How to Create a Low Polygon Portrait in Photoshop

- In this fun tutorial I will show you how to create a low poly portrait effect in Photoshop.
I like to call this a Paper mask effect, or Origami effect.
The basic thing is to cover your model with a bunch of triangles, not squares or any other polygon shapes, but triangles.
Smaller triangles are, higher resolution of a model you will get, and opposite.
It is really fun and easy process.
You can apply this effect on anything that you like!
I will not provide a tutorial files, because you can work on your own files.

Question: I'm not a very good photographer. I understand what you say when we shoot our own photos, that the camera settings should be similar when shooting subject and background separately. I just got into photoshop and ive been teaching myself alot of stuff but for some reason blur average isnt there for me anyone else have the same problem or know a fix? i reset my preferences but still nothing any help would be great...still a great video man i actually learned a lot from it
Thanks. Unfortunately I don't know what is wrong with your average blur option. Maybe you are using an older version of Photoshop. Try to Google it

To merge everything just use a keyboard shortcut shift +ctrl +alt +E

This used to work well for me, but in my actions, it looks like the selection is now set to the exact spot we originally made when recording, so whenever I try to select a new triangle and press F2, it fills the original space again, not the new selection. Is there a way to fix this?

Is there anyway to alter the colors after?
Yes you can.
I guess it won't work with the PS 2020 Version anymore. If I set the selection, let the average filter go and set it on a new layer, the average patch rests on the new layer AND the original layer... That's crap. Or am I doing something wrong?
It works exactly the same in Photoshop 2020
You are missing some step. Watch the tutorial one more time carefully.
I want to ask u a question about the ctrl j triangle to create a new layer

A little disappointed in my result...it looks alright from far away, but up close you can see the pixels. Wouldn't it be better to do this as vector in Illustrator?
Try to use a good quality image.
You can do this in illustrator too. And then you can make it as big as you want 👌🏻
He Nemanja, thanks for the tutorial. Super cool. One question: I keep getting lines between my triangles even while snapping to the grid. Is there a setting to fix this?
There are many reasons why this is happening. Make sure that ju copy a new triangle with ctrl+J, not to cut it (shift+ctrl+J)
If that is not the case, you can send me a screenshot to my email.
I tried again with a bigger image and made sure to aim for existing triangle intersections. Seems to have addressed the issue. Thanks again for a fun tutorial :)

Thanks for the tutorial! Quick question, I think I used a lower res photo, when I hide the background layer I see white lines between all my polys, even though I snapped to the grid...any suggestions? Thanks again
Yes, you need to use high res photos. It will be much better result.

I have a question, how could I make the lion's eyes become more special, you know, like you see those eyes in the dark or just change the color of them to set it off compare with the general of picture, sorry for my bad english if you dont understand what I mean. :D :D

If you want eyes to be more spherical, just create a smaller triangles around the eyes.

Have a problem with cut the selection to new layer
Everytime when I do this you can see a small border between the different triangles or the triangle and the background

You're probably using low res file. Is that the case?

You can. Also you can do it in Illustrator.

You need to make a new selection all the time. Please watch it a little bit more carefully.

Decided to give this a go and when i am creating the triangles, instead of it being a true triangle, like in the vid photoshop creates a blocky version of a triangle. how can i fix this issue?

What I am trying to say is, in your tutorial the triangles appeared to be smoother. in mine the triangles are more 'boxy' do i need to make my base image larger to allow more pixels in the image?
Yes, the larger image is better.

Every time I do Filter > Blur > Average, it fills it in with gray. How do I fix it? :)
Did you set a selection first?
Yes, every time I make a triangle it turns it into a color (in this case its gray) thats different from the photo which was red (not gray).
That is very strange. Can you send me a photoshop screenshot with all layers in that moment when you have a problem?

I didn't provide a stock images because you can literally use any image you want to create this effect.

Alex Cisneros I'm sorry if you feal disappointed. I have few more tutorials without stock images. For the same reason. It is really not so hard to go and grab one image online and work on it.

Alex Cisneros. It may help you develop your technique a little quicker if you use your own images as you know them much better.

This doesn't work. When I average the blur it blurs the original image and keeps the blur on it, when I ctrl J it just makes another layer of the blur but still the original image has the blur on it.
That's because you didn't make a selection before it. Watch it again more carefully
Nope, it just doesn't work. The first part of your video were you averaged out a selection then did CTRL + J it averaged the selected polygon area but it kept it on the original and just gave me two polygons, one on the original image and one on the duplicated layer. Please help.
Yes it will keep it to the original layer but then you Ctrl+J to copy it to a new layer.

Try to manually adjust it... You need to practice it several times.

You're using an older version of Photoshop. Don't worry. Just sample a color from taht region and fill it with that color. And so on...
