Thanks for sharing this example of using seawater. Great idea for islands surrounded by ocean with little to no fresh water, money, technology and resources.
Even if you dont have a huge sheet of plastic, you can use Reynolds wrap, ziploc bags, plastic bag like shopping bags, or plastic bottles, cut the bottom off and poke hole in cap, wrap coffee filter or fabric around the cap side, then fill sand, gravel, then bigger pebbles after an that's a filter, theres always a way to do it, you can use a bucket as well, doesnt have to be a hole in ground, just gotta use whatever is around you at the time best you can an substitute things best your ability.
If those leaves aren't poisonous, you can even overlap them like shingles toward the collection point (which, itself, could be leaves &/or carved-out wood &/or a conveniently shaped rock Etc.).
Another way to get water: wrap a sealed plastic bag around a living, leafy branch, and leave it for several hours. The leaves photosynthesizing give off a small amount of water that will collect as droplets, and you can shake the bag to get the water to one corner to drink. Obviously, it is only about a Dixie cups worth, but if you can find a bunch of littered bags, it takes little energy to set up many. I have tried this in our backyard, but am no expert and don’t know if water from every plant is safe to drink.
Nice video. It would be helpful to line the bottom of your hole with plastic before you add the plants and seawater/urine. It doesn't have to be clear plastic at the bottom of your still but clear is needed at the top.
the resin from a conifer tree or you can perform pyrolysis on wood and then condense the overhead gas products into oil and then build a refinery to manufacture the plastic. but without a freshwater source you would be dead before you achieved those things.
That took 24 hrs to get. Humans need almost 2L of water per day. 250 ml gives you an eighth what you need. Sitting in the shade and not doing much will decrease how much you need, but if you're going to use a still like that, you should really set up more than one.
I like the tip about placing a tube into the cup to drink from. You had a lot of plastic had the pit been larger in diameter and a bit deeper it would have increased your production too
I could be wrong, but wouldn't it have been better to place the whole bucket of salt water inside the still, off to one side? By tipping it in, a lot of the water would have just soaked away.
I barely learned of this method for acquiring water but what you mentioned does make a whole lot of sense. I think it would be ideal to use some of the transparent plastic sheet as a cover for the basin to retain water. that way the hole can keep it's parabolic shape in order to efficiently expose as much of the water to the sun's rays.
I may be wrong too lol. But tipping the water all over the leaves surrounds the leaves in water that is saltier (has a higher solute concentration) than the water inside in leaves. Therefore, the fresh water in the leaves diffuses out of the leaves by osmosis, down a concentration gradient, so you harvest more water from the leaves than you would if the leaves were not surrounded by salt water. Therefore, more fresh water evaporates and drips into the bucket.
@@jenniferandoh5342 Actually this is pretty smart when you think of it in cooking terms. Throwing a bunch of salt on vegetables draws the moisture out of them like crazy. Can't see why it wouldn't work with leafy plants.
If you lay a piece of plastic flat on the ground condensation would build immediately then place the plastic where it will drain to the center and then squeegee it to that location. Yes you need a squeegee. Might be able to shake it to the center.
You don't have to dig a hole if you already got a bucket. Just place the vegatation in the bucket, the cup in the center and cut out a small sheet of plastic and place it on top of the bucket. Same concept, way less work.
The same concept but the hole in the ground is going to creat a cooler surrounding, therefore aiding the process. Would still be worth creating a way for the bigger bucket to be cool.
A couple of dozen of those should keep one person alive in hot weather. You only need a litre of water every couple of hours. Just remember to carry a decent shovel, a case of drinking cups, a couple of coils of flexible tubing and a big roll of plastic sheeting with the rest of your kit if you're planning on trekking......
Great info! I would rather not have had to struggle to hear it above the guitar. What you're saying is important, and every time you made a point, the noise got louder.
Sorry this might sound stupid was the dirt covering the top of the cup. It seems like the hole of in the plastic was under the small pile of dirt in n the middle. Or was it slightly moved over.
oi m8 i swaer on mi mum's grave that this really works m8. Saw this method like 15 years ago m8 and its surprisingly easy to do m8. Im subscribing to this channel m8
What does the green leaves add? Im confused about why he added that. If he poured sea water in there and left it to bake in the sun, it would form condensation anyway, so why green leaves?
+blitz krieg really? you would actually drink your own straight pee, before filtering it this way? some people recommend, a sheet at the bottom as well, to prevent the urine from soaking into the ground, also i don't think the leaves are necessary, because they will just absorb the urine. I think, dig a hole, plastic sheet down, pee in the hole, set cup in, cover with plastic. this would probably recover with i would say an 80% efficiency. Then you wouldn't be wasting your pee.
The more dehydrated you get the worse urine is to drink. After a day without water it will be too concentrated and drinking it will only make you more dehydrated.
yes you can, it is a still so, only water gets evaporated, the chemicals in the urine are left behind in the grass, leaves or ground you use in the still. So you end up with pure distilled water
Helpful, but only thing is Im not going to have a giant bucket or salt water. Going on a survival trip in a month in the Desert in Arizona and only allowed one bottle of water, a medium piece of rope, a small hard candy.
If you don't have a bucket of water, you can use your own urine to coat the vegetation and obviously not directly into the collection cup you're going to drink.
Boy, I sure hope I find some nice green vegetation, a shovel and a bucket half full of water and some good plastic tarps when I'm in a do or die emergency situation. So glad I watched this. Now I know what to look for...
Doesn't matter. You're creating the humidity inside the still. That's the whole idea of evaporation. The external humidity doesn't affect the process at all.

The point is that you can desalinate the water to make it suitable for drinking. If you already have fresh water, there would be no point to going through this exercise. Cheers, Team All4Adventure

It’s hard to watch you dig in flip flops. Here you have to hit the ground with a pickaxe several times to make a marble sized hole. You make it look so easy.
Just a thought why didn’t you just drink the 2 1/2 gallons of water you dumped into the hole with the leaves 🍃 just to get a cup full of water 💦 back out you dumped what 20 cups full of water into a hole to get 1 cup full back. I’ve seen these things to distill dirty water which could be a good thing to get your water clean but you were talking about getting water from the air not cleaning water you already had 🤷♂️

Why??!
Because the soil will absorb a lot of the water otherwise. Ideally you have a pool of water at the bottom.@@Notyourgrandad1900s
I did this on a small scale and it worked great. good video thanks for sharing.

someone has to die.. plenty of material to make short straws
you can always dig other hols simultaneously !
You don't need two liters a day. Maybe two liters a week minimum?

Your video is so underrated! Thanks for this
I learned how to make that in Boy Scouts in the 70's.
Boy Scouts came in handy later in life.

This is great for people near beaches with sea water, I bet there are more methods that you would need less things
cant beat a bit of bushcraft. thanks pal.
I'm more concerned with that tarp... What if you dont have a conveniently large bit of plastic sheet??!!??

Wake Up early in the morning and drink condensation of water.
