In the era of Sinnead and Tori, there were other distinctive voices , women and men, and emerging inbetweens. I've noticed an evolution or gradual changing in the kind of voices I've been hearing since the sixties. In the late 80's and early 90's when Sinnead was so hugely big and popular, it was the uniqueness of her voice, I think, and the irresistible songs with their fantastic choruses and bridges and what not. Recently I saw a man on you tube who had been given a hero commendation from the local police for saving a life, acting bravely, I can't remember the specifics ( this was about a year ago) but he's a black American man, and he was interviewed by media and it struck me how he rebuffed the hero medal they were giving him, and instead talked about the brutality and racism of police all over the country and maybe he'd done a good thing, but he downplayed that and said that 'riots work ' ... That really hit me. I guess when Sinnead ripped up the photo of the pope, it was pretty divisive and was more than the mainstream pop machine could easily absorb. I thought she'd done something bold, brave, risky, angry and well founded in it's general message to the Catholic Church ( and maybe to all other oppressive corrupt organized religions ) so I didn't stop loving her. She just faded back and we lost her, more or less. How far before her time was she, though, calling out for the Catholic Church to be properly indicted for their massive crimes of abuse and assault and worse over the centuries? Surely we can see the difference between being good and moral and kind to each other, versus being , as Monty Python would put it " Fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency and a fanatical devotion to the pope" ( if you recall a little incident called the Spanish Inquisition, just for starters. You could look at residential school crimes in the new world, you could look at Mt. Cashel, etc ) So I think Sinnead was on pretty solid ground, there in New York city, making her statement like that. I think she was saying ' kill this kind of heirerarchical nonsense. Kill this stupid title, not 'kill this person'. That's how I took it anyway. Let's get rid of the bullshit. We're already good enough to be blessed by all kinds of good things without the say so from the man with the black and white costume.

what really has gone on in this world? in the Industry(ies)? how much do "fans" know about the ppl they "adore"? worthy questions. could even be lifetimes of diligent work.
Had to listen a few times, but this is what I got: “She warned us of the abuse in the church, and most of the world did not listen, and she was right. And we’re dealing with it still today. This is a person who was powerful, who wrote incredible music, and we honor her tonight.”
Yes, she makes reference to Her outing the Church. What so many forget is that the ''Industry'' and especially in the US' blackballed her for 'Outing the Church', and her career at the time nose dived, her Management thought it was over as so many castigated her for tearing up the Picture of the then Pope on Live TV. Takes more than just conviction to go on live TV in NYC of all places and rip up a Picture of the Head of the Catholic Church. Did not always agree with her but she had a Stage Presence that very few performers ever command and for her music she will never be forgotten
