    "If you think this year's election is pretty insane, well, it is."
    I've been paying attention to presidential elections since 1984 and I've been a political junkie since 1988. This is the strangest election I've ever seen.

      +BrotherAlpha You obviously don't remember why Perot dropped out of the election, which by the way ensured Clinton's election. He CLAIMED his family was threatened.
      After the election, Perot's company was awarded a multimillion $ payroll contract by the Federal government.

      I've followed politics avidly since 1960. I've never been this concerned. I only voted for one Republican candidate for president (he lost) but other than a general worry about electing Dick Cheney-sorry, Dubya-I never felt any of the candidates were dangerous. Yes, Sarah Palin was scary as hell, but no one, even in his own party thought McCain could win. Now I listen to Donald Trump and cringe at his racism. misogyny and insane ideas, but most of all at his tiny little vocabulary and inability to articulate beyond me=great, them=bad. He can't match the soaring oratory of an average. kind hearted six year old. Lord the man is a total head case.

    Of course all this ads seem crazy out of their historical context. I was a child in the eighties, so I have a grasp of what were the fears of people during the Cold War. We really thought that a nuclear war would happen anytime. So the bear representing the USSR, or the nuclear bomb interrupting the day of a little girl didn't seem crazy. It was something very real and possible. I like your channel, you can do better.

      i legitimatly did not connect that bear to being russia.

  • @flibnit1
    @flibnit1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Pretty sure Cracked knows the bear was Russia. It was supposed to be sarcasm, but the effectiveness of that sarcasm depends on everyone knowing that the bear was Russia. Which we didn't. So either you miss the joke or you assume the writers were idiots. So either way, they didn't really think this one through. Unless their target audience is EXCLUSIVELY all-knowing history buffs. In which case, well done.

    • @WalterLiddy
      @WalterLiddy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree- when he says "because metaphor", he's acknowledging that the bear represents something. It's the vaguery of the narration he seems to find amusing.

    Marketer here. Doesn't necessarily prove insanity, just proves that integrated comm's that deviate from the norm (i.e. break away from clutter) actually do stand out, are more memorable and given the right touch points & timing, can manipulate perceptions in your favor. Once your out of this world ad gets mindshare, its an easy road.

    The Bear was the symbol of the Soviet Union, so that Reagan ad was a metaphor about the Cold War, and preparing for war with Russia.

    The Reagan ad was pretty simple to understand. The bear is Russia - our chief rival/adversary/alley (sort of). This was something I understood back then when I was 7.

    Daniel O'Brien would make an awesome Vice President. Of course Jack would have to spend a good portion of his time convincing Daniel that he has to travel to another country and interact with other people, but once he does, he'd be a hit. I can see him now, discussing pop culture with foreign Head of States. I image drunk Daniel O'Brien does sings a lot of Karaoke.

    Dukakis was a strange guy, he didn't make directly opposing ads to Bush, he just made weird attack ads that weren't attack ads like the one shown in this video. Which is why he got blown the fuck out

    What's even weirder is that a woman later perpetrated a hoax claiming to be the girl in the Daisy ad & the real woman who appear as a child actor in the ad wasn't rediscovered until later.

    The bear is a metaphor for Russia, which had made half of Europe a "host colony" after WWII. There were regular "jousts" of military assets with what was then called the "Free World", the gulags held millions, the Russian premier stood before the UN, pounding his shoe on the podium, proclaiming "We will bury you", and the Cuban Missile Crisis (the brink of a nuclear WWII) was only 30 some years past. We did not have attention and memory spans conditioned by Poke-x, or "replay conditioning" from game consoles, and we remembered both the danger, and replay-absent conditions that all of that environment entailed. Apparently, the mistake made in your formative and adolescent years was to remove all "scary - stressful - judgemental - etc" elements from your environment that might cause you to have a "trauma". It has also made you a smarmy, know-nothing, little jerk of a twerp that sees no value in the serious and costly actions people took to provide that coddled environment, to you. And now you lecture US on how it was back then. That is the ultimate in temerity, and you will pay for it when your fantasy bubble collapses.

    The first ad doesn't make sense to those born post-Cold War, including myself, because we don't understand the Soviet Union, the Iron Curtain, the "bear," and the Cold War in general...

  • @poppyseed1987
    @poppyseed1987 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Reagan ad makes complete sense. The bear represents Russia and the ad proposes that the country should have a president as strong as the bear. The, "if there is a bear" thing is weird but other than that the metaphor would make complete sense to an audience living through the cold war.

    I thought the “Agnew Laugh” and “Daisy” ads were effective. Humiliation and fear are strong motivators (unfortunately), so the idea that Agnew was so bad that all you needed was someone laughing is pretty humiliating to someone on the fence. The Daisy Ad only ran once, but it was a clever way to motivate Democrats to go to the polls. Some historical context for the Daisy Ad: there was a massive debate about how much force we should use in Vietnam. The Right wanted to pave North Vietnam and be home by Christmas. Unfortunately, China and Russia might decide to turn the Cold War into a Hot War if we did.
