    Great video! I bought a 1962 convertible on July 2nd 1993 for $1,000. It was baby blue just like the picture in the brochure. It was sitting outside for a few years. It started right up after a new battery. I wanted to drive it to my inlaws for the Fourth of July. DMV was closed so I drove it 200 miles on bias-ply tires, no registration or insurance and made the round trip! I sold it two years later when my daughter was born.

    My brother owned a 64 in that color. It was straight with original paint and interior and was an absolute tank. One dangerous thing about these is that the detents on the transmission gear selector would wear out to where the shift lever could drop out of park. A rule of ownership is that you never left the car running lest it drop into gear and take off on its own. Someone at the shop doing a front end rebuild on my brother’s car did not heed those instructions and the car promptly dropped into reverse and crunched the front end of another car. It suffered a cracked tail light and scratches on the bumper.

    Hi Steve, Great video on this beautiful Lincoln. I've always loved big cars, and Lincoln definitely fit the bill. After these 2 Lincoln videos I'm gonna dig out my 70 Continental and do a short road trip. Those 430s and 462s were great engines. The few I've owned you could stand a nickel on end on top of the engine. I believe these beasts tip the scale at around 5000lbs. The torque from these engines would definitely do the job and much more. Have blessed day everyone 🤙🏼 Namaste 🙏🏼

    • @Czechbound
      @Czechbound ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Best of luck with your '70 - it sounds like a great road trip ! Question please : Is the gas mileage really as bad as the magazine says ( 9-13 mpg ) ?

    • @burthenry7740
      @burthenry7740 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Czechbound Yep, my 1962 Thunderbird, (which was built alongside the Lincolns) averaged 12 mpg at 70-75 mph. It was smaller and had a smaller 390 cu. in. engine!

    • @chrisscearce
      @chrisscearce ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Czechbound Hi, yes, it gets the same MPG as my V10 RV, and I once owned an 87 460 RV, and they all got about the same MPG. I have a soft spot for white vehicles, especially 2dr land yachts. I have a small hoard of all different makes stored in an old furniture store downtown. Grand Prix, Thunderbird, Imperial, Riviera, and a few wagons from the early 70s. All are factory white, and all are in almost mint condition. I'm on the look out for 72 Montego GT (white of course) but I'm also a fan of the odd colours from back then. The orange, yellows, or browns, but they really have to be appealing. For example triple brown or triple green not a fan of. A brown car with brown interior just doesn't pop for me. Sometimes even white on white can be too much. Unless it's from the 50s or early 60s I'm not a fan of white with red interior. Red cars are not on my list of keepers. Resale red makes me $ tho. Thanks for commenting and have a blessed day 🤙🏼 Namaste 🙏🏼

    • @chrisscearce
      @chrisscearce ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Burt Henry Hi Burt, I've owned a few 60s 390s, and yep, you're correct. Whenever someone asks about MPG, I tell them it gets horrible MPG compared to a Toyota or Hond, but for a 70ish 60ish ride, it gets what it's supposed to get. It doesn't 'waste' fuel its using the amount it was designed for. At church I was once asked about my GMC Suburban K2500 454 why I would drive something like that, and that I should go for something more efficient like a Toyota or Honda. My reply was when Toyota or Honda start to make something that will haul 9 passengers while pulling 10k without difficulty and the AC blowing ice cubes cruising 70mph.That I would think about it. 🤔 Thanks for commenting 🤙🏼 Namaste 🙏🏼

    Yup, with the VIN, you win: 2 for 1962 model year, Y for Wixom, MI assembly, 82 for four door Continental sedan, H for 430 V8 with two barrel and the rest is the production sequence. The Wixom, MI plant operated from 1957 to 2007 and made over 6 million vehicles in the 50 years it operated. It was also the "exclusive" Lincoln plant for a time.
    No tag, can't brag, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 53A for Continental four door sedan, M for Sultana White exterior paint, 71 for White interior trim, maybe 11 for Boston, MA sales district, possible 4 for dual range automatic transmission, among other codes. Correct, that is "genuine" California walnut veneer on the door panels and instrument panels.
    No, Per-Lux was a company that made ignition conversion kits. In 1983, the California Air Resourced Board issued a ruling that their devices did not render pollution controls ineffective. This car probably had an electronic ignition conversion kit installed at one time and that's what card is from. There were/are other companies that made similar kits. Per-Lux also made driving lights. Today, there is a company called Anvil Cases and a gun shop on that property address shown on the card. Safelite Auto Glass is now at the address where that Midas was in 1978. Based on the 1981 insurance paper in the glove box, it's reasonable to say this car was on the road close to 20 years from 1962 to 1981-1982, and maybe beyond. So it lived a "good life" for a length of time and was in reasonable enough condition on Thursday April 27, 1978 to get exhaust work done.

      @@tomwesley7884 What type of convertible?

    • @tomwesley7884
      @tomwesley7884 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@googleusergp It was a '95 Sunfire, triple white, code D 2.3 Quad 4. If I remember correctly, sequence number 454. Trunk had always leaked, so I had taken out the liner/spare tire cover in attempts to keep things dry. The SPID is on the spare tire cover. I turned the car in for scrap, my daughter had took it on the interstate, blew a hole in the block at about 161,000. I didn't have anywhere to set it aside here, so the engine was the final nail in the coffin. I was depending on that engine to at least make it through my daughter's last year in high school. I had recently replaced the water pump, timing chain, fuel lines, brake lines, ignition coils. Transaxle was shifting kinda weird, but was still going through the gears as it should. It also needed the rear "frame" refabricated from behind the rear wheels to the rear bumper due to severe rust. So I did the "right" thing and got her a 2000 Z24 convertible with 60,000 miles, don't think she appreciates it much anyway. Oh well, what can a guy do? I read you got that G6, I've looked at several of those.

      I never intentionally damage any of these vehicles. But if the glue that secures the glove box door panel is that dry and allows the panel to fall off on its own, or if the gas filler emblem ejects without prompting, that's "no harm done" territory. 8:34 gave me a chuckle, Steve. It's been 70 odd years since I've thought about it, but when I was a wee sprat, I'd sometimes try to gain her attention when my Gram was having a conversation with someone and she'd say, "Don't be a Butt-Inski." Funny how things are remembered when we achieve geezerdom, eh? Also, "Gill" is a measure of whiskey in Scotland, which I think reflects favorably upon the town's Colonial founders. Rear hinged back doors were great for "Fire Drills" when a carload of us were "Draggin' the Strip" at night. I had a '48 Dodge back then with such doors, which gave us a two-second edge over the car next to us at a stoplight. Rock on.

    Continentals were first introduced as full unit construction starting in 1958 but the 1961 Continental when introduced was immediately recognised as the standard for luxury and understated elegance. At the time Cadillac was still using tailfins and Chrysler was still suffering from Virgil Exner's "Suddenly '60 " hangover. Of course when I was in the second grade the image of the 1961 Continental was burned into my memory as the car John F. Kennedy was assassinated in which I saw on display at the Henry Ford Museum that was rebuilt after that with an armored roof doors and windows and an uprated engine because of the added weight.

    • @throckmorton8477
      @throckmorton8477 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Other 'suicide' terms were the suicide knobs attached to steering wheels, because they could catch your sleeve while driving and wreck you. Also called spinner knobs or 'necker knobs'. And the foot clutch and tank mounted shifters on old motorcycles. Suicide shift.

    • @gteefxr3094
      @gteefxr3094 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, the tank shift/foot clutch that was stock on old bikes wasn't called "suicide." The "suicide" set-up was hand/jockey-shift with a sprung foot-clutch that you had to keep your foot on to keep the clutch disengaged as opposed to "stock", where, due to the friction mechanism in the pedal assy. you could remove your foot and the clutch would remain disengaged. Combine that with no front-brake and you truly have a "suicide" rig.😀👍

    • @throckmorton8477
      @throckmorton8477 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gteefxr3094 Yes, that is correct. The old timers would make the clutch work like a car clutch and called it a suicide shift. Us younger 'snapperwhiffers' called it a suicide clutch. And taking your hand off the handlebars to shift was a suicide shift. Again, not really correct terminology.
      But, I sure would like to have all the stuff (sheet metal, tank shifters, foot clutches, etc.) that was thrown away during the 1960's off of all those old Harleys and Indians !

As a pump jockey at a Texaco, you had "those cars/customers" that stood out. One of these barges would would dock at the pump island seemingly suffering from rot in it's lowrider stance. Also in dire need of a muffler. This particular drop top edition in Ben Hurr Gold, piloted by a rather chunky lady and her gigantic St Bernard- that took up a lot of the rear seat. Most of the time handing the lucky attendant a few rubles of that hard sticky like candy. Always ordering maybe $2 or $3 and away the log plumed. This body style was certainly a radical departure from the previous model! In all honesty, I can’t really decide which iteration I prefer? I’ve always loved the elegant and understated look of these 60’s era yachts, but on the other hand, the “50’s Flamboyance” of the previous model was perfectly suited for its time!
