When I talked to my father about this and mentioned the pow situation, he said the old guys probably had sons fighting and were probably receiving letters about them dying.
Oh, that's something many people probably haven't even thought about, including myself. That would just make them want to fight that more aggressively.
They have spoken about it in interviews. Early on when they arrived in the Pacific the Japanese captured one of their patrols. The men had to stay in their positions listening to the Japanese torturing their guys. The following day when they moved out, they discovered the mutilated corpses. The Japanese had chopped their dicks off and put them in their mouths. From then on, the standing order was to not take prisoners. Pretty much the only person to violate that order was Desmond Doss. He would treat any wounded man he found.

Which is funny, because Germany dragged Italy into the war in a similar fashion since they had a similar treaty. And when Germany invaded Poland, Italy was obligated to join the fight.
Not quite. Japan engaged in an offensive war and the pact with Germany I’m pretty sure didn’t bind it to join an offensive war (Japan didn’t join in the invasion of the Soviet Union). It’s more likely Germany was looking at lend lease, and just viewed the declaration of war as a legal confirmation of a war that already existed.

Yeah, a lot of the "true story" style military movies are downplayed, specifically because the stuff that's worth making a movie over is usually a little too over the top to be accepted by the general public. My Grandpa was on a ship in WW2, and Korea, but he did have to make amphibious landings a time or two, and while he almost never talked about his time in service, he did tell me a few stories when I was around... 12 or so, so this is memory from over 20 years ago. Still, he would have stood by that "if they don't stink, stick 'em" statement. He was in the later waves, so he was cleanup, meaning he went around making sure there weren't survivors. He told me he saw a guy who had been shot in the head, literally could see his brain, and so he didn't bother sticking him. That guy got up, and fired at his buddy next to him, luckily he missed. But after that, he said he stuck all the bodies.

To be fair to the Germans, we are viewing this with the benefit of hindsight. For the Germans, a large part of why their attack on Russia in 1941 was halted was Stalin moving a bunch of specially trained Siberian Divisions to halt the Germans outside of Moscow. If the Japanese declared war on the Soviets, Stalin would have to move those troops back to Siberia to defend against Japan. Hitler was likely assuming that we would focus our attention on Japan, the country that attacked us, instead of them first as well. Both assumptions he made ended up being false.

Precisely. Germany was already at war with the USA, just not openly prior to Pearl Harbor. At thisnpoint declaration of war is but a formality: america would go in regardless
The whole germany declared war on america thing was specifically because they had just established a treaty i believe with their allies(one of which was japan) so the declaration of war against japan kinda tied germanies hands. Granted they couldve broken it, but then risk japan turning on them

I'm already heavily westernized but these fuckin stories make me appreciate the US armed forces even more than I already do. No hate to my own country's armed forces, but maybe if I had learned more about them in school, then I'd appreciate them more.
Oh, I recently heard a rumor about why the 77th took so few prisoners. It's rumor, so take it AS a grain of salt (salt makes stuff taste better, why on earth would you take it WITH a grain of salt; taking it AS means it's worthless, taking it WITH means it has some amount of value). Apparently, either during their time in the Mariana Islands, or Leyte, one of their security patrols was caught one night by Japanese soldiers. And these particular men had their... thing cut off and placed in their mouth to be found later. And as a result of this, the entire Infantry Division decided to treat the Japanese about as well as the Japanese treated their prisoners but the 77th did it just a bit faster. Instead of starving them, they just shot them all... everyone gets shot, period.
Germany and Japan signed the Tripartite Treaty. So when the U.S. officially declared war against Japan, Germany backed them like they were suppose to and declared war on the U.S. mustache man knew it was a terrible idea but they had to honor the treaty.
From my understanding, Germany was contractually obligated to declare war on America by the treaty they had between all of the Axis powers. You know, "An attack on one, is an attack on all" or something like that. Also, from what I've heard, Hit,er was doing everything he could, including begging, to stop Japan from launching Pearl Harbor because he knew that the Axis couldn't take the industrial might of the US
There’s a clip from the Unsubscribe podcast you should check out. Nick was actually contacted by someone who was the son of a former 77th member who had done most of the research and wanted to tell the story of his father and the men he fought with. It’s definitely worth watching even if you don’t make it a reaction video. Just goes to show the impact of his videos and what he’s trying to do.
Just for clarification, Hitler instated a design share program and information share program, at the time share of information and equipment was also considered support and an act of war by the targeted party anyways. Due to this Hitler who said "Dont attack America" was forced to declare war before Germany had more justifications against them, they also were hoping Mexico would tag in as well. Russia would have had to slog the battle for WW2 out another 5 years roughly because they didn't have vehicles after Germany pushed there shit in all the way to Stalingrad. By this time several soldiers who were smart relocated machine equipment to the Russian side of the river and high command converted barns into makeshift workshops and basically into dual leighbor camps for planes and small chassis parts. America at this point offloaded enough Steel, Explosives and trucks that 40% of there production in this time-frame was American material, by the mid of the following year 80% of there Supply chain was American supplied and keep in mind we still got another year when Russia was finally on the roll and had Most of there tooling back and had managed to get production of the majority of the supplies they received for 2 years and everything went well in there side so much so that T-34 chassi design was able to improve to the point where welds were not hyper dogshit and workman quality jumped a fuck ton, the top 3 people in the Russian army at the time had nothing but compliments to the Americans for the supplies and there quality of goods. Russia indeed could have won without our aid, but there population may not have held out and it would have been a fight to "Wait for the West to win to end it", don't forget America was in two fronts on separate battle-zones and still supplying herself, allies, and helping to aid countries in rebuilding as much as she could (Even focused on repairing Japan and Germany a ton after they surrendered), and Russia was in fact not entirely at friends with the Americans in 1939 - 1940 (finish war took a toll on the ego and Stalin actually started looking at America with interest), they considered themselves self efficient till 1942 when they realized something was up and Germany was amassing at the border. Germany had maps from WW1 marking some fuel depot positions but due to missed math they drove past the fuel depot in WW2, If Germany had the fuel they probably world have taken Stalingrad entirely and had enough tank support to hold that line. Russia forced by Germany to join the Allies to receive better aid and force America and Britain to open up a Front-line and push on the West (France). Technically they didn't join the allies officially till the signing of Germany in 1945, even then they only posted threats and hate cause America and Britian displayed use-able technology unlike the false bluffs the Russians were spouting. Lot of people didn't even know that during the battle of Kursk Romania and Italy had a small piece of the line and because they used Mountain infantry in the snow they were used to horrible winter conditions, they in fact gained better terrain, and better supply systems in the snow so they actually 100% halted the advance of the Russian onslaught, they only retreated once the German lines hit there supply line as the German front-line. The Italian and Romanian troops started shitting on the Russian tanks and infantry. Its not covered except they reference Italian tanks as they are the "Yellow Devil Tanks". They dont like the fact that Italian weapons put up good work on them.
36:30 The biggest target for the kamikaze boats would have to have been the troop transports. The Japanese leadership wanted to bleed the Allied troops dry at Okinawa and hopefully turn US public against the war with massive casualties.
I absolutely hate the Hacksaw Ridge movie, I went to see it and it triggered my PTSD. I had to leave because of all the memories of my time in Iraq on '03. I finally saw the movie all the way through. Love the movie, still get choked up
Something that was missed by yourself @Old Man Reacts and also by the FTE is that the amphibious landing at Leyte is on December 7th, 1944 exactly 3 years to the day that Pearl Harbor was attacked. Was it purposely set up that way? I don't know but I do find it rather ironic that that happened on that day. Something to think about though.
Here's how that conversation probably went for Germany to decide to poke the already pissed off giant. Japan : Hey Hitler buddy just thought we would let you know we just sunk a bunch of America's boats. Hitler : Nein , Nein, Nein, What the hell where you thinking ? Japan : So we might need your help to keep the rest of their navy on the other side of the world maybe? Hitler : Ah fine you already poked that giant we mind as well try to help keep it from instantly killing you for that. Hey America We Are Declaring War on you to help out our friend. America: (Turns head ) Oh really with a smile. Ok you didn't touch the boats but if you want it you can get some too. The rest of the German military starts planing on how to kill Hitler because this is that level of stupid.
To be fair, Hitler convinced Japan yo attack America, Hitler wanted to go after America, but didnt have a way to do it. So in order to split America's focus, Hitler declared War in order to force America to split Americas firces, make them weaker, make it easier to cinquor. Noone expected America to turn into a hornet's nest with several dozen main characters that just dominated the Pacific theater. America had so many willing fighters, America could easly fight on both fronts
Very few people truly realized just how committed and just how much America was really gonna be ble to expand though. The USSR lend lease program wasn't actually considered a really impressive feat primarily because literally everyone else was at a complete war time economy at that point, even though obviously hindsight is 20/20. There was and simply hasn't been a nation that was so able to completely switch from isolation/protectionist to imperialist so quickly before or since.
in reality, it's silly but Germany declared war to the USA because they were hoping that Japan will then declare war to the USSR, but plot twist, they didn't

He had Germany had to declare war against us because he was an ally with Japan. That's why you declared war on us. OK, he was a little stupid, but that's the reason why it's because. He was an ally with japan
Why did you get so upset that Hitler (a mentally insane drug addict) declared war on us almost 60 years after we defeated them. Yes ,the Soviet Union and the UK (both of which were heavily supplied by us) would have eventually, possibly defeated them (although, with the weapon advancements that Germany was on the verge of might have brought about a different outcome). I believe that our help may very well have been the deciding factor.
I know you're not going to take this advice but you look like you're looking over your shoulder, your image is not balanced. Put the screen in front of you. More people will watch your stories for longer. Always square your shoulders towards the in-screen pic. OK? Done.

without: 1 payment 2 expecting to get them back... that does not seem like neutrality at work to me chief
also if they already decide to invest so much in you loosing, I do not think sending them a post card will change them mind about entering in formaly once they have enough divisions. At thisnpoint declaration of war is but a formality: america would go in regardless

America
(notices all the motorcycles) ...do you live near sturgis or something? 🤣
The whole germany declared war on america thing was specifically because they had just established a treaty i believe with their allies(one of which was japan) so the declaration of war against japan kinda tied germanies hands. Granted they couldve broken it, but then risk japan turning on them
I'm Filipino. Ive learned more about WW2 from TFE's stories about this absolute badasses than I learned from school. I'm already heavily westernized but these fuckin stories make me appreciate the US armed forces even more than I already do. No hate to my own country's armed forces, but maybe if I had learned more about them in school, then I'd appreciate them more.
You learn about the Ghost of Bataan yet? That and Hunter's ROTC attacking Los Banos made me appreciate YOUR armed forces!
My oldest in my BMT flight was a 40 year old Chinese foreigner coming for American citizenship 😅
Enjoyed the reaction.

Love the movie, still get choked up
TALK ABOUT MVPs!
I am in AIT rn at fort LeonardWood and I'm with a guy who is 43
To be fair, Hitler convinced Japan yo attack America, Hitler wanted to go after America, but didnt have a way to do it. So in order to split America's focus, Hitler declared War in order to force America to split Americas firces, make them weaker, make it easier to cinquor. Noone expected America to turn into a hornet's nest with several dozen main characters that just dominated the Pacific theater. America had so many willing fighters, America could easly fight on both fronts
i always assumed japan pressured Germany to declare war on america
Very few people truly realized just how committed and just how much America was really gonna be ble to expand though. The USSR lend lease program wasn't actually considered a really impressive feat primarily because literally everyone else was at a complete war time economy at that point, even though obviously hindsight is 20/20.
There was and simply hasn't been a nation that was so able to completely switch from isolation/protectionist to imperialist so quickly before or since.
Do you have a biker weekend coming up?
Didn't Germany and Japan have an alliance? So when the US declared war on Japan, Germany had to declare war on the US, right?
11 to 1 odds stupidly impressive
Germany was forced to declare war on the US due to their treaty with Japan.
That treaty was defensive I think so it didn't obligate them to join if Japan was the aggressor
@trevdestroyer8209 Yes and no. Yes, it was defensive in nature, but if Germany did not back Japan up, they would have lost all support from them.
Will we ever see you react to the Weaver Option like you mentioned in the all guardsman party?

9:27 No, no they wouldn't have.
Y'all know the US cranked out ~64k sherman tanks during the war right?
in reality, it's silly but Germany declared war to the USA because they were hoping that Japan will then declare war to the USSR, but plot twist, they didn't
No incentive? Lend/Lease.
Old man, you need to start liftin some weights again. Getting up in the morning will become so much better again. This is comming from a old man myself aswell. Liked the reaaction. Have a nive day.
He had Germany had to declare war against us because he was an ally with Japan.
That's why you declared war on us. OK, he was a little stupid, but that's the reason why it's because. He was an ally with japan
Americans didn't want to get involved, the government couldn't due to the Neutrality Act.
Germany declared war with the US because they were allied with Japan
OK? Done.
Actually the fact I'm broadcasting from this room was always a stop gap measure. I don't like my current setup. In a few months I'm going to overhaul it completely, I'll be in a different room then.
Well let's be real, Russia won WW2, other countries helped! 😂
Driving Fords.
You realize without Lend Lease and the British and American operations in Africa, Italy, and Normandy, the Russians would've lost, right?
Sure, by using human wave tactics, just as they still do, the number of dead of all countries who fought in WW2 paints a picture of it (at least partially), but if it helps you sleep at night, sure, but it was a team effort
Yeah, only the US and Britain gave them most of the stuff they needed to help fix their logistics.
