my school (for reference, orchestra has to get up earlier than everyone else): first violins: actually really good at what they do second violins: are usually struggling and kind of in the background, but generally good people who need to practice more violins in general: tend to be theater kids as well violas (my instrument): ok, i guess? only 3/5ths of the section can play well, 4/5ths if our other good violist shows up, also most of us are gay and those who aren't are either track/cross country kids or the Fine Arts Student of the Year cellos: one's graduating, the other is one of the best cellists in the state bass: quiet but dependable; most likely to start a band in college-- our last one just graduated and she started as a violinist, transitioned to guitar, and picked up bass in there as well piano: seriously overworked and constantly losing her music, but finally setting boundaries and letting the innocent freshman who's coming next year take over some of her stuff

One time in my middle school orchestra, the conductor (who was also our orchestra teacher) joined the first violins for some reason and when I listened to it back, you literally couldn’t hear basically any other part for most of the song. It just made me so mad because I tried so hard to actually play my dynamics and the first violins just walked all over us with their privilege. (I’m a viola btw)
AAAAAH THE SPONGES! in our schools you have 3 options: 1: deal with the sponge 2: buy your own shoulder rest 3: practice a lot and be good enough to earn one of the like 7 shoulder rests 😂 i was always 3 but i did 2 cause half of them are broken

J It’s a bandwagon thing. A long time ago, violas were like mini cellos that you stood on your thighs and played from there. They started to transition to being played on the shoulder but because they were still so big, violists looked very weird playing them. And it stuck. My viola section is very good, but we still get entirely ignored and laughed at all the time, even by the conductors. People just see others doing it and join in

Alivia Taylor oh my god, yes! First violin in the beginning year is rough, but the violas never beat them when I was in the beginning class. (I’m a violin) But since you’re a bass player, you’ll be fine if you practice. Bass is an amazing instrument and you’ll still do better than the cellos 🤣
