Great work Mr. Ernst Toch (who wrote the Hallelujah-Choral)!

One of his very best! Thanks so much for posting and instructing us on this, one of the finest composers! I've read little, but it would seem that the talent just runs like a river through this musical dynasty! One of my personal favorites, the "rescue" scene of Maureen O'Hara by Charles Laughton! Had he written nothing else, that alone would have made him a king of composers!

They often called Newman a "hack" in comparison to Korngold,Herrman, Waxman, Rosza-However Newman rose to the occasion with his classic score for this film. Newman's music compliments Laughton's performance and his splendid supporting cast, William Dieterle's epic yet humane and compassionate directing, Joseph August's fantastic camera work not to mention Van Nest Polgase's medieval sets The film gives us as convincing a portrait of the filth, superstition and brutality of that time period A+++

The vibrato is destroying the choral music and especially here. The beautiful harmonies are destroyed by people who cannot intonate properly, but the worst part is that the entire classical tradition approves of these blurred harmonies.
