The present building dates from the 18th century, although there is evidence that there was a church on the same site more than 1,600 years ago. Many say it bears a resemblance to St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Inside Peterskirche The interior of the church is one of the most ornate in the city, full of statues and ornate decorations with gilded details. St. Peter's Church in Vienna has an oval floor plan crowned by a dome with frescoes depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
