When music was music. There are a lot of great drummers but none can match Buddy's spirit...that's what separates him from all the rest.
You must have never heard Krupa.
Drummers everywhere , look at the power in that left hand ....the detexerity in his body and the composure in his mind .
To me the greatest technician in all that music ever has , or ever will produce .
I sat several times only 3 feet away from him , and watched and listened in awe ...as he displayed things that us mere mortals couldnt dream about , never mind play .
What God created when he made Buddy , really was a " once in 10 billion years thing "

What an awesome swing band but hats off to Buddy Rich the fastest hands in the industry and a left hand that most drummers today would kill for ...what amazing speed and talent he had

You actually think there are drummers today? Well, in pop music, that is. I know there are many fine ones otherwise, but Rich is something else.

I like sing, sing, sing where Harry and Gene Krupa were soloing with Benny Goodman. However I know Gene could not play like Buddy. Nobody could play the drums like Buddy Rich. Then or now, he was the best drummer there ever was or ever will be.
Drake Shihan Buddy was a better drummer. Gene was a better musician.

I saw Buddy at least 50 times in some of the strangest places including Aqueduct and Belmont race tracks at 10:00 in the morning. The audience was always filled with drummers and all of us would drop our jaws at that freakish left hand. No drummer, past or present can come close to that left hand!!!
He has the greatest left hand of any drummer before, or since.
I saw Buddy at Belmont too! I also saw him play with a 4 or 5 piece band between a Yankee double header many yrs ago. He played right near home plate..Buddy would play where ever they'd let him..LOL. The best was at a beach club in NJ where the full orchestra was in tee-shirts and shorts..Sat right in front..unbelievable..

The amazing thing is that when Buddy Rich was a year old he walked up to a drum and started keeping perfect time, he never had a lesson. Harry James started taking trumpet lessons at the age of 10, and by the age of 15 had mastered the trumpet!!
Buddy Rich on drums, Jack Perciful on piano, and Red Kelly on bass made up the greatest rhythm section in swing.
Arguably, this Rogers drumset in my opinion, the BEST DRUMSET OF ALL TIME !! Looks, sound, it had it all. A CLASSIC. His dynasonic snare was stolen soon after. GONE !!

Never heard a better version! Harry is the best trumpet player of modern music and Buddy a killer! Unforgettable!
Harry was best remembered as a bandleader. We forget what a great trumpet player he was and what a great jazz soloist he was. IMHO he was as good as any of them, including Sachmo, Dizzy, Eldridge, Maynard and Miles. Not saying they all weren't great. They all contributed to jazz in their own way. But Harry should rank up there along side them.

No words to describe the musicianship, soul, and spirt of the musicians during this particular era.
Indeed, though the piece was composed much earlier in 1938.
I watched this identical truly atomic rendition live at Harrah's Tahoe in June 1964 while I was working at Harrah's.
My parents and I ran into Mr James in the hallway while going back to our room at a hotel in Vegas about 1964.

Buddy was two years away from putting the big band together again. He stated in an interview the james band had great Ernie Wilkins charts, but couldn't play them at their home base in Vegas. Mel Torme, in the Buddy bio, said that Vegas did not appreciate jazz.
I saw Buddy Rich @ The Electric Factory in 1969. Got his autograph.
Turns out Harry James' tone in the Bix Beiderbecke film "Young Man With A Horn" starring Kirk Douglas inspired Hugh Masekela to the trumpet. Dig that!

1:52 I watched this video in the early days of TH-cam and who ever posted it ran the solo through an equalizer and you could hear the melody in Buddy's solo . It showed the pure genius of Buddy Rich

What a great take by two masters of the craft. Got to see Rich live a couple of times but never saw James live - this video and others on TH-cam have given me a new respect for him. Probably the best trumpeter who was also a swing-band leader, and it's obvious he ran a tight band (as did Buddy with his own bands). Lots of great energy here!
As a 66 year old professional classical trombonist (retired) it’s kinda embarrassing to admit that until this video, I never really ever listened to Harry James. Knew he was great, heard Buddy Rich many times (including live), but James? Zilch. Wow, what a fat, brilliant, vibrant sound that dude had. Sweet, ever-so-slightly overblown, and unique. And Rich never fails to inspire me…

If you watch carefully, you can see Harry rotate his trumpet to bend the notes. Never noticed it before until now. 1:08

First drummer I ever saw that used the top and bottom of the cymbal as past of his solo. Technically gifted, hard swinging, very musical. Although there are more modern drummers I prefer like Elvin, no drummer in jazz will probably ever combine these three elements of virtuosity to this level of excellence.
No drummer will ever present the complete possibilities of rudimental and jazz drumming like Buddy, and do it so perfectly creatively. He was a prodigy, one that will never happen again. I have been around drums for 50 years, and there are not too many drummers I haven't seen or heard, from Ronald Bruner, Jr and John Blackwell to Barriemore Barlow and John Guerin and Dino Danelli, and about everyone in between. Watching Buddy play, never mind his solos that take our breath away, is like watching and listening to the dictionary of jazz vis a vis drums. One of my greatest regrets in my life was never seeing Buddy play live.
@@oneanddone7992 Well said. Buddy was an acquaintance of mine, and I saw him 50 times in concert. He was a cool cat, and in his live shows, was absolutely beyond description to see behind those drums.
Even some today's best big bands can't reach the sound bands like these could back then. Just saying. Excellent.

Truly amazing, you can hear the melody in his solo ! Jaw dropping ! OMG, the best ever, never to be equaled in a thousand years.
Arguably the best written changes in Jazz. If you are gigging with an ensemble that can "handle it", do this song at about 240 beats per minute or faster and drive the audience insane. It's the ultimate song for soloists, provided that they have about 10 solid choruses worked up. I try to put a "Rock and Roll" Tenor sound to it, a la Zoot Sims...
The ensemble bars between the 1:40 mark and Buddy's solo are outrageous. Harry and Buddy get the attention but what a great band this is.

Harry started earlier than ten. His father was a cornet player with the circus and Harry was on the road with him. Playing with a circus band is grueling work and Harry eventually played with his father, who was his only instructor ever!
I like that Harry does most of his soloing in the midrange of the horn. Gets that big fat tone. People like the screeching of guys like Ferguson but I like Harry's sound better!

The "original" tune was written by Ray Noble in 1938 and is a jazz standard, and lots of folks covered it, not just Brown & Roach. In fact, Charlie Barnett had a substantial hit with it in 1939 with his big band - 16 years before Clifford got a hold of it.

I had Harry James Olds Ambassador trumpet and played it in high school band. Some kid put crazy glue in the valves as a practical joke. I hated school.
Harry would never play an Ambassador. It was a nice student model, but nothing more.

There are probably more Big Bands per capita in Japan than anywhere else! Lots of pro big bands, plus high school as well. Eric Miyashiro has a big band there too!

Thanks, I found it and listened. It is excellent, as is this Rich/James version. Two different takes on the same song, both outstanding.
There are a lot of fine drummers out there who have speed, control and power, but they don't have the musicality that drummers like Buddy had. when you want competition for how fast you can play the kicks petals or straight drum strokes, then you just listen to the machine gun sounding nonsense of today's drummers. But, When you want to listen to a good drum compositions, that includes inflections, mood and inspirational thought provoking joy, then you listen to the ones like buddy!
Case closed. End of lecture.
