I love the era of portable radios that came with leather cases. They were well protected for outdoor use. Beaches, picnics etc or just listening to the ballgame with a beer on the back deck. I have a couple of modern radios I would love to have leather covers for.
I like messing around with making loop antennas on mediumwave. Those era radios often used the loopstick on their shortwave band so with some initiative you can make your loop switchable so it also inductive couples to the radio on those frequencies as well
A good mod for that would be to put a clear LED in place of the filament bulb... with a series resistor of course. 1 to 3k would probably be good if its a high intensity LED
This is a model that uses fake transistors to enhance the count, a fairly common practice back then. when radios were assessed by the transistor count, the more the better. Some were just placed in the PCB with all leads shorted together, ohers used the Base Collector junctions as diodes.

I also have one of these radios, I have changed all the capacitors and recalibrated it, it works great!
Nice radio

I had a green one I was 12. Wish your father and I still had one. It would magically transport us back in time and make us 12 years old again. 😂
