Voltage drop testing a parking light/turn signal circuit

  • 2008 Dodge Charger left front Parking Light/Turn Signals not working. In this video I will show you how to properly test for a voltage drop using just an incandescent test light. We will also be repairing the circuit and reviewing a diagram to explain the back-feed condition the car was having.

      Thank you guys for helping me to fix my 2006 hummer h3, I had change 2 ignition coil clean the throttle sensor n throttle it self n didn't work. Still was misfiring until I saw your video n change the relay n work fine. Thank you again n God bless you all

    Reminds me of many years ago while I was managing the maintenance of a fleet of 18 wheelers, we had a Kenworth truck with crazy light problems. The mechanics tried everything, well almost everything, even installing a new ECM! Nothing helped. One of the guys was telling me about it over coffee and I decided to take a look. Purely by chance, I took the tail light lens off, pulled out the 1157 bulb, held it up to the light and the brake/turn filament had burned into on the end, dropped down and was contacting and welded itself to the tail/park filament. The turn signal was back feeding to the entire park light circuit. All because of a $1.50 bulb. Some of this stuff can drive you crazy and sometimes you just need a fresh set of eyes to look at a problem.

      And also to keep it simple! When I was having taillight issues on my Subaru, the first thing I did was check the bulbs. Burned out, replaced with new ones, problem solved.

      I had that exact same problem once on a car. I was going through wiring for hours looking for a dead short ... and it was in the damn bulb the entire time, lol! Live and learn!

      Proof positive that had you paid those techs a livable wage, they would have replace that bulb, instead of the computer!!

      @@roadkill5333 You might have a point there (I still shake my head) if it had occurred in the last 10-12 years but that was over 25 years ago and you took what you could get. My KW dealer at the time could not find qualified technicians at any wage! They had to shut down a whole shift due to technician shortage. We were fortunate to have two local guys who could and, most importantly, would work. I've twisted wrenches all my life and never got rich doing it. Yeah, and your three trips thru the drive through enforces the current state of today's workforce. Jump over to western truck and tractor repair's channel and listen to some of his stories about tractor dealer(stealer)ships! He's also a big ScannerDanner fan.

      About 25 years ago, THE MAN was holding me back, too!! As a matter of fact, I can blame THE MAN for not letting me go to college to learn how to make the same money as rich people. Some silly nonsense about dropping out of high school with a POINT FOUR O grade point average!! I was forced to work for minimum wage, at the skill level that I had, instead of making the same money that wealthy people made!!
      I once overheard a fast food worker complaint about the horrible working conditions, and the below average pay that she got, while leaning against a counter waiting for my order to be handed to her, so she could hand it to me, without ever looking into the bag, or stop leaning against the counter while she passed the bag with the WRONG ITEMS FOR MY ORDER, out the window!! When I handed it back to her, she had the nerve to ask me what was wrong with the order!! I told her that it was likely all complete and correct!! She asked why I was handing it back. I told her that it wasn't my order. After comparing sacks full of stuff, she handed me my order!! No "I'm sorry", no "have a good evening", it was "here it is"! As I stopped, went thru the bag, and verified the order, she asked if it was all there!! I asked if she was supposed to do that! She asked "do what"? I said verify the order, or let the customer verify whether they got what they already paid for! She just looked at me with a F you look. I wished her good luck on her quest for a raise, and drove off!! When I got home with my cold order, that was undercooked, packed into the bag like concrete blocks not food items, and haphazardly prepared without any sights on quality, I informed corporate to really consider her requests for more money!!
      I worked at a convenience store, that wouldn't pay much, couldn't keep employees, and when you did something to help ease the cost of losses to the unit, they would hold you accountable! I once caught a shoplifter, that I knew was a shoplifter, I just couldn't prove what he was doing!! I finally caught him, recovered the merchandise, and sent him on his way, WITHOUT CALLING THE COPS!! I was admonished for disrupting business, and falsely accusing a customer of theft, without a police report! (I followed him outside, removed about five items that he hadn't paid for, and used the "you forgot your receipt" for $2 worth of merchandise, to get out there, and NOTICE THE STUFF IN HIS POCKETS!)I also had a gas drive off caught, because several cops were positioned close by, and noticed the commotion, and went and got the guy!! They got their $20 in gas back, I went to court on my own time, and he was not even talked to sternly by the judge, and the mgr refused to ban him from coming back!! We were admonished for having drive offs, and had to attend classes on drive off prevention, theft prevention, and the video tapes were constantly reviewed to see that we were paying attention!! There was no video of customers, in any areas of the store!! I even almost experienced a robbery once, and a restaurant down the street ended up getting it, about 15 mins later. They pulled the tapes to get the descriptions, and pictures, the cameras weren't trained on the customers, only the employees, in non customer areas!! I quit that job, when they wanted to run the store on 24hrs with me and a manager! We lost four employees in a month, and the store refused to back off on the 24hr times!! It was hard enough with three people. But I quit when they wouldn't stop 24hr service with just two of us!! 10hrs a day, for two weeks straight, 7days a week, and they wanted me to run more than 12-13 for God only knows how much longer! 24hrs wasn't worth the time. Barely any sales after BEER THIRTY!
      On the other hand, I had a lawyer, handling my disability case, call me a year and a half after I employed them, to talk to me for the first time 26 days before my court hearings, to inform me that I had no case because my medical records didn't exist, and I had no proof!! He explained that he was taking a separate course of action (which is exactly what I had been ready for, and had already supplied all of the pertinent information for, which was originally denied) from what I was expecting!! The following week, after I called the dr to get my records, went and picked up the records, took them home and made copies of them, and then took them to the lawyers office, myself, where they promptly refused to accept my medical records because they didn't need them for the case for which they had prepared, which was because they didn't have my medical records to prove my case!! Of course, when it came time to get paid, they wanted all of the premium price for all of the generic work, while they promoted their excellent work records on tv commercials!! I didn't get paid as much, but they got their money, and for almost no work!!
      My point is you get what they want you to pay for, but what they want to give you in return!! And while giving substandard service, at a premium price, complaining that they don't get enough for what they do! That's true with fry guys, auto techs, store clerk, and attorneys, alike!! And they all claim it's because they don't make enough money afterwards, but offer you the moon beforehand!!

    Paul, a good demonstration of why we cant find Technicians! Its unreal How many guys cant understand the simplicity of this. I wish when I SHOW PEOPLE simply electronics like this the majority wouldnt just stare at me like a dead fish!Keep on Teaching my friend and hopefully you will reach that Audience in the Masses!

      have them use PHET DC virtual circuit online its a free website where you build simple circuits like this and test with virtual multi meter and takes just a few seconds to get started.its been the best learning tool for me.

    Amazing. First time i encountered case like this on my sister Mercedes. I spend couple hours on that, couldn't wrap my mind around it. One Head Light didn't work and hight beems was dimmed. I found problem accidentally, was bad ground inside the plug. Bad connection on pin. Second time soon after i encountered same case on my neighbor car. lights were dim and i knew exactly what was then. It happened 2 years after i singed up with Paul. So my point is for new guys here. Keep on trying. I often do stuff like this for free especially for friends and family just to get the experience. I also going through Pauls classes again. And its pretty amazing how much more you learn going through classes with few years of experience. It just finalizing everything. And i spend at least 1 hour a day watching other diagnosticians too. So past at least a year i have 100% accuracy in trouble shooting. Thank you so much Paul for this exciting journey.

    Starting more than 3 decades ago. One thing I learned every time I get into a new project. Clean every single Ground my eyes and hands can find (a diagram helps a lot...). That means that from old crappy VW Beettles older than myself, to way more recent cars and motorbikes.
    I tend to have extremely reliable vehicles, in what electrical is concerned. Never mind the fact that some had been, literally, saved from the scrap yard! ;-)
    With that said. Rotary tool, Dremel type, equipped with a decent wire brush. It's an invaluable ally to make short work of corroded contacts/terminals.
    30~45 minutes for a car project will return years of extremely reliable work. Yes, it's a good trade, totally worth investment of time. ;-)

    Man I just wanna say thank you thank you thank you thank you for your time I know I said thank you a lot but thank you! I currently drive a 21-year-old service van it would not run Well. I recently watched one of your videos about Chevrolet in that particular year needing 50 psi fuel pressure to open the injectors spider injectors that is. did a fuel pressure check after two mechanics told me it was junk. the thing is running like a beast. dude you’re the best thank you keep up the good work!     Great video Danner. The other day, I had a a Ford Taurus where when you turned on the headlights, the right one was out, but the washer motor started spraying the windshield. Turns out the guy changed his bulb, but forgot to tighten the ground you had to move out of the way to get to it. Bad grounds can cause some crazy symptoms.

    That's an extremely common issue on Chrysler. A bundle of grounds on 1 lug, but eventually they all fail, so best to fix them all at once.

    Thanks, Paul. I always appreciate the explanation of the theory, such as you did at the end. One favour, please: whenever you connect a test light, please be sure to emphasise what the alligator clip at other end is connected to ie power or ground. When you don’t emphasise it, I sometimes miss out on the information because I’m trying to work out where it must be connected to in order to react as it does. Many thanks.

    The Dodge B350 Vans 1987, 88, and 89 were famous for that problem with the rear stop/turn/tail light back feeding into the backup lights.
    The bulb socket would loosen up losing the ground from the reflector bolted to the body.
    I wrapped bare wire strands around the stop/tail light socket, soldered and taped it in place adding a terminal to the new ground wire and sandwiching it between the reflector and body ground. Don't laugh, it worked!
    Thorough diag with your vehicle, Good Explanation also!

I have enjoyed watching your vids even though I have been in the field since 1990 because it shows me what I didn't know that I though I knew.     Wow Paul! I'm noticing your videos are getting better and better lately with more real world scenarios. I'm sure you'll have way more material at your brother's shop. Kinda what I go through at a daily basis. At my shop...I deal with many cases with these used car dealerships with similar electrical issues and the majority of times these cars come from accidents with rebuilt titles and from auctions...I always question these customers of what type of accident or damage they come from...75% of the time these problems exist due to accidents that cause wires to stretch or bad body work. It takes a lot of attention to detail when this comes up but yeah at times I do jump wires depending the circuit to save time.

      By the way you and Eric O. are starting to inspire me to teach as well...I've been going through so many cases that haven't been seen and I felt bad not to share my experiences. As for the quality of the videos lately, we cannot discount my son Caleb, he has been a game changer in my opinion. His camera work and editing are second to none. Although we both dropped the ball a little in our camera angles on this video, we both felt like they should have been better, but overall still good.

    Had another combo om my son-in-laws
    Typical circuit like you just showed us, no light in either turn or parking.
    Turned out that both bulbs were shot and the park light had a missing ground : a frayed cable.
    A real time waster ! 😋

    Remember me such as issue with my brother's car which is Avante hit a big nail cause coolant tube cutting then the car doesn't crancking and all light doesn't light just the high beam sign in the instrument cluster always on...this all due to Ground point which is contain alot of wires has been cut....

    One day when I had a bad bulb in our 2000 suburban I discovered the same side marker light flashes alternating with the signal light. When the signal light flashes "on" the marker is "off", and vice versa. I scratched my head for a while until I discovered that this is a normal pattern with that generation of Chev. Engineers were faced with the challenge of making turn signals more visible from the side, and they solved the problem by creatively running ground between the two so that both would flash in an alternating pattern. I never noticed until the bulb failed and I gave it more attention.

    I don’t have power on coils when key is cranking so I took a ground wire and hooked it to black wire at coil main and it starts but computer still acts like it’s missing . Is this has you would say drop in voltage end steals ground some where or is it a bad computer or a bad ground

    Hi Bud I’m in need of some knowledge of yours .i have a 1997 dodge Dakota 3.9 gas..about 2 months ago I started to notice it losing power and every now and then a code GEN started showing on the dash.about a month ago it shut off twice on me while coming to a stop.today it won’t stay running when engine warms up after that it shuts off quicker with every start only running for about 1-4 minutes on warm engine in ANY gear at a stop or while accelerating it would just shut off each start gets harder as engine warms.i changed out the tps and the iac and the battery as it then started needing a jump.unclogged the back cat also.please ANY suggestions would be HIGHLY appreciated!

    Great video! One question: If the current is finding a new path, why the other bolbs are not lighting? The upper corners or the left one (in the paper)

      because they are in parallel not series, so the current is being split between at least four other bulbs, maybe 6? not sure the rear light set up. If I would have unplugged the rear lights and one of the two front ones on the right side, I bet I could have made the RF outer parking light blink with the left turn signal as well. I hope this makes sense.

    was thinking to myself another problem running another wire is depending on circuit design you can trip circute monitor into thinking there's a ground where it shouldn't be and throw codes had a similar issue with adding power switch relay for additional fog lights to low hi switched circuit always sends a small current to tell if bulb burns out.
    Since adding a relay it no longer can tell if bulb goes out.
    Had a face palm moment as relay sometimes wouldn't turn off just left it be it's on my brothers truck he said no big deal but makes adding some simple lights difficult was thinking about adding a diode to solve the issue if it becomes a problem doesn't hardly happen at all usually turn lights on back off resets it quick😅

    I had one a bit stranger than that years ago. My business partner had a 1980? GMC Vandura and replaced a burnt out L/H Rear Tail Light 1157 Bulb. It worked OK, BUT if he had the brakes on for 15 seconds, the dash lights and parking lights would come on. Even weirder, if he turned on the L/H Turning Signal, after about 25 seconds, the dash lights and parking lights would ALL flash with the turning signals. Remove the new 1157 Bulb and all was OK. Installed another new 1157 Bulb, and all was OK. The problem was the High Wattage Brake Light Filament in the bulb was too close to the Parking Light Filament, and when energized, it would heat up and sag into the parking light filament or support wire, passing current into the parking light circuit. It took a few moments to figure out, I have never seen that before, and will most likely never see it again. One thing that complicates troubleshooting ground problems with Dual Filament Bulbs like these is that current can flow through the Brake/Turn Filament without lighting it because it's ground path is the low wattage filament, and that limits the current enough to NOT light the Brake/Turn side. This is especially bad with trailers which are quite often poorly wired to begin with, have a hard life, and little to no maintenance. This is a hard lesson to learn for some..... you did a great job explaining it, and hopefully, someone will "Have the light come on!" BRAVO to the 3 Amigos!

    hey paul do you ever see anyone do a voltage drop test but put the meter on MA scale and look for a drop this way called "current flow method"?i always done the traditional vd method you shown and while looking at ground points for engine swap the poster writes that switching to ma is more accurate test? is this bs?

      That method is used for parasitic drain testing only and is frustrating at best using it

    engine ground is another spot for bad grounds on a Dodge ..braided flat cable next to exhaust manifold heats up cable ,cools then corrosion sets in causing a bad ground.

      GM had that issue for years where they stuck the ground on the rear of the head next to the firewall. Thing would rot off and you would get all kinds of issues.
