I moved to the UK from Hong Kong around 2 years ago now and to say im adapted is an understatement. My life has changed forever and I constantly watch videos of food videos in Hong Kong and miss my family constantly. Went to Uni in US for Bachelor's in Bio and Pre-med; found myself devastated for a long time since I lived in a joint family for 18 years & went straight abroad alone. Everything was new and a step out of comfort zone. But I can confirm it was one of the best decisions of my life. I went from US to UK for masters and completed it with Merit and now I'm working in my home country to contribute to its medical research, until I get a PhD position. Thanks again brother. Wow, you speak great English, much better than I. Did you study in int'l schools when you were in HK? I got my PhD from Cambridge and have lived in the US for more than two decades. Unfortunately I still speak English with a strong HK accent.

Thank you for making this video! I hope I can be like you in a few months time, at ease and happy in my new surroundings like you. I've left Hong Kong last September and felt terribly homesick in the first weeks. I gradually learnt how to regulate my emotions in a more effective way :) but then I returned home for Christmas and when the new term commenced, the tears came again... honestly, if I have to deal with this every time I return to school... I don't know if I should go back and study in an HK international school or continue my studies here🙇♀

They really are, but it's important to look forwards and stay positive. It's difficult to be in a foreign place and so isolated, and it takes courage to stay strong. But things get better!

What doesn't kill you will always make you stronger. Human like animals will evolve and adapt to their new environment. By the same sentence, the new challenges also killed or destroyed some who can't adapt to new environment. If you think its a challenge for you as an individual young and strong 18 year old guy to adapt to your new environment, what you think the challenges for those in 40s or 50s with children to adapt to new environment ?.

Naturally the initial adjustment will be difficult, people are resistant to change and moving is consider by many a bad experience. Community does work. When I moved from Hong Kong to Canada, I was very stressed because I am gonna miss my old friends, but when we came, I started a TH-cam channel, and made some internet friends, and I also reached my biggest dream (I know how to play You Raise Me Up by Westlife on my piano)

Nice to hear your story. I had a similar experience when I left India and traveled for work in Dubai! Learned a lot there that made me an independent person with a broad perspective on life. I'm retired in the Philippines now and enjoying every moment of it. Visited HK too with my family and enjoyed going to Disneyland and eating street food in Tsim sat sui! Also traveled by bullet train from HK to Guanzhou on a brief holiday and was amazed by the development there! Wishing you all the very best in the future! God Bless!

I am a 30-yr old Research Engineer considering to move to the UK from Hong Kong. I have been to both Canada and Singapore for my Education since the age of 14. I am pretty accustomed to a life living overseas. My advice to you from someone who is an Industrial Engineer at Hong Kong is...don't come back to Hong Kong. The climate here has changed tremendously since my first internship here in 2011. We are becoming much more reliant on Chinese technology, and this trend has already started long before the sociopolitical (e.g. umbrella) movements. Due to the pandemic, we are also getting less foreigners interested in working here due to the lack of mobility. I can see the trend of de-globalization pretty clearly from someone who is working in industry. These are my reasons. Don't come back.
@@wassim-bz7wj Being a doctor means you're at the top of your social ladder in Hong Kong. With the environment nowadays, HK is actually losing their global competitiveness. I would bet my money on Singapore, as it is an English speaking country. Hong Kong is just another Chinese city. If you don't speak Chinese, it's going to cause many problems if you're personally dealing with patients. This is just my personal take. Go consult actual doctors working in HK.
@@wassim-bz7wj Information is power. You have to gather more information from different people. Housing price is extremely high here, and the first thing you will notice is the rent. I can live in Canada, USA and UK with 25 - 33% less in Cost. From my observation, most doctors here are locals usually educated from US, UK, Australia and Canada.

For me, it was so exciting. So many radio stations, and the DJs were hilarious. So many newspapers were full of wisdom. So many restaurants and coffee shops, each has its charm. So many supermarkets and the rolls of food were so colourful (when you next visit the supermarket, the same batch of food with a new expiry date). So many good libraries readily present you the knowledge of the past and future. So many parks to walk and get things in your mind sorted out. Just the walk itself was so spiritually calming. So many politicians and they were so argumentative. Life was never boring in the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is safe too. If something happens to you, everyone will rush to you, and an ambulance will arrive quickly. When you see a doctor, they pay full attention to every sign you experience. Just be grateful you are in one of the most civilised societies. Just embrace their values, and you will one day realise you will become part of them. You will be thrilled when the nation has made some achievements. You will cry and mourn with everyone when there is a disaster. Whatever your religion might be, you will find comfort in their worship and prayers. After some years, you'll find your soul British.

The resentment came from your parents, not the new country. Most Chinese seem to have this and are super rude in new countries for that reason. Elkhart Tolle would call this a ‘collective pain body’ from a traumatic history. “I carry my families hearts and feelings”. What you need to do is forgive your parents and your culture for teaching you wrong and be ‘born again’ as Christians say, which Hindus call ‘Samsara’. It sounds like you have mostly done that, which is great, as most people don’t. I had to encounter a very painful ego death in order to have this realisation. The last thing is letting go of all resentment handed down from your family (which you first need to see that they handed it down to you). Then you can be fully happy.
It's crazy. The more you learn about the world, the more I feel more Chinese. We got harassed and bullied all the time from grade school to the workplace, the blacks, the whites, the hispanics, you name it all. There's nothing to brag the white culture. I have to act like a white boy all the time at the workplace to fit in. I can't wait to move back to Huadu Guangzhou China to retire. Sick and tire all the racism in the US. I hear a lot of similar views. Is the opportunity there or the future potential worth taking the leap of faith. Naturally the initial adjustment will be difficult, people are resistant to change and moving is consider by many a bad experience. Community does work. When I moved from Hong Kong to Canada, I was very stressed because I am gonna miss my old friends, but when we came, I started a TH-cam channel, and made some internet friends, and I also reached my biggest dream (I know how to play You Raise Me Up by Westlife on my piano)
Glad to hear your story and settling in the UK. I'm sure the exposure in another country makes you a better person. As a Dr. you should consider working in Hong Kong since the pay will be a lot better.

Nice to hear your story. I had a similar experience when I left India and traveled for work in Dubai! Learned a lot there that made me an independent person with a broad perspective on life. I'm retired in the Philippines now and enjoying every moment of it. Visited HK too with my family and enjoyed going to Disneyland and eating street food in Tsim sat sui! Also traveled by bullet train from HK to Guanzhou on a brief holiday and was amazed by the development there! Wishing you all the very best in the future! God Bless!

I am a 30-yr old Research Engineer considering to move to the UK from Hong Kong. I have been to both Canada and Singapore for my Education since the age of 14. I am pretty accustomed to a life living overseas. My advice to you from someone who is an Industrial Engineer at Hong Kong is...don't come back to Hong Kong. The climate here has changed tremendously since my first internship here in 2011. We are becoming much more reliant on Chinese technology, and this trend has already started long before the sociopolitical (e.g. umbrella) movements. Due to the pandemic, we are also getting less foreigners interested in working here due to the lack of mobility. I can see the trend of de-globalization pretty clearly from someone who is working in industry. These are my reasons. Don't come back.

@@wassim-bz7wj Being a doctor means you're at the top of your social ladder in Hong Kong. With the environment nowadays, HK is actually losing their global competitiveness. I would bet my money on Singapore, as it is an English speaking country. Hong Kong is just another Chinese city. If you don't speak Chinese, it's going to cause many problems if you're personally dealing with patients. This is just my personal take. Go consult actual doctors working in HK.

@@wassim-bz7wj Information is power. You have to gather more information from different people. Housing price is extremely high here, and the first thing you will notice is the rent. I can live in Canada, USA and UK with 25 - 33% less in Cost. From my observation, most doctors here are locals usually educated from US, UK, Australia and Canada.

For me, it was so exciting. So many radio stations, and the DJs were hilarious. So many newspapers were full of wisdom. So many restaurants and coffee shops, each has its charm. So many supermarkets and the rolls of food were so colourful (when you next visit the supermarket, the same batch of food with a new expiry date). So many good libraries readily present you the knowledge of the past and future. So many parks to walk and get things in your mind sorted out. Just the walk itself was so spiritually calming. So many politicians and they were so argumentative. Life was never boring in the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It is safe too. If something happens to you, everyone will rush to you, and an ambulance will arrive quickly. When you see a doctor, they pay full attention to every sign you experience.
Just be grateful you are in one of the most civilised societies. Just embrace their values, and you will one day realise you will become part of them. You will be thrilled when the nation has made some achievements. You will cry and mourn with everyone when there is a disaster. Whatever your religion might be, you will find comfort in their worship and prayers. After some years, you'll find your soul British.

The resentment came from your parents, not the new country. Most Chinese seem to have this and are super rude in new countries for that reason. Elkhart Tolle would call this a ‘collective pain body’ from a traumatic history.

What you need to do is forgive your parents and your culture for teaching you wrong and be ‘born again’ as Christians say, which Hindus call ‘Samsara’.
It sounds like you have mostly done that, which is great, as most people don’t. I had to encounter a very painful ego death in order to have this realisation.
The last thing is letting go of all resentment handed down from your family (which you first need to see that they handed it down to you).
Then you can be fully happy.

It's crazy. The more you learn about the world, the more I feel more Chinese. We got harassed and bullied all the time from grade school to the workplace, the blacks, the whites, the hispanics, you name it all. There's nothing to brag the white culture. I have to act like a white boy all the time at the workplace to fit in. I can't wait to move back to Huadu Guangzhou China to retire. Sick and tire all the racism in the US. I know Chinese people like me ain't inferior to the white ghost for sure.

Living in the US with all the crime and anti-Asian violence is moving to western countries worth it? My family and I live in NYC with the thought we will be attacked in the subways for being Asian and wonder is this the same fear as you had when you lived in HK. I would welcome living in a nanny state if I feel protected from the violence including gun violence that is prevalence here.
