Because of your demonstrable interest in privilege, I would recommend maybe doing a video on class. I'd propose that perhaps a healthy and mutually beneficial way to tackle one's guilt for having more privilege than others would be to actively contribute to organizations that work to reduce class inequality, level the playing field, and make opportunity more equitably distributed. One of the biggest ways influencers like you might be able to make a difference is by helping encourage people to organize, whether that be by joining a union or some similar organization yourself and sharing that experience with your audience, or by advocating for labor supporting organizations, etc. Get creative with it. (But again, the key to your question is class solidarity - in my opinion.)

I think there's a question unexplored here : entertainment can be educational - meaning that you can direct your creative energy towards making content that will teach whilst it can also entertain. Would you add value to a flawed system or work within it wilst symple accepting it to be everlasting?
And this is not an attack, its a genuine reaction to watching this video!

I like that you touch on topics that I always think about! Recently I've been thinking (aka driving myself into a bit of a dark hole), about the creation of existence/why the hell we are here/the possible afterlife concept/the soul - not in necessarily a theological way but also more of a scientific way. Would be interesting to see a video with your thoughts (if you don't have one already)

wow. before i type this, I want to make it clear that I appreciate all the creator's in ur mom's house and watch their content pretty regularly- BUT i cannot tell you how many times I've unsubscribed from Kelly in particular LOL. and it's nothing against him at ALL, I just realized that sometimes I would end up feeling bad about myself and my life after watching his videos. this video gave me a whole new perspective on that. Instead of thinking, "oh wow my life is so boring compared to his- what am i doing with my life?", I'll remember that a) he's worked hard to get where he is and b) he's simply an amazing storyteller and entertainer. in fact, i think this a good mindset to adopt when watching any and all internet creators in general. anyway, I loved all their perspectives on privilege and happiness+internet. Elliot's perspective on being a creator vs. a consumer also really hit home. Damn, Nathaniel- you really hit the mark with this one.

This documentary was really authentic and I feel like it shows the whole picture of how the internet shapes our lives. I was not really expecting that though, rather a love story due to both the title and the thumbnail. These "false expectations" actually illustrate a lot of the things sorrounding the topic of the video. If you had given the video a more straigthforward title and thumbnail, a lot of people might not have clicked. Having this "mistery" sorrounding the title going along with the thumbnail of course gives you a higher click rate... It is the way to do it if you want to play the game I guess, but it comes to show the "fakeness" of the internet and that we should take it with a pinch of salt.
The problem with social media is that it is packed with fear based marketing, showing you "what you will never be" unless you buy XXXX product. If you are feeling vulnerable or you are too young to understand, it can really harm you. It has made it even worse for toxic environments, like anorexia promoting communities or similar...
But on the other hand, the internet and social media can help you connect with other people and get inspired by others. So I think it is a great thing if consumed responsibly, which is not always easy.

I have a love/hate relationship with the internet. On one hand, it's amazing to have all the information of the world at your fingertips. The fact that I can learn a language, learn any skill or craft, communicate with people from all around the world, share my own art, videos, and creations with everyone... It's all amazing. But at the same time, I do miss that feeling I used to have when I didn't have the internet, or a phone, or a computer. It was just me and my creativity. Time went by more slowly, and I didn't have the same overwhelming anxiety and stress that inevitably comes from the internet, in forms of comparison or seeing these ideas of "a perfect life". I try to use the internet as a tool. To learn and to educate myself (and of course to enjoy and be entertained), but I also am trying to get to a point where I can step back and go without always feeling the need to be connected, because a lot of times it ends up being the opposite of connection.
I definitely think that the internet has changed me and made me a better person in a lot of ways, and also the opposite can be said. I struggle with it every day, but I'm trying to get to a better point of balance. ❤️

@@po.chmurna To be honest, simply being more present and mindful has helped me so much. When you're eating something, don't do anything else other than eating. Really taste the food and appreciate all the hard work that went into what is now on your plate. If you're walking, really notice your surroundings. What do you hear? What do you smell? What do you see? One of my favorite things to do is to go for long walks. I'll often take long pauses just to look around and find things that I've never noticed before. To notice certain cracks in a building, or maybe a bird who is jumping from branch to branch in a tree. To me, it's all these little moments that make life so magical. I try to capture those little moments in my own videos on my channel. The quiet moments that often go unnoticed.

So powerfully and authentically expressed. I’m so glad that your channel exists and captures these kinds of truths, and although I don’t know them, appreciate the creators here as well.
As a family doctor, literally my day job has been to listen to people’s lives. No matter how successful or not someone seems, and no matter how confident or happy, people have a depth about them in their daily lives that strangers and not-so-close friends will never usually see.
But there’s nothing particularly special about what I ask people, I think. Medical school isn’t necessary for the kinds of questions that reveal what someone is truly thinking. So fortunately, available to anyone at any time is the ability to ask others open-ended questions that don’t have single word answers. And then listening - really focusing and listening - you’ll hear the reverberations of everything that happened to them and the chimes of everything they care about. Almost always, the sound you’ll get from listening is a small echo of yourself, even if the person is completely different from you. I think that knowledge makes things less lonely.

  • @NathanMandjes

I re-read Homo Sapiens, the book by Yuval Harari. At the end, he talks about happiness and he raises some interesting points of view. First, happiness is just the effect of a bunch of neurotransmitters that react to certain situations. In comparison to thousands or million years ago, we generally probably aren’t more happy humans. The level of happiness is bounded in a preset scale. A hunter-gatherer, that kills a mammoth, which can provide months of food to the tribe, chemically responds the same way as we humans react on eating an ice-cream. A farmer that builds his first clay house receives the same dopamine rush as we humans buy the next big television. Maybe you can even suggest that modern humans, especially at this very moment, are less happy, because they get an overload of information, sugar-rushes. And there is a constant stream of media that makes us rushed and very insecure. The fact that we get more and more dopamine shots, doesn’t make us happier. It makes us more addicted and burnt out than ever I guess.

You did a BEAUTIFUL job of communicating the duality of social media and the inside look into the realities of our current digital age. Hope to see more videos like this!

Good stuff here. Once again giving us a meaningful takeaway through well crafted storytelling. I enjoy your content because it feels wholesome and not vapid or contrived.
I've wanted to start a channel based on holistic wellness for several years but haven't taken the leap primarily due to financial barriers like affording good equipment and editing software, time commitments like holding a fulltime job to pay bills etc. I know if I want to do it, I have to just start somewhere but coming from a very low-income background has been a consistent obstacle to following my passions. This video was kind of validating. I won't let it stop me, I will always keep working on my dreams...but I shouldn't beat myself up for the timing or not having resources.
Having creators to watch like yourself helps keep me focused on creating content that is helpful and meaningful, but also grounding myself in daily life, my relationships, and what feeds my soul.
    Much love ❤️

Thank you Nathaniel for this beautiful little film. You are talking about something, that I guess a lot of us are feeling right now, the loneliness, feeling stuck in life and trying to find out what's wrong with us by watching other people who seem to have it all. And there already are videos out there about the danger in watching instead of living. But your way to connect to others through your videos is so special, because you take us with you on your journey instead of just letting us watch. I just feel you have found a special language and part of that is your effort to be as honest and vunerable as possible. I always take a piece of good advice from your work, but never feel pressured to change myself or feel like something is wrong with me. Instead I feel understood.
    Thank you ❤

For years I've been inspired by your videos, grinding away so that one day I could have the type of life you live. Traveling the world, meeting new friends in other countries and spending each day to the fullest. It's just wild seeing someone want something that I'm trying to get away from. For me I have that friends styled life. Hanging out with roommates, my close friends are always nearby my brother and parents always ready to sit down and talk about games and tv shows. Now here I am about to move across the country and it's got me thinking again. Do I want this adventure?

This was great. I really think the fact that they live together and have in-person interactions built into their daily lives is what keeps them more tethered to reality and thus authentic and interesting, relative to a lot of solo TH-camrs who don’t have that community to ground them and challenge them to grow. (Like Ashley said, it’s important to have real human interactions!) They’ve all talked about how lonely being a TH-camr can be, and they seem to thrive in their communal situation even tho they’re quite different personalities.
