      I’ve never seen a “SPOTTER” stand 3 feet away from the lift. Hell yeah it was the spotter fault. He didn’t ask him to stand and watch.

      That was objectively an atrocious spot. He had his hands in his pockets while the guy was clearly struggling. You’re supposed to have your hands at the ready during the entire spot and be standing close to the weight. He waited until the guy was half a second from dropping it on his neck and then promptly flipped it over, dumping the weight.
      But, that was also classic ego lifting at the same time

      ​@soberserotonin1850 Exactly this. He jumped in only a half second late, but from 4 times further away. Now, sometimes we don't know the whole story. Ego lifting kid may have demanded he go further away, I've even had that happen to me and I'm not a close spotter.

    I learned this lesson early with a single mistake, and that was thinking (and eventually self-proving) I was not ready at all to squat a 245 when I had only been training just over a month and couldn't stand back up. Lift in your lane, folks.

      But on that coin, don't be afraid to push forward when you become stronger. Start with a stone, then lift two stones, then lift a basket of stones, then a boulder, and on it goes.

      That was objectively an atrocious spot, but it was also ego lifting. More than one thing can be true. That was one of the worst spots I’ve ever seen lol had his hands in his pockets instead of hovering above the bar, waiting to help. Especially with a clear attempt at a 1-rep personal record (PR), the spotter should lightly guide the bar with his hands the entire time.

      That was objectively an atrocious spot. You should watch professionals or just competent lifters spot each other. Especially for a clear attempt at a 1-rep personal record (PR), one should be guiding the bar with one’s hands the entire time, not standing a few feet back with hands in pockets lol

    It's ridiculous that people seem to only do max lifts for prs or pbs. Quite frankly, you should always work to increase your weights by doing sets of lower weights until you hit your max weight. Just doing 1 max lift frequently is going to slow you down as well as potentially harm you. People are just not educated or informed enough about weightlifting.

    Obviously, the guy blaming the spotter took on too much weight. However, if you're spotting for someone, make sure you're standing right behind the bench and make sure the bar won't fall down in the press attempt. Also, make sure you're pulling up the weight like a deadlift, if it does. Don't try and do a biceps curl with the bar, for Chrissakes. If you don't know how to spot, then don't spot, so the guy doing the bench press knows he's on his own, before he's gonna bench press.

    He can't blame the spotter for his failed lift. However spotters are supposed to be their to make it safe. I'd recommend TWO spotters next time for such a weight (ie a weight a spotter can't handle comfortably if he himself were training), and for them to stand either end of the bar. And also communicate- let it be known the point at which you want the spotters to get involved, and what you would like them to do to assist you precisely.
