    It took some time till I was able to build a strategy around the PDT rule. Didn't know about it until AFTER I had made my very first 3 trades!! I rely more heavily on over night holds now. Hedging since I'm unable to cut losses early while the market is closed.

  • @myworldonvideo8721

    The very first thing I do before even looking at stocks in the morning is look at how many day trades I have left . If I have one , then usually I make a trade. If I have none left then I just paper trade . Sometimes being under the PDT Rule is a good thing because it limits trades which can help build discipline because you have to be smarter about the trades you do make and less trades also means less potential losses .

    I have been trading for about 6 months now and pretty much every trade is slapping me in the face. Almost impossible for me to capture more than a few points. I'm trying to do top-down analysis and MTF analysis, but it doesn't work for me. I'm like, clearly I'm in the 90% losing money, so I open a demo account, do my analysis, then take the opposite of what I would normally take (I know, that sounds silly but I was desperate) and get the same result. I'm starting to feel hopeless, any advice for a struggling trader?

    Question Tim: Say I put $26k in my account. Then I buy a stock for $3k. My "Chase You Invest" says the value of my account is still $26k. At this point, the value of my account is 26k, but I only have 23k in cash.
    Am I under the PDT rule? Meaning, can I infinitely day trade?

    I am so glad you patiently and clearly explain these little intricacies of the stock world. I had the misunderstanding that it was 3 day trades a day, with NO awareness of the rolling 5 days. Tim S. keeps saying "hold overnight," so I thought if I held overnight, it wouldn't be counted a day trade. I just heard about the rolling 5 day period, today, so of course I needed to look it up to understand it better. I'm glad my co-worker corrected me, otherwise, I might have been caught & penalized with acting on wrong info.

    Hey, beginner question here.. If I buy one stock and sell a different stock in the same day does that count as a day trade? Or does it only count if it's the same stock that's bought and sold within the same day?

    • @dlove5864
      @dlove5864 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It only counts if its the same day. So if you are under 25K, you can still make more than 3 moves in a 5 day period, you just can only buy and sell the same stock in the same day 3 times. When I was under 25K I could typically scalp 3x in a week, and then swing 8-10 stocks over multi day periods in that week.

    • @DylanMorrow48

    I know this was intended to fully explain the PDT rules, but actually it didn't. I have many questions still. One of the big clarifications I would like is: if the account has over $25K in value (positions and cash), do PDT rules affect the account at all? The reason I ask is that I have a far larger account and yet recently did a large daytrade, then received a warning notice from the broker to observe PDT rules. In fact, their notice was not very clear about the specifics. I am still looking to read the exact wording of these rulings.

    Knowing that the exchange may not let me close a position after the 4th day trade is critical, and important to know. They locked my account for only 24 hours after I simply told them that I didn't know anything about the PDTR. They let me slide one time, however once you truly "do know", they will tell you that they warned you one time already, and then they will close it. You cannot go to let's say another brokerage firm, and open an account their either. The closure for 90 days follows you from brokerage to brokerage. You could always wire your funds back to your bank, and wait for the 90 days to elapse. I like your idea about choosing the cash account instead of a margin account. That's how I'm going to do it next time I go back in.

    What counts as a Day trade? Like when you buy a stock is that 1 trade? Or is it when you buy then sell the stock is that counted as 1 trade?

    Hi great video. So just To clarify. Is it just Your account that Has to be worth over $25,000? So I bought some Tesla stock and if I reach $25,000 plus market value but have not sold.
    And then Use some extra money to be doing day trading can I trade every 5 minutes if I want or do I have to wait for those funds to settle ? Before I can trade the money again. I’m talking about cash. I don’t do margin trading.

    What about the $25,000? My account was above that & I'd done a bunch of day trades. Now that it fell under due to o e of my positions being down, my account flagged & I can't day trade. If I simply add funds to bring it up over $25000 again, if it rises on it's own, am I good to day trade again as much as I want?

    This is a great video... I was watching cause it was the latest video I found on this topic. I have a question about it though - I plan on starting trading with $500 maybe a $1000 AUD $$$. What If I were too place money into an account and not even trade. Or maybe I do trade for 1 week and do 3 trades to go under the PDT rule. But then I go on holiday for 3 weeks and not trade at all. Do you have to keep trading every week OR is it only after you place that 1 trade for the 1st week etc
    Thanks in advance and subbed.
