    I found a pair of 5 inch Powered Mackie speakers, now I’ll have two focusrite amps, a Scarlett 2018 and the focus rite so I’ll have two independent recording setups. I’ll use one for my Korg 16 track and the other for my Mac. I like having the Korg for ease of recording and the garage band for fine adjustments mixing down. It’s taken 15 years for me to finally have the setup I like for recording guitar instrumentals. I really appreciate your video do help me to have a video roadmap. Thank you.

    I have a similar board. Happy to see this ..so once you do you're mix on the board add compressor,effects etc. How will I return the signal back to the DAW..and maintain those effects coz that's all I want. EQ on the board return it and export. No time for too much plugins . Thank you.

      You basically just record back the Main Mix output. Create a stereo track in the DAW and set the input wherever the Main Mix is coming into the converters.

    Hi and appreciate your time with demonstrating your hybrid setup.
    I also have a similar hybrid setup.
    My question if you could advise is I am feeding my line in’s from my interfaces and wonder if I would do better coming into my tape returns?
    I’m recording directly into my audio interface.
    I’m trying to see what benefit I would have over either.
    Of course via the tape returns you have no gain control, but wonder really if that is something that is not required, less of a job gain staging signals into console.
    Appreciate your view on the subject and thank you kindly
    John.

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I would recommend using the Tape Returns, as they are intended to use for mixing. You also don't introduce another preamp/gain stage and probably have less noise overall then. I always used the Tape Returns with that console and used volume/gain trim in the DAW to feed the mixer with an appropriate signal.

    I have one of those boards in storage. Was getting out the old equipment to equip my studio and am planning on selling it, but seeing your rig makes me want to get it out and see how it'd do with my current setup. Great walk through! I came here because I've got the MX8000. I bought it a year ago. My first real mixer. Began with electronic music in 1990, soon got a synth and another. Not many, summed them together with simple mixers without eq, aux etc. Now I've got 2 x M-Audio Delta 1010LT and obviously need quite a few cables more :D Getting there slowly, to the point where I should have been in the 90's already. I have (reluctantly) tested the aux send with analog distortion pedal and I was surprised: very quiet, very usable! Pre-fader send for 100% wet sound. Today you may get these desks like at 200 eur. Why to get one? For me it was the gear with analog outputs. And it is a cheap course into studio mixing :) My MX8000 had crackling / non-connecting switches. Luckily you can drop contact agent in at the shaft, after lifting the switch caps off. The pots luckily aren't that bad. They can't be "oiled" from the top side. Opening the mixer would be just too much work.

    +Jake Gooder can't reply directly to your comment, missing reply button... Anyhow, yes it should work with the SX3242FX. It has no Tape Returns so you will have to use the Line Inputs and adjust the level with the gain knob. You will need an Audiointerface with lots of Analog In- and Outputs. For example I use the Presonus Firestudio Project which is daisy-chainable, which means you can connect up to 4 units giving you a maximum of 32 channels. Basically, what you want is a audio interface that has at least the same amount of analog outputs as your mixing console.

    • @noahmusicnz
      @noahmusicnz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The mixer has no connection to the DAW. In this setup, the DAW is first and foremost acting as a tape machine to record and play back sounds, which get sent out of the converters and through the mixer to be eq'ed and compressed etc. Of course plugins can still be added in the DAW to change what gets sent to the mixer. The faders on the mixer have no connection to the faders in the DAW though.

    Hi, how are you? I just bought a 24 channel Sirit live 4 soundcraft. I have a presonus digimax LT and a presonus audiobox 1818 vsl. I have them connected with an adat cable, that way I can record 16 tracks simultaneously. The Audiobox has a main out L / R and the LT has 8 insert points in the back. I have connected the main outs of the Audiobox to one of the stereo channels of the mixer and the main L / R output to my HS7 Yamahas. I would like to know how you connect the monitors since when I put play on my daw reproduces everything and not what I'm routing to my mixer. If you have time to explain, I would thank you very much. Greetings from Argentina.

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey! So you want to mix with the Soundcraft or just use it as a input device? As far as I know the Main Outs on the Audiobox share the same output as 1-2. So whatever you send out of 1-2 on the Audiobox is the same as the Main Out L/R. For mixing I would suggest to connect all the Outputs of the interface (except Main Out L/R) to the Inputs of the Soundcraft and also connect the Yamaha Monitors to the Mix Outputs of the Soundcraft.
      For the Mixdown track connect 2 cables from the Rec Out /or Matrix Out back to 2 Inputs of the Audiobox and create a Stereo track with the corresponding inputs.

    Mic > Input on mixer channel > dir out of mixer > trs patch bay > out of patch bay into input of audio interface.
    I am assuming your set up is:
    Audio interface out > patch bay > input of mixer > stereo master of mixing desk (mixbus) > input of audio interface.
    I am wondering if using trs from the patch bay into the inputs of the desk are ok ?
    also would i connect outboard/500 series to the patch bay or use them as x/y cable inserts ?

      It's an analog mixer, so no digital connections. Every channel gets its input from the digital to analog converter. You basically route your DAW tracks through the converter into the mixer and print back a stereo track once you're happy with the mix.

      Have a look at the new Presonus Quantum 4848 - 32 Analog in/out via DB25 connectors. Otherwise the Motu 24 I/O seems also to be decent but it has no inputs. So you need a second interface for that.

  • @380stroker
    @380stroker 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm trying to figure this out. So what interface do I need to have 8 outputs going into the Line Inputs of the analog mixer? I currently have a Presonus Studio 192 Mobile. How do I set this up or do I need a different interace? If so, which one? I'd like to deal with an interface that has USB. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you only need 8 Outputs you can expand your Presonus 192 Mobile with the Presonus DigiMax DP88 via ADAT. It will give you 8 more Analog Outputs with a DB25 cable. So in sum you'll get 12 Outputs. If you don't plan to record with a higher sample rate than 48kHz you can also hook up two of those DigiMax to the ADAT Outputs of the Mobile 192 giving you 16 Analog Outputs- in sum 20.

    • @380stroker
      @380stroker 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, so on the DigiMax DB25 outputs...would that be the DB25 Direct outputs that are pre AD Converters or would it be the DB25 DAC outputs. I'm confused about it's direct outputs vs it's DAC outputs. It has both.

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +380stroker DB25 direct outputs. The eight balanced DAC outputs expand your interface outputs for monitor mixes or speaker switching. It should be described in the manual you can download on the presonus website.

      Hi! It's basically a matter of personal preference and workflow. I like having real faders and EQs right at my fingertips. You also get a little saturation when you overdrive a channel slightly, which can be a nice effect. With a mixer, it's also quite simple to use outboard equipment like compressors, EQs and FX units on the inserts and AUX channels.
      However, mixing in the DAW is no problem and I sometimes also do that- depends on the project and how much time is available.

    where do you get your headphone and monitor output from?
    can I get it from the second firestudio headphone output along with monitor output as though using one unit?

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Danny Vee when you chain 2 firestudios, it becomes one large audio interface. So the outputs of the second unit are 9-16. I monitor from the 2-Track of the console which is connected to output 23-24 of the third Firestudio in the chain. If you mix only ITB, you can use output 1-2 of the first unit for monitoring as well as the headphone output.

    I have a few question I'm hoping that you can help me with. But first I want to explain what I'm trying to do. I want to accomplish this "hybrid" mixing setup for live streaming at my church. We currently have a Mackie VLZ3-2404 and I want to split the channels either via XLR Y-Adapters, or a snake splitter or using the "first click method" on the line inputs, whatever the budget may allow to go into another mixer which will be for the live stream. I understand the concept of this hybrid setup only to an extent. So my question is, with mics, keyboard/s and other instruments and so forth, I will need more than one AD/DA converters right so that every source can be captured and converted to digital signal right? And if this is correct then how do I get all of that sound into the computer so I can control it with a DAW such as Reaper. 1st mixer>2nd mixer>AD/DA Converters> then I'm lost.
    I'm welcoming help from all that can help along with the gentleman that made this video.

      I get 24 analog outputs, 1-2 on the other interfaces is working as individual outputs - no copy of the main mix. It‘s only on the first one in the chain that way. But I can still use output 1-2 of the first interface because I have my monitors connected to the analog console and so I feed output 1-2 into channel 1-2 of the console. The main mix of interface one actually goes nowhere, nothing connected. Same on the other units.

    nice setup mate! :-) but i still dont get it. i wanna get my 8 stereo tracks (including 2 bus tracks) via interface into an old mackie style mixer (that needs 16 direct outs) and wann put that back in to ableton, but im still not understanding the whole stereo process right. so do i have to make each simple ableton stereo track into two monos ( left and right ), bus this as one track, and than start sending it to my interface, that sends it to the mixer, which also uses two mixer tracks for one ableton track ( which is now a double mono left right bus) ? thanx for ur help

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would do the following: Leave the stereo tracks in Ableton as normal stereo tracks but set their outputs to 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, ....., 15-16. Connect the 16 interface outputs to the line inputs of the mixer and pan the channels hard left and right. That way you can use 2 mono channels as one stereo channel.
      Connect the 2 Bus of the mixer back to 2 inputs of the audio interface and create a stereo track in Ableton with those 2 inputs. If the Mackie has a 2-Track return you can send the 2 Bus track back into the mixer for monitoring. Just use another 2 outputs of the interface for that.
      Perform your mix and once you‘re happy with the settings print the mix back onto the 2 Bus track in Ableton.

I have recently purchased an Allen Heath gl22000 32 channel mixer so am looking to buy a few of the same Presonus Firestudio Projects to use as my A/D converters to record into my DAW. What I was wondering is how you gain stage the A/D converters since the Presonus interfaces have a gain control knob, are they all set equally and if so where abouts are they set to ensure they don't add extra gain to the line levels?! Also I noticed in the vid you said you have them set to 88.2 KH, do they have an option to change this on the interfaces? Many thanks for all the help!! :)

      Thank you!! The Firestudios have unity line level gain (0dB) when the knobs are in the 12 o‘clock position. Input 1-2 are Mic/Instruments inputs, so those are a little different!

    Great clip. You've just confirmed for me that its possible to daisy chain 3 presonus firestudio projects! Is it usb or firewire connected. .. and if you wanted to expand more could you have an additional 4th firestudio project? Do you have any latency issues when all 3 are in simultaneous operation? I also understand why you prefer your template set up assigning to your analog trax that already have your rack gear inserted but have you considered a patch bay?..whatever suits us I guess.... I am considering options before spending money and have narrowed down to either the focusrite 18i20/ octopres mk2/sapphires or the presonus firestudio projects...and its great to know the chain possibility with it...you cannot chain 3 18i20's ive learned it has to run in conjunction with other focusrite octopres etc like its apparently impossible without the other! which means a hassle in purchasing different types to achieve what you've just shown on this clip with simply 3 firestudios chained. Cheers. So presonus is looking like a leading candidate for my home set up.

That way, they are rock-solid through the whole session!
      As far as I know you can daisy chain up to 4 firestudio devices, which will give you a maximum of 32 analog In/Out. They are connected with firewire only, no usb ports on the units! Sample rate is 88,2 kHz at the moment. (Some people say they only work with 44 or 48 kHz when in daisy chain - NOT TRUE)
      Yeah, thought about a patchbay, but as I don't have outboard gear on the channels inserted I really don't need one at the moment. I'm pretty happy with my subgroup setup, everything else gets processed with plugins.

      LBmusicexperience cheers.. ive seen the firestudio features and on the back are just 2 firewire ports! (Correct me if im wrong).. So I imagine you interconnect the 3 with firewire cable out 1 in 2 out 2 to in 3 then out 3 into your computer firewire port? Ive mixed in the box for past few years and am drawing near to analog mixing hence my curiosity into the multi channels interfaces digital to analog converting and gathering as much 'know how to' information as possible thanks again Your clips are very helpful.

      edgeboys Correct, 2 firewire ports on the back of each unit. Port 1 is always the "Receiver" and Port 2 is the "Sender" to the next unit. Computer-> Firestudio Nr.1-> Firestudio Nr.2-> Firestudio Nr.3

    Hello!
    Great channel... I'd like to ask you a suggestion: I have an Allen Heath gl2200 mixer and it has no tape returns, just: line in input, mic input, direct out and insert. Due to the fact that I need the line in input as return from the Daw, do you think is okay to use the insert for external preamp (to bypass the mixer preamp) or is better to use the mic input even if then there will be 2 "preamping" stages?
    Thanks and regards!

      +Sub Noctem Hm, in that case I would actually go straight from the mic pre into the interface.

      Ah, too bad... I really wanted to use the console. Thanks for the answer!

      +Sub Noctem you can but you will have to unplug the daw return every time you want to connect the pre.

      Got it. Just to know, can you tell me why it would be bad to route the preamps through the inserts? The inserts would bypass the mixer's preamps

      +Sub Noctem inserts are designed for send and return devices, like compressors, EQs or FX. To use an insert as in input, you will need a TS cable on the preamp, and a TRS on the insert end, with the ring used for the signal, and the tip connected to the sleeve (grounded) or not connected.

    Do the Main Outs lead to the speakers/monitors?

      No, there are dedicated monitor outputs for the speakers.

    beautiful studio and what a nice setup, simple and powerfull!!!! I see that you are not using any tipe of adat for the conexions, all are jacks.. so simple... do you can make it with 3 adat in and out for 24 channels?

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Toni Palou Thanks! Yes, should be possible. As far as I know one ADAT can handle 8 channels with 44,1kHz sample rate.

      Sure, depending on your model you might need a adapter for your audio interface (Thunderbolt, Firewire,..)

      +BlackRaven_RecordingStudio thanks! I don't have any problems with the stereo image. Do you pan hard left and right on the console for stereo tracks?

    • @Donato2082
      @Donato2082 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      LoudBox Music hi man, Yes but when I return back I get almost a mono track... I think that is because the converter of my pro40 are bad...

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BlackRaven_RecordingStudio oh ok, so when you listen from the console everything is normal but once you print it back into the computer it collapses to mono? Yeah seems like a problem with the converter.

      Maybe with an external hardware as a tape machine or some other I could fix my problem! Thanks for your time! :)
