I watch this video every couple of months and it will never get old - I played sax for 7 years so I'm no where near this level but I do understand the technical ability and it takes to pull this off as a performance but your lycricism of the melody was genius and spirit filled... AMEN!! thank you!
I used to play sax in middle school but after seeing this video.... man.... u just got me motivated more to play the sax again... I was just scrolling through Christian Sax players and man you are blessed!!! God bless you and you musical talents!
You my friend Jermaine was the main reason that i have darted playing the sax . True inspire for me at the age of 40 . Now i am 43 and still jamming !!!!!!!!!!
Jermaine it was a pleasure getting to meet you as you mixed and mastered my freshman cd entitled E.T.A. Your personality and spirit are as awesome as this great gift of music ministry. I want to thank you againfor the Beechler Custom that you gave me. I thank you for playing on my album too!! Sir you are a blessing to the Body of Christ!!
Praise the Lord my brother Jermaine, It was a blessing speaking to you the other day. Praise the the Lord for your music ministry... You are truly anointed and your playing and style has inspired not only me, but others also .... Your love and passion for Christ comes out in your music... What a blessing.. I am looking forward to your CD when it is available... Praise the LORD!!!!!!!
ive just picked up a sax after wanting to learn one for YEARS,ive watched a few vids on here but you are by far the best and my new insperation :) you play beautifully...keep up the good work. Peace syks
Thanks man!!! In this video I'm playing on a Yamaha Custom Z Black with a Belmonte #7 mouthpiece. I'm now playing on a Beechler Bellite Custom #7 mouthpiece (it sounds about the same but has a little more soul). I've been playing for about 23 years now and it makes me feel really old to say that!!! Yes I did go to school for music. I went to Lincoln University in Jefferson City Mo. I was a music ed major, but loved playin too much to stick with teaching. Jermaine
How are you doing? I have been playing for about the same amount of time, but nowhere near your skill level. I just wanted to find out some tools to use to get better, be able to improvise, not to mention hit those altissimo notes more effortlessly? Hopefully you will see this. Thanks in advance.
I know what you mean as a loud COGIC church. I've been playing in the church for 4 years now and I'm finally doing something other than squaking in a corner.
@j2sax I attend Christ Church in downtown Muskogee, Ok. The address is 211 W. Broadway Muskogee, Ok 74401. We meet Sunday mornings at 11am. I used to come through Springfield all the time (not so much anymore). We'd love to have you come by!!!
Dude, you have got an awesome sound and your control over the horn is amazing! You can really scream out the high notes as well! Every time I try the notes come out as a slightly overtonish kind of sound. Awesome job man. It's players like you that make me proud to play the sax.
Tina, I am working on my new CD right now! The CD features industry greats Jonathan DuBose Jr. and Paul Jackson Jr on guitar, Jeremy Thomas and Carlton"C-Dub" Whitfield on organ and Grammy award winning vocalist, Lalah Hathaway!!! It will be out in March!
@christiansaxplyr Wow dude you truly inspired me now. I play through the public school system atm and have no way of getting private lessons, although i play on my sax at home like every other day when i can. Hopefully i can get as good as you though someday
hey i am not a doctor MD are just my initials...i am also a young (17 yrs old)Christian sax player and i just wanted to know what i need to perfect my sound...and also you just happened to be playing my favorite gospel song in this video...so thank you very much and God bless you
Not that I can compare to any of them but: David Sanborn, Gerald Albright, Grover Washington, Walter Beasley, Nelson Rangell, and Donald Hayes. Non sax influences are: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Maynard Ferguson, and Phil Driscoll. I love any player that plays with intensity and passion!!! Thanks for listening. Jermaine
My Brother, I would like to go to USA to see you playing for our God. Please tell me your schedule for 2014. I and my son are learning saxophone and we will see you playing. From Brazil Everton da Rosa and Tiago da Rosa
Thanks doc!!! In this video I'm playin my Yamaha Black Custom Z with a Belmonte #7 mouthpiece and a 2.5 plastic cover reed. I currently play the same set up except I use a Beechler #7 Custom Bellite mouthpiece. I hope to put some new videos soon with the new set up, so check back with me!
@provinceofcyrodiil - No I learned through the public school system. I played with my fathers albums: David Sanborn, Hank Crawford, Grover Washington, Wilton Felder and later Gerald Albright (too many to name). I tried to imitate their sound and style. I also learned from playing in church. I started playing in church a year after I started playing. It was a very loud COGIC church so they couldn't hear how bad I sounded back then!!! LOL!
@elderclgi In this video I'm playing my Yamaha Custom 82Z Black, but if you go through my videos, I play on all kinds of different set ups (different horns, reeds, mouthpieces, ligatures etc) and oddly enough they all sound the same!!! Thanks for your comments!
Nothin complicated, just descending pentatonics in sequential patterns: A,G,F,D; G,F,D,C; F,D,C,A... etc The move at 6:02 specically was ascending arpeggios low F,A,C continuing to F,A,C in the next octave (continuously repeated). Hope this helps you out! Thanks for stoppin through! Jermaine
I do some playing myself...You have an amazing sound..I also am curious to what kind of mouthpiece you use. and with any tips you would like to share with me.
Thanks for leaving acomment doc!!! Believe or not I'm playing a super C and I slide up to a super D just for a moment. So if you are playing Eb you're actually playing higher than me. Jermaine
Glory be man! I used to think I played the Sax! Would love to see you live sometime Bro. I play out at James River Assembly in Springfield, MO, though horns are background there (no problem, just a cog in the giant wheel of Worship!) I tavel in OK a lot... where's your home base? Do well and keep lifting Him up!
First of all you sound great. I also play sax and still trying to get a sound and altissimo like yours. If you don't mind me asking what did you practice to get your sound the way it is now?
@christiansaxplyr whats ur set up for the sax mp reed and what level sax do u have is it pro intermediate ect. what do u recommend for someone looking for there second sax after ive played the student level one
Quick question my brother in Christ. What kind of pattern or scale were you playing at 6:02 it was so beautiful. Pls let me know. God has and will continue bless you.
bigiguest, there's obviously many ways to achieve these high notes, but the quickest way is to use the very top key on your sax (the key above the "B" key) the rest is achieved with your lip and ear. Play the note down an octave first, make sure you hear it in your head, then using the top key and lipping up you should get the note you are looking for. A high "G" up to a super "D" can be achieved using that top key.
Hello Brother. I´m a christ from germany and i´m playing too sax. Not as well as you play it but i try to give my best. I played three times in the states. I have a question, did exict a better video where you play with phil driscoll. Funny thing. I just started playing gospel music at a church last sunday. I have the same horn you do (875EXB?). I just got a wireless clip-on mic for my birthday. Hopefully I'll be able to speak like you. Just thought you should know we have alot in common. You sounded realllly nice. (what kind of mouth-piece are you using?) I'm using a Claude Lakey on mine
