That kinda does look like a bird... anybody who's stupid enough to fly a drone near an airport needs to see this before he gets locked up.

Flying planes from the 1980s on the public dime is NOT needed and unnecessary. This is death was quite sad but was preventable at all costs had they not decided to waste tax payers money to put on an air show on the public dime. Thankfully the house the plane crashed into didn't kill anyone else, or else that would have been innocent lives taken. The potential was there though to kill many innocent lives because of this nonsense! If you want and like air shows, let it be supported by private enterprises, out in fields where they can't crash into homes and affect /disrupt people's live. What a bunch of nonsense. Maybe they'll learn now.

So sad to hear about this accident. Many years ago I flew with the team on a media flight when they preformed at the Stockton (CA) Airshow. It was the thrill of my life. I was in the #2 aircraft as we took off from Stockton and flew in formation over San Francisco. It was incredible. Being in the jet and seeing just how close and precise they flew. I was amazed as the pilot, I believe his name was Grant, never seemed to look ahead to where we were going, but instead concentrated and watched only the wingtip of the #1 jet. Their professionalism and esprit de corps was fantastic. I send out my heartfelt condolences to the pilots and crew and families affected.

He sadly passed before his time in 1993. I always think of him when I see a CAF aircraft in the sky. My condolences to the CAF and Snowbirds on this loss.

We met some of the pilots and crew at the Arnold Palmer Airport, Latrobe, PA air show 2019, I believe. Regular folks. Great people. Friendly. Very humble. Great flying. After the wonderful show they asked if there was an IHOP, of all places. No fancy dan restaurant. They followed us in their van, and we had a nice conversation there, with them in their flight clothes, about 10 men and women. God bless them.

I was able to watch the Snowbirds, Red Arrows, and Thunderbirds perform before DIA opened. The Snowbirds were pure grace and beauty, they put on a truly beautiful show. Majesty and magic in the air. Then the Thunderbirds fly, OMG, felt like NFL Monday Night. everything max performance. Max G turns, .96 mach. It was a boxing match in the sky. The sneaker fly by had to have been nibbling a mach as it was quiet, then a ripping bang and full afterburner. The Snowbirds are incredible as they dance among the clouds.
    'High Flight'
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high unsurpassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
    Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee
May God Bless Their Hearts and Souls.

Todd Dembsky, thank you for your comment and this beautiful poetry ... my eyeballs were overdue for a rinse ! :-( Peggy Noonan borrowed the first and last lines, (They "slipped the surly bonds of earth ... and touched the face of God") for Ronald Reagan to commemorate the astronauts on the space shuttle Challenger. All the more appropriate on this solemn occasion, since John Magee (though born to an American father and British mother) was flying for the Canadian Royal Air force, in England, both when he soared to 33,000 feet (the presumed inspiration for his poem) and when his young life ended. Per Wikipedia : John Gillespie Magee Jr. (9 June 1922 - 11 December 1941) was a World War II Anglo-American Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot and poet, who wrote the poem High Flight. He was killed in an accidental mid-air collision over England in 1941. "

I flew Tutors some 40 years ago and had a compressor stall at about the same place on takeoff but from a very small bird ingestion. I was with my instructor who immediately took control as we zoomed with the idle air-start depressed. Fortunately for us we got a partial re-light of the engine but could only get 75% power back. It was enough to get around the corner, execute a tight low level pattern and land. It was a close call and watching this made the anxious memory re-emerge with chilling detail. RIP Jenn Casey and God bless the pilot Richard MacDougall I hope he fully recovers.

As a former T-114 tutor engine technician , with 5+ years of flightline experience on the Tutor, I and other retired technicians agree it appears that the engine did compressor stall, the loud pop is indicative of the engine compressor stalling, the aircraft usually would compressor stall on run up to max rpm when the inlet guide vanes of the engine were misaligned or when there was minor unnoticed FOD damage that may be difficult to see. Also compressor stalls are more prevalent at higher altitude run ups or at higher summer temperatures

Thanks for this heartfelt posting, Juan. I've flown in and out of Kamloops many times as a passenger on DASH-8s and it is a somewhat challenging mountain airport nestled in a river valley in the Rockies. You wouldn't have a lot of options available with engine loss. That departure took them directly over the Thompson River which is only a couple hundred feet at most from where the person making the video was standing. I suspect the turn to the left was to try to edge away from 'downtown' Kamloops. The aircraft impacted a few hundred feet in from the river. Deepest sympathies for the family and friends of Captain Jennifer Casey and best wishes for a speedy recovery for the pilot.

On this Cross-Canada trip, I had the privilege to see them fly in tight formation directly overhead a few hundred feet off the deck, on 3 passes as they flew over my town. Truly an incredible sight.

Our air force designation for the Tutor is CT-114 by the way, and only the Snowbirds fly them, at least until they run out of spares. Always a pretty show from them, I hope they continue after investigation. My condolences.

Big loss for Canada, many were following their cross country tour to lift spirits during the pandemic. Can't help but think age of the aircraft will come up later, especially if a technical fault was to blame. Successive governments have delayed a replacement type, might lead to grounding the Snowbirds for a long time with no replacement aircraft likely.

I have had the pleasure of watching and meeting the Snowbirds for I guess about 60 years. At Republic Airport (FRG) back in the "day" we were able to get pretty up close and personal with the planes and the pilots. Those were really great days. Republic used to be a base of operations during airshow season. In 1986 for the Statue of Liberty celebration(if memory serves) they were host to the Snowbirds, Patroulle de France and the Thunderbirds. Met with members of all of them but I always found the Snowbird crews to be the most low key and humble of the lot. Of all the teams I have seen throughout the years. When they were in town, it was a banner year. Ever since I got the word yesterday, I was waiting for your for your report. Thank you Juan and my deepest regrets to the family and colleagues of Captain Jennifer Casey.

Great analysis also. I have ~2400 hrs on the jet and was a Team Coordinator (11 pilot - same position as this ejection) for three seasons. The checklist was modified after a misdiagnosed air conditioner soc problem caused a fatal ejection with a perfectly serviceable engine. The Zoom Idle Airstart described by johnpolitis was modified to Zoom (wings level) Airstart - Analyze. If loss of thrust confirmed then Idle airstart. (Prevented thrust reduction if there was usable thrust). Then, time permitting Procedure 1 (quicker) or Procedure 2 (longer) Relight procedure would be employed.

    • @ontheroad151

@Andy Cook Looks to me like the pilot was attempting a wingover type of manouver to rapidly turn around onto the diagonal rwy 22 or possibly back on to rwy27/09 or even the parallel taxiway. Personally, I think it was a reasonable decision given the excess energy he had to trade for altitude and overall situation (including calm wind/little to no tail wind on landing) and I think he would have pulled it off easily had he not spun out. Rwy 22 is short, but it is a runway. What do you think? The other option is, that he tried to zoom up while turning the plane away toward the mountain and away from the residential area and away from the river before ejecting. That seems very reasonable too.

Phil Sr in your expert opinion, what “better training” is needed? I am a civilian instructor, examiner and have 6500 hours of flying experience and I have no idea why this accident occurred. I have experienced an engine failure in flight myself and a lot happens in a very short time in which you need to make decisions and carry out actions that you have been trained to do. Humans will inevitably make some mistakes when carrying out emergency procedures, so until you’ve been in that situation I think you should keep your unfounded opinion to yourself!

God bless the Snowbirds! I have been watching them down here in the states since 1977. As you say, they are about the most impressive display team in the world, not just because they have 9 airplanes, but because their jets don't have the power-to-weight ratios that many other team's aircraft do. The Snowbirds have to be spot-on with their energy management, and their pilots need good stick and rudder skills. Oh, and did I mention that they are really nice people too.
The video you showed was far clearer than the cell phone video I had seen, but we both reached the same conclusion as to what likely happened. My heart goes out to the family of Capt. Casey. By all accounts, she was a great ambassador for Canada. Prayers also for the recovery of Capt. MacDougall.
I do hope that the US and Canada can do something to replace some of the old ejection seats that are out there. In the US, we still have aviators flying T-38As with the old Northrup seat, despite the fact that the training command airplanes have been upgraded to the "C" model, which has a zero-zero Martin Baker seat. If these brave folks are willing to defend our two countries with their lives, let's give them seats that will save their lives.

Saw them at Oshkosh a couple of years ago. EVERYONE knows the "Blue Angels" and "Thunderbirds". They fly fast, high perf frontline fighters but it's always neat to see the lesser known "Snowbirds" with their slower and (to me) more graceful performance. Years ago there was a team who flew Extra 300's called the "Northern Lights" which was comprised of many former "Snowbird" pilots. To this day, it remains my all time favorite form flight performance. IIRC they were last at Oshkosh around 2007 or so. I'm not sure if they're still together but I haven't seen them at Airventure in many years. RIP to the pilot and sending positive healing thoughts to the surviving member as well as all affected on the team, eyewitnesses(I've seen a number of accidents and it's not easy) and everyone on the ground.

Hey Juan - been following your channel for some time - I should have probably known you covered this at the time. I was there for this and reported on it (local radio reporter here). This was very sad and came during a very depressing stage of the pandemic. Shortly after this crash we faced a hellish wildfire season.
Right now the City of Kamloops is in the planning stages of a new park that will have a memorial for Captain Jennifer Casey, who we’d had on our air just a few days before the Snowbirds arrived in the city - it’ll be a lovely tribute.
In the end - investigators were even able to identify the species of bird that caused the flameout through DNA recovered from the wreckage believe it or not.
Memories of this day and what we all saw and did will be with me for the rest of my days I think.

The J85 is also used in one flavor of the Navy T-2 Buckeye (Nobody ever called it that, it was always the "Tadpole" when I heard it.) and was the engine in the early Lear jets.
I happen to have the CL-41 Pilot's Operating Handbook - the seats are supposed to be 0-60, so 0'/60 kts. Of course, this changes with stuff like aircraft attitude and descent rate. Nothing on how long it takes the seats to fire after the handle is pulled - it could be as long as 4-5 seconds.
For compressor stalls, the boldface is the usual, throttle to idle until the stall clears, then throttle back up. If it's a fuel control issue, rather than disturbed air, that may not work.
Airstart is also standard, throttle to Idle, mash the airstart button, and throttle up when it relights. There's a catch - The engine has to be windmilling at 12-34% RPM, which, according to the book, typically requires about 210 KIAS at sea level.
It looks like the stall hit at about the worst possible time - just after liftoff, not enough airspeed for a restart. A Motored start is possible, but it involves stopcocking the engine and a lot of switchology to reset - they wouldn't have had the time to try.
A sad day, I've seen the Showbirds fly several times, and they have always impressed me with their smoothness and precision.

    • @tazman5722

@@tazman5722 Thanks for that - it depends on the seat, and on the airplane, (Single seat, 2 or more, which often requires sequencing, etc) I didn't know how the Tutor's seats worked.
(Never punched out myself, and those who have that I've talked to, say that it seems like ages between pulling the handle, and the rockets firing - but then, of course, at that point, there might be blood in your Adrenaline System.)

When pilots are trained do they get into discussions where you should not even bother trying to relight the engine just eject? Would not be fair to arm chair quarterback as the pilots were in the situation and you know they made the best decision they could based on their training, experience, and information they had. Mr. Stickney - we are taught in GA that if we lose an engine/thrust after rotation (during take off climb), immediately nose over to maintain airspeed and buy a few seconds before it stalls. It does not appear this happened from the video...it appears the pilot continued a steep climb after the engine lost thrust, even dipped a wing before the spin occurred. I am a neophyte in comparison to this pilots' experience and credentials, but can you speculate on why she didn't nose over and try to establish a glide before ejection? Are pilots in this aircraft taught the same principles as in GA/piston powered aircraft? I'm not military and I'm not Canadian, but as a fellow pilot this kinda hurts today.
