I've been collecting cardboard for the majority of the past 2 decades. What I wish I knew when I went back to Pokemon was that you're not alone in this hobby anymore. Try to meet people with common interest in the hobbies for a variety of things: restocks, trades, play some games, etc. Also, discord and twitter is another avenue that makes this easier.

I’ve learned several things about collecting cards since I started back in 1999. The most important thing I’ve learned, besides not falling for FOMO, is to always buy from people and places that you know you can trust. You also need to know how to differentiate between real cards and fakes because fakes are practically worthless and you don’t want to lose thousands of dollars buying “real” cards that turn out to be fake
buying/investing in English pokemon instead of Japanese pokemon card. I wish I knew this before I started collecting
I collect mostly anything Gen 1 that’s where my heart is at . Cards plushies funko you name it !! I don’t waste my time on master sets because there’s toooo many cards in a set now a days .

I’ve come in and out of collecting so many times through the years and I always seem to get rid of my collection and I wish I could’ve done it differently
having a goal is a great tip, sadly i am a master set kind of guy so ill be busy for a while. i have finished a couple since i have been back in the hobby, but Evolving skies is probably going to be one i hunt for for a while. Keep up the good work doc
When I first got back in the hobby I found Rev's channel and loved it! It took me a couple of weeks to realize that the prices he would talk about when he was oopening vintage packs were all psa 10 and 9 prices. I also had to learn that the market was ridiculously inflated at that time. So it wasn't the right time to look at any prices to determine what a collection was going to be worth in the future.

In the front of my Pokédex binder is a page with cards of surprisingly low cash value This is my Happy Page- it holds the cards of the Pokémon who make me happy. That would be Psyduck, Spheal, Vaporeon, and Charmander (yes, of course there’s a Pikachu page right after that). If the prime reason for me collecting these isn’t enjoyment, then I’ve lost focus on what matters long term! Enjoy your opening statement every time- just subscribed today!

I love gengar and gyrados cards. My biggest scare with cards collecting is japenese its so hard but the artwork is soo amazing but big big big scammers

Oh man I only have a few! I have a giant handmade snorlax rug though!
I was also thinking about grading some cards when it was ungodly expensive. So I had to wait and ended up realizing that it actually wasn't worth it. Raw gives you so much more leeway when selling. Once you slap that number on there it pretty much boxes you in value wise.

I started getting back into the hobby with Celebrations and ES. I was doing really good with only buying/opening those two sets. Then I opened a collection box with Vivid, Chililng, and Darkness packs. Instead of keeping those sealed and saving them for resale later, I opened them. This led to me buying individual packs of all three sets which I regret. I only care about completing ES and ST now but I've wasted a lot of money on the other sets. I guess I can get sale off the hits from he other sets but it would feel like even more of a waste now.
When i have a stack of pulls I'm not very happy about, from the wrong sets or my doubles, I put them in penny sleeves and then into a "treasure box" and it helps me feel like they have some value to me, even if its not worth much more than a jar of change.
i think a very good rule of thumb that many new collectors ignore is to know when to buy the chase card instead of trying to pull it. i remember spending more trying to get packs than if i were to buy the chase card and now i dont make that mistake anymore (at least i hope i dont lol)

Hey Doc! You can price match at GameStop with BestBuy prices to avoid GameStops inflated prices while still having access to local stores. I don’t have a BestBuy super close so this is a life saver. (4:18)

My biggest mistakes were buying in to the hype of shining fate, and opening champion’s path not knowing charizard is the only chase card all I have are machamps… newbie mistakes

I’m new to the TCG world, my husband has been collecting on/off his entire life, and neither of us understands the obsession with grading every card. Your reasons for grading make sense, but watching the market (what not, ebay, etc) we routinely see slabs go for less than what it cost to grade them. There’s just way too many out there. Also, it’s concerning to see so many people destroy the slabs they just paid for because they didn’t get a 10. Let people do what they want with their money, but i think it’s a good warning for people to be very cautious and selective about what they grade. You’re only putting money in the pockets of grading companies by sending hundreds if not thousands of cards at a time. I pulled an alt art Lugia from a Silver Tempest pack, and I’m hesitant to grade it. Please forgive me. I just don’t understand. I would just encourage people to be more selective, and like you said, ask yourself, what’s really special to you that you want to protect, regardless of the grade.

my first mistake was accepting my first Pokemon cards pack (Lost Origin booster pack) from my brother during the holidays, opening it and pulling a gold card... and thus, got hooked.
