Just to give honor & praise for her. Rest in Peace to the English voice actress of Misty, Rachael Lillis. Her voice will be a constant to the childhood memories of every Pokemon fan who watched the anime since Kanto.
The reasoning for Sabrina's range is that after the events of Gen 1 and Gen 2, she retires from being a Gym Leader to persue an acting career, which is fully realized in Black/White 2 where she can star in some of the movies the player can produce and also show up as a participant in the post-game World Championship where you can battle older trainers from different regions.

There's also lore about her getting a better grasp on her Power and her visions getting stronger as she got older. After her encounter with Red she foresaw a battle with Gold and Etc. Etc., you know the rest.
Additionally, as far as... Story. She has been depicted as having troubles with her psychic powers. Gen 2 has her more in control and able to relax... Also like there was more of an antagonist vibe for plenty of the higher ups in Gen 1, down to the final gym leader being... A mob boss
Erika is deceptively smart because while she is elegant and dainty, her gen 1 team are all carnivorous plants with a huge lean towards poison and danger & general. It's a nice contrast that elevates her design through irony.
@XDF It's also a reference to her actual occupation in the games. Her gym is also a traditional Japanese flower arranging school for girls. Hence why her gym is female only, and why she only really wears kimonos and hakamas, and why she doesn't wear the Western clothes that she does in the anime.
@@brightlight8852 That makes sense - it would have been nice to see some further diversity in the kimono style - but i can only epect so much from Pokemon :P
@XDF let's add something else to this erika is also into fashion and her other profession is she's a perfumer hence why she lots of grass type with her such as bellsprout weepingbell and victoribell as well as vileplume she use those grass types to help her make her perfumes this is on alot of her older pokemon cards as well as said in the anime
Even though Ash and Red are technically different characters, I like the cohesion in styling, since Ash is supposed to be filling Red’s role in the anime. I will say that because Ash had the benefit of going to different regions, he got more variation in his styling in a way that Red never got, even if the color palette stayed roughly the same.
Love your point on Ash's style evo by traveling cross-region. So true. And yeah, I wanted to include at least 1 Ash reference for the sake of comparison. 👍🏽
In her Let's Go! appearance, Agatha also gets laced boots in addition to the shawl, which is a small thing, but a detail that makes her look more active, indicating how she never lost her rambunctious side even in her old age.
Surge was always one of my favorite leaders for the fight he gave Ash in the anime and his big beefy "What Japan thinks of America" personality and design. If I were to do anything to elevate Lt. Surge's design without a full overhaul, it would be playing a bit more with his identity and personality. Give him the sunglasses from the anime, give him a stopwatch or a whistle and let him open his jacket up to show off his muscles and change his color pallate and cammo from Forest to Desert. Maybe give him a deeper tan and use his open jacket to show off some farmers tanlines. Its still not nessesarily sending "electric" but its sending some heavy duty "athletic army sergrant" vibes that ties into the kinds of Pokemon he uses. His roster is made up of fast and bulky Pokemon like Electrode Raichu and Electevire so tying him to them helps make his design make more sense.
It's funny that he *isn't* in desert camo. Given that the first gen had a lot more real world timeline stuff in it, he likely would have been in the first Gulf war. And deserts are associated with electricity in Japanese media anyway.
Loving this new take on fashion with the notable trainers of each region Honestly when i think of this idea, Unova immediately comes to mind. Not only within the likes of Elesa/Brycen for example, but even regular Ace trainers that look like they just came off a runway Gen 5/6 fashion was peak imo
SabriMOTHER and LoreSLAY ATE AND LEFT NO CRUMBS. Those two were my favorites when I was little, they were memorable because they were both elegant and mysterious, that is always a fascinating combination!!
Did not know Giovanni downgraded his suit to that flat mess in the newer games, but thank God he came back strong with that respectable coat and hat outfit. That is a man that should NEVER look like he's trying to be some kind of casual tech-industry investor, all his designers should just repeat to themselves: "old school or go back to design school".
As a kid, Lt. Surge being electric type always felt weird to me; you're definitely right that the hair (and name) are the only electric connections. He seems more like a fighting type, or even ground or grass type, with the military connection and brown and green camo.
The extravagant Sabrina comes from Gen 5, in Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 there was a place called PokerStar Studios in which the player can do movies and as a guest star Sabrina can appears as the antagonist of the film. Blaine is interesting cause he evolved from the mad scientist look ( a look prominent at the time by characters like Dr. Wily and Dr. Light from MegaMan)
Characters like Red and Terry Bogard are my key inspirations for styling my outfits with a baseball cap. I usually like to use my black leather cap with a white shirt and black leather pants.
I am noticing it more now that the styling for some gym leaders are often connected to some side job, hobby, or something they were a part of regularly in the past that highlights their background. Like Lt. Surge. But Brawly's style in Hoenn for Gen 6 is probably one of my favorites. He has an excellent male style transition and depicts both being a surfer and the fighting type gym leader very well. Throwing his character into the Alola region would've made sense too. Blaine and Sabrina were peak in changes. Great video
Blaine’s HGSS fit is absolute “silver fox” energy. He definitely slips that hat and outfit on before trying to pick up ladies at the local bingo nights.
This might be a wild idea, but I would absolutely LOVE for you to pick a handful of designs from series you've covered that you think were missed potential and design a new outfit for them.
With Erika I think the biggest missed opportunity was in the print. I think a smart print that reflects her flower, especially the flower she's named after, could've added a little something to her design! I agree on Lance's Lets Go Design. I'm pretty sure it was drawing more inspiration from his Gen 1 character art and sprite but I think they could've done that and still harmonized more with his other appearances.
Always liked Sabrinas original appearance and her unique fashion sense. Was a bit disappointed that Sabrina in Gen 5 then exchanged her red and black bodysuit for a new chic look and shortened her hair. At least she slays in her movie role outfit as the witch queen and the Lets Go remake again refined her original look and accentuated her psychic persona, with glowing hands, eyes and moving her very long hair like a whip, presumably with her telekinesis.
oh and for context: Blue/Gary was originally known as Green in Japan (although his name, and color scheme to go with it, has bounced around a little bit)
With Johto are you going to include Blue again and Janine? And I've gotta agree with younger you that Misty's looks just work; her main personality is a girly tomboy which her anime and original looks get across. Her all white like a bride, no longer tying her hair back (again, she swims so this makes her look less experienced), and covering up feels more like "girl goes through puberty and is pressured into being more feminine and covering up" with her poses even being less tough. And she's the tough one of the generation's brains-brawn-beauty trio. It'd be like Claire suddenly turning her cape into an apron.
Maybe do a Pokémon Masters Signa Suit (alternate costume) video, if you want to rate a full on fashion show? That game's costumes really leans into the idea that Pokémon battles are a sport, and that televised matches are showtime for high-ranking trainers. Side note: Professor Oak's JP name is Professor Ookido (Orchid), making purple an on-theme colour for his family. Blue's JP name is Green, so his green and purple costume is literally him just wearing his name.
I peeped some of the Masters looks in doing research for the latest video - and yeah, there will def be a separate Masters video - very pleased from the peeks I've gotten so far. 👍🏽
@@XDF Will you also be doing the other outfits from that game (Seasonal outfits and Special Costumes) or just Sygna Suits? There's so many Seasonals that it might make for its own video even. And now we just got a new series of outfits in the form of Arc Suits too. Would love to hear your thought on all these!
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Sabrina (along with some other gym leaders besides Giovanni) is a secret member of Team Rocket, and her outfit really helped sell that for me. She also looks great in a Team Rocket outfit with a cute skirt, she *HAS* the range.
For me Erika's dress is the most beautiful outfit to me, I love the traditional cultural inclusion and I bet that kimono and hakama she's wearing is probably the most expensive outfits from Kanto considering how expensive traditional kimonos tend to be.
I think that with the let’s go games Agatha has a more subtle evolution. In the previous games it’s definitely a generic old lady in a purple dress and white apron, but in her latest incarnation her shawl had little patterns that look like little Japanese paper ghost and the trim of the apron has little mean faces on them. They were able to stick to the original silhouette with an extra touch of spooky. Also a cane can definitely be a fashion statement unto itself just from the fact that the design changes from a generic pokeball cane to something with a little more character.
Outside of Lance I think Erika has my favorite style in Kanto, anything that's a long pretty dress is totally my bias lol. I'd love to see them keep the Kimono but give her a slightly darker & more saturated green, as well as add some more black and/or white to make it more visually engaging in future redesigns of her 💚. Thanks for the video it was very interesting!
Yes - many folks have mentioned how Erika is kinda stuck to that design based on her job/role. But like you said, I think playing with more color variation can at least change things up a bit.
If I were a Pokemon Trainer I would like to be a Dark trainer or Poison, my favorites types, so, I guess I should use a long and black gabardine, maybe my aviator glasses because I like to use sun glasses all the time, also shirt in bloody red and and long and fit jeans. Also a belt, I like to be and look formal. Of course I would use another extra belt for the pokeballs in my hip and I would wear mocasines. Also I would use a comb over haircut or a mini pony tail(my hair is not long enough). That is my pokemon trainer outfit. ..... and I will look bad because I am fat jajajajajajaja
Love your ideas for your pokemon style! I thought I commented on this earlier. And don't be down on yourself - I'm sure you'd look just fine as long as you're confident!
Idk if it's been mentioned, but Lt. Surge seems pretty clearly based on Guile from SF2, but with Electric-type hair (Guile's hair was busy being used by Stroheim in Battle Tendency, I guess.) And Bruno is beefier/wilder Ryu.
Maybe Surge could keep outfit mostly the same, but communicate the electric type with some accessories such as reflective straps like the ones worn by security and safety personal, as well as a toolbelt to invoke a military mechanic
This is a great video, but now you've opened Pandora's box. Expect people asking after Digimon or Beyblade. Mind Beyblade had some pretty out there looks, especially compared to Pokémon. It's the crazy anime hair and having so many seasons to completely leave reality behind.
Lt. Surge's design strikes me as one of those that would be interesting/cool to Japanese kids, as a sort of stereotypical American army guy, but I don't know why they gave him like... no electric-type elements, like some sort of accessory. I definitely prefer his design with the sunglasses and tank top just because it feels less like an outright uniform.
surge doesn't work for two reasons: no hat and no shoulder pieces signifying his rank. you can excuse his lack of a hat since it is normal for soldiers to not wear hats indoors, but there should be shoulder pieces on his uniform since he has an officer rank. hell put a medal or two on his top too while we're at it.
Fun video but a little disappointed you didn't cover Green's Alolan outfit like you did for Red. They're both simple sure but I like the contrast in intent between the two outfits. Red is there just for the Battle Tree while Green is clearly using the Battle Tree as an excuse to vacation on a tropical island. At least that's the vibe I get lol.
Bruno doesn't need some fashion statement for a good cohesive design. Everything you see perfectly illustrates who he is and what he's about with unnecessary garments
