I have a D handled Bowie from the late Canadian custom maker George Tichbourne who knew his stuff. For current production knives, I'm really impressed by the Cold Steel Drop Forge Bowie, which is surprisingly lively and affordable.
Excellent considerations here!! Even down to the aesthetic, which I personally sometimes overlook, but it’s so valued throughout human history. I’m fascinated with the that idea of “intuiting” how to use the weapon through functional use. Which muscles to use and when, when to engage the wrist in the chopping motion, the angle of engagement, slackening or strengthening or shifting of the grip, it all comes from using the knife day to day. That’s why I love the Kukri. From what I’ve heard, the Gurkha soldiers needed no training in using the kukri, and there is no formal martial art associated with it because they are raised using the knife as their primary tool. They know how to use their knife, they know how to fight, and therefore they know how to knife fight.
I like the Trail Master Bowie most of all because of the true full tang ,cable tang just doesn't appeal to me, although there's many knife enthusiast who like and love those cable tang knives from Cold Steel 📸⚔️

I think Mr. Bagwell also suggested Jimmy Crowell as a custom maker in his book. Jimmy was one of my instructors at the ABS blade school. Don't know, haven't kept in touch, he may have a long waiting list tto.

I have a bunch of production Bowie knives, and I always wanted some form of Bagwell. Looks like a Cold Steel is as close as I am going to get this lifetime, but I'll make do, LOL!
OMG, I bought a Cold Steel Laredo in 3V per your recommendation, and it fits exactly into what I need from a knife. The only way to do better is get a custom knife designed specifically for me. Muchísimas gracias, I would’ve never made the commitment otherwise. I like it so much I think I’ll buy an other.

Kailash Blades, a khukuri house in Nepal, produces a very impressive model called the Regent Bowie that has a lot of Bagwell DNA in it. I am strongly considering one of theirs.
I bought my first Bowie at the age of 13 for 18 shillings and sixpence, it was made by Jack Adams of Sheffield. Sadly Jack Adams has passed on but the family firm remains and I have several more recent Bowie knives is from the same factory. I had the privilege before he passed on to speak to Jack Adams. Yes Bowie knives are an American Icon, but they are also a Sheffield Icon as many historical examples will attest. My favourite user fits my hand like a glove, but then it would as I crafted the hilt myself.

I must say that bagwell made an evolution of the antique Bowie knives back in 1835 - 1850...the bagwell are far more slender than the bowie's back in the days... But I like it that he put the old touch in it like the coffin handles or the dogbone handles.... As the original genuine bowie knife or knives as we talk about the bowie knives from rezin bowie.. The original genuine bowie knife are straight back bowie knives... The history is fantastic and the evolution of the bowie knives are awesome with so many different styles.. 😉
I've had great luck buying Randalls from Nordic Knives. I started (while on active duty) in the early 70s with A.G.Russell with a couple Moreseths. The Cutting Edge is mostly collectibles, but worthwhile. Blackjack made a bowie d similar to a Randall 14 but inexpensive.
David Harvey is the best to deal with. I’ve dealt with him for over a decade. Randall knives are for a dying breed that understand quality and legacy 🙏🏽🔥👊🏽

Do you have a Searles Bowie in your collection? I have one made by Legacy Arms in 1060 steel in the Philipines. This is an excellent copy of the original in the Alamo museum from the 1830s. My understanding is they often used the bowie with the main edge up at that time. The knife feel quite good in the hand in this position, and with the blade edge down also. It would be very interesting to see you give an objective review of it. I've looked at a lot of your videos, and really enjoy them. Thanks!
Great question! The “frog stud” is a traditional design that allows the owner to carry the Bowie in its sheath by hanging it “inside waistband” on the belt.
@@RolandoEstocada I see, therefore the stub keeps the sheath in his place and the clothes makes all inconspicuous. I imagine that serves the purposes of carry where is needed concealed but fast at the moment of need, like the gamblers when one of them do a sneaky trick with the cards.

Legacy Collectibles, Poshland, I have hear some good things about their steel and forging techniques. As I said the fit and finish on the Poshland I bought is good in fact I haven't seen any better in a product knife.

Como esta ca na? My Wife is a wonder from Pangasinan? I have many blades to include this one and the Natchez Bowie, I have been a Soldier, understand these things and use them. Concerning the Laredo, it seems. Correct in every respect but I am left with a question concerning its construction and can it take abuse. Bowies are meant as weapons first and forest tools second. I also like the other, mass is important to its edge and point, especially the back cut. My favorite for overseas work may be one of two, both having the mass to beat aside a bolo. Pirates, usually have edged weapons now as well as firearms. I must expect the worst, a bolo. Back in the 1970s, as a LRRP and then Ranger, the combatives training we received from both Native Americans and Filipinos with Gerber MK I knives, saved my life... I regretfully sold my Hell's Bell Bowie back in the late 1990s, it was beautiful and lively. The Cold Steel Laredo Bowie is an outstanding production knife! Another great choice albeit not a Bowie is the Busse Mr. Mo-Fo, I sharpened the clip, and it too is very lively! Unfortunately I don't think that it is still being made. I'm in the market for a new Bowie. I am not a traditionalist, so I'm looking for a Bowie with a 10"-12" non-reflective blade, has an exposed tang and micarta scales. I know that they are not as plentiful and may have to get one custom made, I just don't like rat tail tanged knives. The Nordick knives website has some really nice bowies. I'm looking at one made by Reggie Barker, it has a satin finished 10" blade for $495.00, used but in excellent condition.
Firstly, I am deeply grateful for your service. From what I understand, US CQC methodologies were really tested to its limits in those days. I’m a big fan of Busse and own a few of their blades (their Silent Knight is my favorite). Nordic is great and what a selection of Randall’s they have. I got my 1-8” from them (David Harvey is great to deal with). I’m going to start looking into the Brazilian Bowie knife makers, as their work has really been outstanding over the years. You can’t go wrong with a Laredo. Super lively and robust! 🙏🏽

I love my 1917! my hands are kinda big (long fingers square palm) and it actually feels delicate and precise in my case. Im really stoked to see content from someone, educated and credible, giving props to my favorite production knife of all time. ive been tempted to pick up the cold steel 1917 hybrid cutlass to make a matching set.
Two full moons ago a man went early in the morning to tend his sheep and goats here in my Caribbean island. A total of 16 sheep & 3 goats were dead with wounds on their necks and legs. These creatures of the night are real and the Filipino folklore talks about them. Practitioners of Kali have engaged them in the highlands of The Philippines. I have seen my share of some of them while living homeless camping out of a minivan and tents with my dogs in the forests and beaches. A couple of evil red eyed dogs attacked and maimed my two little ones. Then one night they came for me. Although I am not trained at all in blades I am proficient with the machete as an agricultural tool and use it with wrist action and two fingers. When the red eyed black dog squared off I spun my machete in circles. The beast knew it was unable to close the gap, turned around and left. My interest in the Bowie is because it was a weapon used against wild beasts, from wolves, mountain lions and bears. What are your thoughts on engaging non human oponents? Have you considered such scenarios?
I own over 100 blades of all kind of shapes and sizes... If i have to take one and leave back the rest, no doubt i'll take my Cold Steel Trailmaster in carbon V steel with me.
😎 You've got me looking at bowies. Another option maybe Svörd von Tempsky Bowie, kind of what i think of when i think of 'bowie', a big blade that's actually pretty simple and tough (trouble with bowies, we don't actually know what the original really looked like). First seen here - th-cam.com/video/FUZ_TgusF8U/w-d-xo.html Note: i've seen this guy break blades in 3V supersteel like they were made of glass and have yet to see him actually fail to destroy any knife. This knife was an older model with a 5 millimeter blade stock, the new ones are 7millimeter. Don't know if it actually has the false edge though (btw - seen a report that the Cold Steel drop forged bowie does not actually have a false edge).
Wow! Talk about swallowing all that hype!! All that theory is great, but no one ever gets into a real knife fight! Wear the bowie, but you will get slashed with someone's box-cutter or ventilated with a screw driver before you are even aware of being attacked! Reality check. That Hell's Bell Bowie doesn't look like most Bowies from that era. It appears that they were more robust because they were used for camp work 99% more often than killing similarly armed people (or any other critters).

The Natchez Bowie is fairly lively in the hand. The Trail Master is lively too. Laredo is fantastic! ⚔️

Precisely. It is VERY scary when a true expert carries a bowie inconspicuously. I’ve seen it and it is mesmerizing and frightening at the same time.

Another option maybe Svörd von Tempsky Bowie, kind of what i think of when i think of 'bowie', a big blade that's actually pretty simple and tough (trouble with bowies, we don't actually know what the original really looked like). First seen here - th-cam.com/video/FUZ_TgusF8U/w-d-xo.html Note: i've seen this guy break blades in 3V supersteel like they were made of glass and have yet to see him actually fail to destroy any knife. This knife was an older model with a 5 millimeter blade stock, the new ones are 7millimeter. Don't know if it actually has the false edge though (btw - seen a report that the Cold Steel drop forged bowie does not actually have a false edge).

Wow! Talk about swallowing all that hype!! All that theory is great, but no one ever gets into a real knife fight! Wear the bowie, but you will get slashed with someone's box-cutter or ventilated with a screw driver before you are even aware of being attacked! Reality check. That Hell's Bell Bowie doesn't look like most Bowies from that era. It appears that they were more robust because they were used for camp work 99% more often than killing similarly armed people (or any other critters).
