WHY ARE SO MANY BUSINESSES SWITCHING TO THESE? [ISUZU CAB OVER]

  • Today we're hanging out with Jeremy Knecht of JJ Grounds sharing a quick tour with us about his Isuzu Cab Over trucks. These Isuzu's are becoming more and more popular, with tons of businesses switching to them for their mowing setup.
    Jeremy talks numbers for these trucks, and how they're extremely economical to run, and much easier than managing an additional trailer. I've seen more of these in the last few years than ever before, and I think they're going to become a staple in mowing fleets across the country.
    What do you guys think about the Isuzu Cab Over mowing rigs like Jeremy's setup? Do you think they make sense, or would you stick to a traditional truck and trailer setup? Let us know in the comments down below!

    The company that comes out to cut my small lawn has a crew cab Isuzu NRR box truck with a bobtail ramp fitted to it, their entire crew fits inside and anything not landscaping related is on a roof rack on top of the truck. It's a really cool setup to be honest.

  • @michelinman8592

    Most landscapers here in Michigan run 3/4 ton trucks and trailers as crew sizes are between 4-6 people. Yes, the Isuzu's have their uses, but I've only ever seen two set up for snow plowing. That and parts are fun to get a hold of for the diesels (the GM 6.0 gas isn't that hard.)

    The biggest issue I found for anything that's all-in-one is breakdowns. When the Isuzu breaks down how do you haul the equipment? If you have a truck and trailer setup, and your truck breaks down, you can rent a truck or use a back up truck to pull the trailer and keep moving.

    Nice vid Brian. I’m actually in the process of changing over to the cab over trucks. I will keep my trailer as a back up. The dealer that sells and repair trailers near me retired. It looks more professional, safer, and convenient. Being a small company I still prefer the crew cab vanscape style. The 22 and 23 models are close to 100 grand crew cab with box. I’m personally a fan of box trucks. Maneuverable, don’t need to know how to drive with a trailer, don’t need a large garage because you can just leave everything in the back of the truck. The down side is you can’t plow with them so you need separate pickups for that. Two out of three of our mowing crews run box trucks the third mowing crew runs a trailer.

    Hello from Australia! Interesting video to watch from this part of the world. Japanese cab overs are the vehicle of choice for most small/medium transport operations and many trades over here. Your "pick up truck" would not be considered a truck over here at all, although we pay a huge premium if we want one of your "1500" or "2500" "trucks". So no one would ever bother purchasing them as a work vehicle. Japanese commercial vehicles are tried and true here. Your "pick ups" are nothing but a glorified "ute" over here and used as a status symbol rather than a work vehicle. So it is interesting to see you lot catching up in a way! Next thing you lot need is to come out of the dark of the imperial system and embrace the light of the metric system.
    I hope that a few of you yanks read my comment and it ruffles your feathers. Cheers from Aus!

    While they are inexpensive trucks, and with the cab over pretty maneuverable,, I would not expect to get 10 years out of them, and you will find the parts and service is priced a little greedy. And they keep a pretty tight lock on their part numbers, Now I had a 2009 I bought new, with the GM 6.0 gas and automatic transmission, It went through 3 transmissions in 150,000 miles, I put about 20,000 a year and for that kind of mileage , a diesel just did not make financial sense . And be careful who you have working on them, you get some brake or suspension work done, the mechanic starts going to town with the sledge hammer,,,, expect to have an ABS light, and a $600. wheel speed sensor on the list of repairs. Just a word of caution,,,get a nice dependable 5 years out of it, and kick it loose, Before you find yourself " I just put a few thousand into it,,,, better get some more time out of it,,,,,,,,,, just put a few more thousand into it,,,,may as well get my money out of that........etc...etc

    I run a Isuzu NPR eco Diesel box truck setup, and a Isuzu Landscape body setup👍used them for 15 yrs now! Rolling billboard, and no unloading on the box truck setup. You get caught in the rain, your equipment stays dry! My Landscape truck, I use it to mulch! Can put 8 yds in it, and put my Kubota 2620 tractor on top of the mulch, that I use to put out the mulch👍they also turn sharp as a car

    I bought a new Isuzu npr back in 2017. It was a 6.0 gas, crew cab with 14 ft aluminum dump, underbody toolboxes and full length pass through storage at the front of the dump. Amazing truck. Never ever buy the diesel. It could fit 7 guys comfortably.

    • @Dustin922
      @Dustin922 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@taysliquidators4617 a couple reasons. The diesel is 10-12k more, they only get 1-2 mpg more than gas, and the maintenance is much more expensive. The gas is a very simple, reliable design. It will have the same pulling power because of gear ratios.

    I've wanted an Isuzu since I first started my lawn biz 18 years ago. I don't do lawns anymore, just trees. Finally got one year before last, 14 foot aluminum dump body. I either tow chipper and fill it with chips or tow lift with it (8k total trailer weight). End of the day it handles Max gcwr 20500 easily. Gas is plenty on these trucks, you don't need the diesel.

    I would not recommend as a diesel mechanic. The reliability of these things is absolutely awful about 90% of the time. Not only are they horribly engineered to work on, but it’s been taking months just to get simple parts for them.

    • @NZDIRT
      @NZDIRT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @nickwhite6717
      @nickwhite6717 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You obviously havent worked on them much then. Ive been on them for years now and theyre a dead simple vehicle to work on. Diesels only really had DPD issues and that was more a teething issue to do with the differential pressure sensor harness. Apart from that we only ever see them for services and some small maintenance items. Granted im in aus so parts situation here is quite different, we can get 90% of things over nighted within aus and most things are 2 wks max from Japan. But to say theyre unrelaible and shit to work on? Not a chance mate, just shows you havent had much to do with them
