It was super difficult to understand what the people in Akita were saying when I studied there, especially since I had only been learning Japanese for a couple of years at that point and wasn't at all comfortable with even standard Japanese. And there were a lot of elderly folks there who only spoke in the Akita dialect, and you know how people's speech tends to get more difficult to figure out when they age, so it was doubly difficult lol.

  • @Tohlemiach

I was surprised to hear the voiced consonants and "nda" as a sentence starter because the only other place I've heard that was in the anime "Mashiro no Oto" in which the main character speaks Tsugaru-ben. Turns out, Tsugaru is in Aomori prefecture which is right next to Akita, so it makes a lot of sense that they'd sound similar.
Also, the "be" sentence ender was a dead giveaway that it's a Tohoku dialect. So amazing how many different dialects there are in Japanese.

I lived in Okinawa for a few years and got to explore many parts of the country including Hokkaido. I don't speak a lick of japanese but I was able to discern the differences to dialect. Tokyo spoke very clearly as myself, a non-speaker, could make out words. Okinawa spoke similarly though their words were more mashed together and they talked a little slower. I only spent a few weeks in Hokkaido but they talked at the same speed as Tokyo with small differences like the Akita sisters.

It's the same in Germany. We all learn Standard High German in school, otherwise it would be quite difficult to communicate within Germany in some regions (especially in the far north and far south of Germany). Unfortunately, this has the effect of discouraging younger people from speaking dialects as they mostly speak High German with all their peers. I think dialects are beautiful! It's so nice to see young Japanese people trying to speak their dialect and encouraging others to be proud of their regional heritage.

Would Korone's accent be from Akita? She always changes the K for a G. I wonder. I love how she speaks. It would be interesting if you made a video of vtubers way of talking.

I find it interesting that Japan has quite a few variation in dialects despite being a fairly small country. The United States is nearly 26 times bigger in land mass, but the English spoken is relatively the same throughout the entire country, save for a few difference in accents.

At first I assumed it's like an accent like in English, southern, new yorkan and stuff. But this is more complex

Hmm... For some reason, I kinda notice these speech patterns in the anime. I thought they're just different words. Now I understand they're just from a different dialects.

Hello Yuta, i’ve been so intrigued and fell in love with Japanese culture and therefore i want to learn and create conversations in Japanese but i just don’t know where to start. I’ve been told to learn Katakana and Hiragana but i don’t know how I should? There is so much, i feel like giving up already when i haven’t even started but i don’t want to lose on something so easily. Could you please give me advice? Thank you 🙏

When dialects conflict, what is the polite way to ask for clarification?
I had no idea they were different enough for Japanese speakers to struggle with them as well.

Sometimes in anime there are some characters that speak with a north accent. And I also could notice that sonorisation of voiceless consonats. I could notice even more when I watched Mashiro no Oto. It was hard to adapt my ears to the new intonation and pitch pattern, the worst part was to hear new ending particles :s

I also noticed the northern accent (Aomori? to be specific) from Mashiro no Oto! The sonorisation was really prominent in that anime.

@@tenkotatsu For example, when Umeko, Setsu's mother, says "atashi" she pronounces "adashi" 😂

It almost the same here. But its more accent. I'm from Michigan. But I find when I travel to other states I have to talk a lot slower for people to understand me.

As a Westerner and native English speaker, i never really found various Japanese dialects to be difficult to pick up or understand. As long as the topic was about something I could follow in standard Japanese, most of the time a dialectical difference wouldn't throw me off. I found it to be really fun actually. And so don't take offense but I think the reason Japanese people have trouble learning English, or even understanding different Japanese dialects, is because culturally Japan is quite strict and ridged in many aspects (not all of course) and this even spills over into language as well.

I think for the most part if you know the rule of voiced consonants it's a little easier to understand, but I started getting lost when they talked faster and my brain didn't have time to think about it.
It sounds more 'inaka' though, if that makes sense.
