This cane has been an everyday option for me for a little while, and I decided to talk about it, then put it through the Redwolf treatment. Hope y'all enjoy.
its a sword cane not a machete and baseball bat for bushwhacking, at most you might have to fight off a group of ppl or a pack of dogs and for that purpose its more than enough
I get the argument. I have had, and still do, a lot of blades that can do all the above. More importantly to me, now we all have a better idea of how far it can be pushed. I like knowing that. Nearly been killed a few times when these kind of things did not live up to the marketing.
@@Redwolfblog Sorry...but NO sword is made to be hacking/chopping wood. Tiny branches should be okay, but not larger stuff. Axes can do it all, yes, and maybe short edged weapons like barongs (if they have thicker blades) on very small-diameter trees (using bush-craft to build a survival shelter, for one example), but not swords. At most, swords should be able to handle bamboo: The Japanese test their katanas using bamboo, but never wood (trees). I have 2 of these Cold Steel canes...would NEVER try to chop wood...to me, that's just abuse. My edged weapons (the 2 canes, assorted swords like my Russian shashka, barong, kampilan, etc.) are for "meat" only -- just like the knife I carry as a backup to my EDC firearm. I don't even use the (VERY sharp) knife to open envelopes/packages -- it's meat only! ;-) If I need to chop wood, an axe or a Japanese "Silky" saw (I have 3 sizes) would be my choices (don't use chainsaws!), but never a sword. -- BR
@@billredding2000 Even historically, there are big arguments between yours and my side of the debate. My experience hitting stuff, like steel shields, blocking a very diverse range of weapons...if I am going to carry a blade, I have to KNOW that it can maintain itself against that degree of "abuse". I think your way of approaching the issue is probably very realistic, and it is very smart, but my personal experience is that I need something that can handle more than "just meat", especially in blocking. I have found that the wood chopping is a fairly good stand in for the level of use that I have put swords through in the past...and it is a lot safer than rigging up swinging items to block or cutting on more realistic targets. In a Japanese context, I would be a guy looking for a "5 Body Blade" and not a bamboo practice cutter. if you don't mind my asking, do you have a good recommendation for a shashka or kampilan? I am in the market for an example of both.
It is a reasonable expectation to need to defend against clubs, batons, and to know how well it holds up to hitting hard targets. It is closer to my default testing for swords than anything else.

@@Redwolfblog Agreed but how many swords are actually made to do just that and not chip , break or bend ? And there are many but the size and weight would not make them effective in a sword cane role . Doubtful even the Japanese style shirasaya blades could withstand that punishment . These are meant as a concealable self defense weapon not a broad sword the same as a British Fairbairn-Sykes dagger or the V-44 dagger were made to stab not to be a general all purpose knife like the Kabar . And many a tip were broken when hitting bone or metal on the bodies of the German soldiers .
Appreciate you sharing this experience and very down to earth video,and I'm surprised it didn't hold up to the testing you pit it through and the Aluminum Keeper bent way easier than i expected. Thanks because you didn't abuse it at all. 😊
Ok people are not wearing armor. A sharp stainless edge works fine and will back off any would-be attacker. Would we prefer a better piece of steel? Yep, sure would and using this as a template is easy enough to make.
Only problem with those Cold Steel drop forged knives is since the handle is not covered it will transfer the heat or the cold to your hand . Love the knives just wish they made a provision for a covered handle .
I have an old sword cane my mom bought me years ago at a flea market. Pakistani steel and a heavy tube. I love it and it's damn near bomb proof. CS probably could make this one to that level, but would I wanna pay the price they'd ask? Probably not. Thanks for sharing brother!
Great video! Do you know how this compares to the night watchman heavy duty sword cane? That one is made from 1060, but there's not a lot of information on it.

I mean, the whole reason Bowies are popular is Jim Bowie killed a man who stabbed him with a sword cane. Reach only matters if that threat of injury keeps the opponent at distance...I've not sure. I guess that the cane man would have an advantage IF he used both the blade and the stick, but a Bowie guy running up into your space makes the longer reach a detriment instead of a perk.
@@Redwolfblog agree. The accounts of the Sandbar Fight I've read indicated Norris Wright moved in to finish Bowie who'd struggled to a sitting position. Apparently Wright got too close and Bowie pulled him down and killed him. So, I'd have to say, you are right, had he used the reach of the sword, he might've won the fight.
Is that cold steel or a clone? I have two of those, and one has a better paint job and a better edge to the blade, and mirror polished and my other one is exactly what you have. From two different websites. Got them years apart and I'm just wandering if I (and you) got a clone or if cold steel got lazy maybe?
Especially since they sold to Gerber, the prices went up and the quality is all over the place. Rather sad, hoping to dip my toe back in and try some of the newer ones soon.
I saw a video of Lynn Thompson cut a hog in half with one stroke. It was still hanging by a little strip of skin , maybe get ahold of cold steel and se if they will sell you a new sheaf
It is a lot easier to cut a handing hog than you might think. One of the reasons I do the testing the way I do, is, in my experience, you are likely to both strike harder long bones and meet such things as shields, batons, bats, and other hard objects. I want to know I can rely on the tool. Most anything will work against a static target that is neither attacks nor defending itself. The mark of a weapon is being able to stand up to those other rigors.

I have been in some situations that this level of survivability would not have served...nothing supper ominous, as that might sound, but I think that, largely, your point would stand. Most "weapons" are carried often and used little. My experience drives my testing, and at least everyone who watches it will have some idea where the...boundaries of use, shall we say, are. I hate marketing that makes you think you will get a lightsaber for $120, when in reality you have a 1 shot tool that will only stand up to moderate use, which is why I do reviews when I can. I would have saved thousands of dollars on broken blades if I had found sources hitting things the way I do. Which is probably why I can't get a sponsored video! Haha.

Not in my hands. I do these tests to see how well they hold up to the use they are marketed for. I am a user, not a collector, and I learned stuff from the testing.
I would argue it was not an excellent sword, but I have broken so many blades I like to make sure I'm getting my moneys worth. There are blades that easily survive my testing, and I recommend those. Gotta break a few on camera to stay honest.
@Redwolfblog Cold Steel never marketed these as machetes or axes. This is the problem I have with a lot of these torture test channels the product was never intended for use as a weed whacker or a hatchet. Try it on rolled mats or pig carcasses for better feedback with usable information.

Weapons are for flesh, agricultural tools are for vegetation. This is neither a machete nor an axe. It's a sword, not a shovel.

My experience with United Cutlery is to stay away from them and save your money.
A layer of bedliner coating on the shaft is much more durable.

Cold steel's quality has definitely diminished from what it used to be. But fakes are rampant too...
