A fun fact the narrator for this video is my grandfather. It's been a while since he passed away so hearing his voice again is very comforting also you could see my dad in the background. What a great video
I'm from Barrhead and lived above the shoe shop Mill's for many years, I loved Gala day and everything about it, we had a strong great community back then.
Part two, they don't give you enough letters. Good that it will be back this year as Barrhead needs events like these to keep the folk of Barrhead together. That's me on the bandstand doing the announcements, a long time ago now. Sorry that you only got a box of chocolates.
Hello Mary. I had forgotten that. I live two doors away from Tom's mum and given her a link to this clip with the time information. Tom is a great loss to the world and my sadness at his far too early death continues. Maybe the nicest person that I have ever met. Trevor.
Hello freacis, all taken from the Gala video that we had made that year, I was on the committee for 3 or 4 years, unfortunately there was never enough help from the folk of Barrhead and just a small group had to give a great deal of time. I believe that you are right in naming the gala queen. I came to Barrhead45 years ago from down south and thought it was a good idea to do something for the town.
The 1987 Gala was the only one, as far as I know, that had an official video made, I have a copy of that video, there is also a copy in Paisley museum I believe, I had it copied to DVD, ( I have mislaid it at the moment ) and the clips are taken from that. There is a part that tells the name of the Gala queen and I will track it down eventually.
It was called Festival racing in Ireland. The cycling federations have completely destroyed cycling. Lovely to look back at the way cycling was meant to be.
@freacls It would be nice if it could go back to those days and we will have to wait and see what happens this year. Yes, you're right, Sandra Kirk was in the other clip and was on the Gala committee for quite a long time. I do think that these clips are very important as they are part of Barrheads history. Have you seen the clips that I put on of my great grand daughter Lucie, born in Barrhead as was her mum Robyn and dad Jonathan, she is a real darling.
I put this video on TH-cam James but can't give you an answer unfortunately. I did discover that APR is Australian Persuit Race and from the description that I read I believe it was not. Just different classes of cyclists in their separate races.
If i'm correct, by the end of the year, all that excess hair would be cut off, and spikey bleached hair up top, shaved to a dark no 4 at the back and sides would be in. Plus the marble washed denims and white stripey shirts buttoned to the top and tucked into the waist. Mid 80s fashions died a sudden death in '87. Stock, Aitken and bloody Waterman haha
@@jimbangles Oh no. Fashion '87. Check the guys out. I saw guys in Paisley that spring already with the new stuff. Guess Barrhead had to still catch up.
I went to the gala in 2006 and was shocked at tge number of wee nyaffs walking around with boxes of ale and cans of beer. They would simply throw their empties around with gay abandon. I won't be coming back.

So much greenery on the Main Street and spring hill road , everything has been chopped down now
Was that Riley's snooker hall? Think I've still got a queue I won from there up in the loft!
