1951 Matchless G3lS 350cc at Andy Tiernans

Mine is a 52 Matchless with the red tank badge, in my shed after my Dad never got round to restoring it in his retirement,

my dad had one and now today my brother just picked one up almost the same aprt from the seat.
if anyone reads this how does the advance and retard thing work.
did get it started with it on just a little but wondering if you need to set it different ever, or while riding
