Found HIM! That one douche who goes around typing "Underrated" in comments. Mean Gene is unique and deceiving . He is beloved and adored by millions around the world. He was the most sought after interviewer by 4 different organizations. He was in a movie. He was in music videos. He was in a bunch of commercials. He wrote a book. He worked for 40 years. His WWF outtakes alone has 10 million views!! New generations are discovering him And finally Mean Gene Okerlund is inducted in the Wrestling Hall of Fame Underrated?? .......Jeeezuz
Mean Gene also had great interviews with Macho Man Randy Savage. And, his bloopers, when he would crack up and turn away from the camera, were always hilarious.
I had dinner with Mean Gene once and he was the most gracious and delightful man one could ever meet! He was a virtual encyclopedia of wrestling and was hilarious. RIP Mean Gene.
Gene has such an amazing voice. Same with JR. Bobby is more remembered for his antics, which were great. That said just hearing Gene talk takes me back and love it. Great interview. Gene was one hell of a person on so many levels.
This was one of the best interviews I have seen, great work! People will still know this man's name in 100 years when wrestling as we know it may not be around. His interviews were outstanding viewing!
Wow he can really tell a story and has so much passion!! I loved him and Bobby Heenan so much! I wonder if they get sick of telling stories? Because I love hearing them. I would be so respectable with this guy.
One of my favorite stories about Mean Gene was the one Kevin Nash told where they shared a plane ride and just talked and had drinks. When they landed Gene asked when Kevin's flight was and they spent another hour and a half in the bar
My mount rushmore of announcer/play by play voices from my childhood is Gene, Ernie Harwell, Bob Cole, & Vin Scully. I could listen to any of them talk/tell stories for hours.
He has one of them voices like You know you just know it. Like Casey Kasem. Just a legendary voice! Love this interview good stuff thx for the content!
@someguy9471 43 here. The funny thing is the phone book is still a thing but it looks like a little paper back novel now instead of the beast it used to be.
It's crazy that he just talks exactly how he did on TV. Like imagine just hanging out with him and he's just saying normal stuff in that voice. Like he says something like "I can't find my reading glasses. I remember having them in the kitchen, but I might have brought them upstairs. I don't want to go up those stairs and they're not there."
One could argue he was the voice of pro wrestling. AWA, WWF and WCW. The best interview guy EVER. Makes Byron Saxton look like a amateur working his first indy show! 😂 RIP Mean "whooooo, by- God" Gene!!"
As someone who was born in 84' and grew up only watching The NWA and WCW, it's so disappointing to hear how awful everything was behind the scenes. When I was a kid, you not have EVER convinced me that the WWF was bigger and better than WCW. Sting, Flair, LOD, Vader and the Steiner brothers were IT!!!
@daveh1065 of The Man They Call Sting was it for us. They'll not never be a nutter nair nother mother lover like the Stinger.🤣 He was freaking way, way cooler than Hogan, and his leg drop. 🙄 Gay
After Bobby Heenan's WWE HoF speech, Gene Okerlund said he could listen to Bobby The Brain all day long. Gene, we think the same of you. RIP Eugene Arthur Okerlund and thanks for being wrestling's Mean Gene.
Gene gave the eulogy at Verne's funeral, and Greg was one of the few from the industry who actually went to pay respects to Gene's loved ones when he passed. Seems any hard feelings were laid to rest long before Gene passed. God bless him.
I grew up listening to Mean Gene and he was truly a gem in the wrestling business who made some of the best interview material you'll ever see which was hilarious seeing this little balding man standing next to these huge wrestlers who would do some really slapstick antics with Gene to flip him. One of my favorites is the Iron Sheik turkey in the cage comparing Hulk Hogan to the turkey which you will lose your ribcage.
It's partly due to the rise of streaming, but wrestling is no where near as popular as it was from the early 90's to the late 90's. It will take a whole cultural shift for it to get back to that level of popularity, but now with social media so prevalent, I'm not it will be anytime soon
It is interesting that Gene mentioned Pat Patterson and his habit of being cheap. I am sure that comes from his childhood which IIRC was very impoverished but Pat ended up working for the WWE literally up to the day he died, never retiring. I am sure Pat's family is enjoying all that money he saved throughout his working life. It is also interesting how long Pat had a behind the scenes job, there are two generations now that never saw him wrestle. May both Gene and Pat RIP.
I coupe fall asleep watching this every night, I have enjoyed these so much over the past few years, I'm glad I never watched them when they were recorded. If the guest gives a short answer, and pauses they should keep the mouth shut and allow them to elaborate further .... Instead of jump in and ask another question as if they aren't listening to the answer and are just going down a list of questions .... Few I ow how to pull it off... Kayfabe commentary WSI... HANNIBAL, not his side kick, Devon does it well. And obviously these guys, they must have a long standing or fairly intimate relationship, as if they've had a weekend on the piss together ...
Stu was very knowledgeable but his training methods were sadistic. If Stu would have had a bit of self control and would have known when to let off of people while teaching them basic wrestling moves I think he would have had a lot more students and maybe had been able to keep his wrestling promotion going longer. I suspect things deteriorated to the point where he couldn't get people to work for him knowing what laid in store for them in Stu's basement. The sadism was unnecessary, people can learn how to wrestle without needing a boatload of morphine after each lesson.
RIP to the late-great Mean Gene Okerlund

Mean Jean is a national treasure! One of many personalities that encapsulated my pop culture childhood growing up in the 80s.
I grew up with Mean Gene.
I was in my early teens, and now I'm in my early 50s. Rest in peace.
I love how he got his name that was mean gene 😂
You commented 2 months ago yet you grew up with dude.... he was 76 when he died in 2019????? Please explain

No doubt about it mean gene was the best he and hulk Hogan had great chemistry in their interviews

Cigarette smoking killed him, it should have been banned 50 years ago.
What a voice!!! Such great memories as a kid in the 80s watching this guy and wrestling in general.
What a voice. Who doesn't miss Mean Gene?
Apparently his so called boys in the business....D.D.P. said like 7 ppl showed up 😢for his funeral.
He really was a symbol of such a fun era of professional wrestling. Yes, I miss him.
All American Wrestling with Gene was so good.
What an absolutely incredible talker. One of the greatest of all time. RIP
Wow what a good way to pass 2 and a half hours time
Well...I guess we've got another 2 and a half hours in the Crown Room
It gets even better than that. I’m having a dump at the same time.
Right?

Mene Gene and Hogan where always together in the 80s and early 90s
Where Hulk went, Gene followed! Hogan had a lot of pull when in new territories.. Gene was a part of the deal
Hey you think he would have showed up for the guys awake!

Very disrespectful that only a handful of WWF Superstars showed up for his wake and Hogan wasn't one of them.
Seriously? That's bad if it's true. Mean Gene and also the Brain are missed, even here thousands of miles away.

Gene was such a classy fella!
Based on this interview both Ric Flair and Mean Gene truly lived their gimmick.
Here in the UK they are selling DVDs of WWE for as little as one POUND it shows how the interest in WWE nowandays as from the 90s and early 2000s
Because nobody hardly buys DVDs anymore
