    Awesome video and great advice. Very few people know how to hunt squirrels. Everyone tries hunting squirrels by foot and the squirrels end up hiding in the trees when scared. You need to sit and blend in with a tree until they come out. There’s a reason you always see more squirrels while deer hunting and not when squirrel hunting.

    A scoped .22 and sitting quietly is by far the best way to take squirrels. I take more squirrels with my pellets rifles than most people take with shotguns. The real advantage of using a rifle is clean headshots with no busted up squirrels full of shot. I gave up shotgunning squirrels and rabbits 20 years ago.

      I might have to agree with you. I've still hunted all my life and I've hunted with squirrel dogs a lot. But in my older age ive switched techniques. I now squirrel hunt out of a ground blind and some mornings I'll almost reach my daily limit. Just shoot'm and leave them lay. Gather them all up when I get ready to call it quits for the day.

    I believe as a deer (and big time squirrel) hunter the reason that you see squirrel while deer hunting is because you are well aware that the best time to hunt deer is at dawn & dust and you make sure to be in the woods at those times, but if you think about it that is also the best time to hunt squirrels even though you just go when you have the time to get out at any time of the day?....who wants to get up at 5 am to go squirrel hunting?

    • @MNMadeAdventures
      @MNMadeAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True, I think also because you are stationary for a longer period of time. I think most of us squirrel hunters eventually give up on a certain area if we don’t see anything within 15-20 mins and move on but when we’re in a stand and can’t move, we can be there for a couple hours or so and that is plenty of time for squirrels to show up.

    The only situation I can see myself hunting squirrels with a shotgun is if I have kids in the future and want to take them out hunting. For kids starting out, I think it is very important to be successful or they will lose interest. Otherwise, since I started squirrel hunting a few years ago, I have always been using my 17HMR, which may even be slightly over kill for squirrel, but it sure is a hell of a lot of fun! I bought a 22LR earlier this year specifically for squirrel hunting. Looking forward to taking it out for the first time in a couple weeks.

    • @MNMadeAdventures
      @MNMadeAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think you will have a great time with the .22. I also think the 17hmr is a bit much for squirrels but it is super accurate! Yes, shotguns are best for beginners I think because some of them do need success to stay interested.

      @@MNMadeAdventures Yeah, for sure it's going to be a blast (no pun intended). Unfortunately, I'm stuck here at the university for another 9 days so can't go hunting til I get done here. Also, just try to take head shots if using a 17. Although it doesn't destroy very much meat most of the time anyway as long as you don't hit too much bone.

    I really enjoy using my pellet guns. A good spring gun will kill any squirrel, within a certain range and depending on your accuracy. A better option, but one that maybe not everyone has access to, is a PCP (pre charged pneumatic) pellet gun. These things can shoot with nearly as much FPE as a .22. I need to toss a can on mine to really quiet it down but I do love shooting it. I'll be doing shotgun this year on state property and pellet gun on private! Great video and good luck hunting!

      I know I’m really late to the party but my Grandmother would pressure cook them squirrel for 30 min. Then you remove them and rinse under cold water to re firm them up they will be pretty tender. After they re firm up you season them with salt pepper dip in egg or buttermilk role them in corn meal and flower 50/50 mix and fry in REAL butter! It will be the best squirrel you’ll ever eat. The pressure cooking is the key to making them actually tender! Good hunting!

    Thanks for the tips. Don’t forget that you can find their nests. Blasting the nest is the best use for the shotgun and you’ll get quite a few kills with that method.

      Be mindful that shooting squirrels in their nests often ends up with a wounded or dead, unrecoverable squirrel. This is supposed to be sport hunting... make it sporting by shooting at squirrels, not nests.

    • @MNMadeAdventures
      @MNMadeAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there, there’s a bunch of public land here in MN but I’ll be honest, there is also a lot of hunting pressure. You can go to the MN DNR website and look for Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). Some areas are better than others obviously and the further away from the easy to access areas, the better off you are. Also depends on how far you are willing to drive. I personally Hunt about 1.5-2 hrs away in the southeast part of the state but there are many areas in the metro area such as the Carlos Avery WMA that can be fun on the opener.

    Is it efficient to bring a .22 and a 20 gauge hunting so you can get far shots and ease close up shots ?

    • @Noobish_Camper55
      @Noobish_Camper55 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't mind carrying the extra weight and having 2 guns to snag on brush. 20g is the best all around since you aren't taking long shots in the woods.

    • @MNMadeAdventures
      @MNMadeAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get where you’re coming from. But it’s kind of like should we be hunting deer with shotguns or rifles? Should it just be one or the other or is it preference? I don’t have the answer either. As long as we can keep our kids outdoors instead of glued to their phones and rooms, I think they can use what would help them have a successful hunt and then move them up to a .22 when they get more proficient.

    • @mikecase9365
      @mikecase9365 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MNMadeAdventures Fair enough but to me the real issue is that seems atleast in pa they are concerned about getting kids to hunt. So they make it easier. Like the fact they made cross bows legal. Use to be you had to have a medical reason for the use. Then someone said it's easier for kids so poof legal. Now a kid doesnt have to practice just walks in during archery and pulls a trigger and buck is down. Just seems the heart of hunting is being tossed aside for easy. I personally think this will be the issue. A million hunters all versed in easy not right.

    • @garrettfobes1091
      @garrettfobes1091 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In some cases, like deer and maybe squirrels, I totally get your point. But rifle bullets travel way faster and longer than a shotgun, and when a duck or something is flying, then you have to use a shotgun, because it is actually a lot safer to use a shotgun when bird hunting because shotgun pellets only travel like 600 yards and bullets are going to go waaaay farther than a shotgun. For turkeys, maybe a rifle but it is safer to shoot flying turkeys and things with a shotgun. Sometimes, shotguns are overkill, but maybe limit them to bird hunting. I think shotguns are important to hunt birds.
