  • Haversacks, canteens, ammunition, knapsacks, caps, coats, shirts, wool pants, shoes and of course, a musket. Civil War soldiers on both the Union and Confederate side had to be ready to march at a moment's notice, and therefore carried "their house" on their backs on battlefields, cities and towns across America.
    Douglas Ullman Jr. is a historian and battlefield preservationist.
    The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

    That was a great summation of the soldier’s gear. What is hard to “show” is how heavy all this stuff was. Thank you for this video.

      The weight was one thing I wasn't anticipating when I started reenacting! The old heads that I'm with don't mention it because it is second nature to them and they are used to it! It just takes time to get used to.

    Good information and very well presented. I have been a Civil War reenactor for 24 years, both in the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues (Grandy's Battery) and 12th Texas field artillery (Val Verde battery). It's been one of the highlights of my life.

    After reading the 1861 U.S. regulations, I was under the impression that the government had provided some socks.

    Very informative. Wool in summer! Oh my goodness, but its wicking qualities and strength were what helped soldiers stay more comfortable and free of scratches and scrapes. When Tsar Nicholas' Russian army had new uniforms designed he got a set and marched all over the Crimea (his summer home) to see how well it withstood a long march. Evidently he was pleased with it and there is a photo of him all kitted out.

    What do cartridges look like- how are they composed? What do the percussion caps look like and how are they fitted? Shoes no left or right and how do sizes compare today. Thanks!

    Soldiers were issued domet flannel not canton flannel shirts. Canton flannel is used for under garments and is very soft. Domet flannel is what was referred to as the insufferable horse hair shirts.

    Is the 1853 enfield rifle better then a Springfield?

    • @briansass4865
      @briansass4865 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      different is my understanding. Not better. Bullet path is more parabolic, so Enfield needed to be aimed higher. Springfield's path was straighter.

    your shirt is wrong us should be wearing an issued shirt the only time you wear a civilian shirt is if you were straight out of the depot
