however, you show the root in the fifth as the starting point, but it would’ve been helpful if you would’ve pointed out the other notes that you are playing around with as well. You got us all started, but did not outline the next steps. Maybe the next video!
Thx for the comment. Check out my video on Chain Triads here on the channel. It might be exactly what you're looking for. I have a playist called Learn the Fretboard that could be very useful. Sure hope this helps.
There is no specific companion video for this, maybe try some vids from the beginner playlist and then revisit this one. Hope this helps Steve and thx for the comment and support!
I've been playing guitar most my life and recently(about 2 weeks ago) got a mandolin just because I want to expand musically. I've learned most major chords already and improvise/jazz around from chord to chord... which can figured out because of my guitar experience. I can say that Wayne's videos (this is the 2nd one I've watched via TH-cam suggestions) help nearly instantly if you are an already seasoned guitar player. Thank you Wayne.
Yep, it was. I've made several different intros and they continue to get shorter. I started this channel during the Covid-19 lock down and it seemed like a reasonable length at the time. Hard to believe we experienced a season when we weren't all in a hurry.....
Wayne Benson is not only a great Mandolin Picker, but also a great Mandolin Teacher ! 👏👏👏👏
The mandolin is a space alien to me. Today is hour one of day one. You have already inspired me to continue on. Thank you.
That makes my day! Thanks for the comment.
Most I ever learned about mandolin playing without being anywhere near my mandolin.
I love it when that happens! Thx!
Yup I’m right there with ya but I saved it so I’ll be back 😂
Watched this about 6 times now. Learned something new every time, plus some nice licks. Thanks Wayne!
Thx for watching Barry. Glad this was a help....
"I hope these videos help"
Yes... yes they do. Thank you!
Great video I keep watching it over and over see something new each time!
Awesome! Thank you!
EXCELLENT TUTORIAL ! THANK YOU !
Great video! Love this kind of lesson. Transferable and adaptable tricks are the best.
Glad you enjoyed it!
There is so much good info packed into this video
Thx for that comment. This is by far the most viewed video on WWoM.
Best lesson I’ve seen. I have watched this one several times, learn something new each visit!
Wow, thanks!
You are a brilliant teacher you really make it accessible to everyone to learn thank you ❤
Wow, thank you!
The whole fretboard is opening up for me. Thanks Wayne

Loved this one Wayne. Another veggie to eat.
Thank you Wayne. I kinda did this using an approach that was explained to me as "skip a fret". This made much more sense.
I'm glad to hear that Danny. This is by far my most viewed video. Check out my Rythm in all Keys follow up if you didn't already.....

Yep. There are a lot of bluegrass songs that suit his voice in that key. I love the sound of a banjo with the capo on the 3rd or 4th fret.
nice-- a lot of mileage covered in a brief span. Thanks!
Don't worry about the low budget camera, looks & sounds great. Thanks for sharing your talent & knowledge.
These Smartphones are amazing for sure. The early videos I shot were with the mic on the phone but I did upgrade to a great mic and pre-amp....

Wayne, many thanks. It has been absolutely useful for me. The exact point to continue in bluegrass. I was completely stucked.
Awesome! Glad you're not stuck pal. Choose a standard and learn it in every key.....

Be sure your fingers are approaching the fretboard at a healthy angle, this can make a world of difference. Good luck.....

This was definately not a video for beginners
It's never to early in the learning process to be exposed to the concept of transposing closed positions to enable playing in different keys.
