On one hand, it's a shame they gave a show to her instead of a good character. On the other, I wouldn't wish a CW show on any of my favorite characters.
Us marvel fans were actually glad that he finally left. I only feel bad for DC readers because Bendis has sorta been phoning it in for a while. You can literally mark when Bendis lost interest in a book and is just writing for the paycheck on a book.
And keep in mind, the idea of characters like Miles, Riri, and Naomi are great! It’s just that Bendis’ execution sucks and he usually doesn’t give them much in terms of an actual personality. It’s why his characters flourish whenever he stops writing them.
Let's not be too general. Bendis was awesome at street level heroes. But he started to suck when he started doing big team books and doing events. His runs on daredevil and ultimate spiderman were excellent. Powers is awesome too. It's unfortunate that when he moved to DC they gave him superman... Its the worst thing bendis could have done.
The Superman thing really hurt me when it happened. Superman had always been a superhero that went over my head and I barely read his comics. But that run with Jon really got to me, really inspired me to see why others liked Superman so much, and I started to consume other stories that people recommended to me. That single run completely changed how I viewed a character, to the point of making him one of my favorites, and seeing it all thrown away really put me off DC for a while.
same here. the change in creative team on the superman rebirth series as well as the direction they went with with batman, flash, teen titans, justice league, and cancelling titans, i just stopped reading dc comics in its entirety
Same, I'm actually a pretty big Superman fan but New52 had put me off of him but then when Rebirth started and the stories being told about Superman as a dad were just so good but then Bendis came on and ruined it and I just haven't been able to pick up a Superman title since
Same, but it cuts even deeper for me since it helped me connect with my own father(not that we weren't connected before but). He had been a diehard superman fan his whole life and I just couldn't understand. Everything I had seen of him he was boring or mishandled. Then I read Tomasi's superman and everything my dad said about why he loved superman clicked. So to see it ripped away because of some pompous golden boy they tried so desperately to appease, simply because he was such a big name at marvel disgusts me. Especially since the father son relationship wasn't thrown away for anything interesting, instead just because he was too lazy to learn how to write a child character.
Judging by the cover of the first issue I thought Naomi was going to be about her solving mysteries. That sounds really cool and different from the standard superhero stuff. But unfortunately I guess that’s not the case.
And honestly let's be real anytime we have a character like that built around mystery like dcs the question or something thier always fun and interesting to watch also most of them are kind of on edge white guys or moraly gray so someone younge and more positive Would be a great pince of uniqueness to the architype
A teenage girl is supposed to be Nancy Drew in a universe with universe with super criminals? That doesnt sound compelling, it sounds like a YA novel. Go read that if you dont want to read about super heroes
Mystery solving would be so much cooler especially having her be young and optimistic about stuff. Instead of a world of super powered people it's more just futuristic tech like and have her parents as either journalists or detectives who were trying to take someone high up in power down, they get gunned down and she gets dropped on earth to protect her. So you can have her solving where she comes from and why she's adopted in the beginning. Heck then you could make her a detective and insert her more naturally into crossovers.
When I first heard Naomi was getting a show, my immediate reaction was “why?” I don’t remember fans campaigning for her to get her time in the spotlight and frankly, I completely forgot about her until she was brought in for Bendis’s Justice League run.
I think Rocket does need her own show. In Young Justice she showed up in 2 episodes in season one, I don't think any times in s2, once in s3, and *might* appear in s4. She deserves the spotlight, at least for a little while
Hell the character is quite literally only 3 years old. Its very clear she only got a TV show not out of fan backing but purely due to backdoor executive stuff. No character gets this popular that fast.
If I learned anything from Bendis's prior work on solo heroes he's created, they have a ton of angst, and initially generic superpowers, without a real superhero name they used to/never had (Powers, Jessica Jones, and Naomi). I thought it was about a girl who lived in DC universe and learned how to succeed, then it turns out she's a Superman type being who's now every where. I know some close friends who love this story, and the way it's been presented, it never hooked me, like her name and cover say one thing, but inside says another. Haven't seen the show, but from what I've heard, it's just the comic, but with some changes.
Miles Morales is the outlier on that theory but yeah just another instance showing that they ran out of ideas and can’t think of new compelling characters
@@Anyone690 Miles Morales is an outlier in a lot of ways regarding Bendis. Basically Miles is the reason he still gets work. Anyone who made Miles can't be a bad writer in general, right? Right? Avengers: Disassembled, Young Justice, LOSH...
@@lobaoguara2332 Honestly when I first heard of this character and saw her front cover, I thought she was going to be EXACTLY what u just described. I was very disappointed
If you are new here, please know that Drake is a pillar of championing positivity, diversity, and social awareness when it comes to comics and other related properties, and that is very rare here on youtube because negativity tends to stand out much much more. So if he is saying something "negative" in regards to this character, its is done from a place actual critique and analysis of the whole of the character.
@@DarkFableX If you are are saying this unironically No where did i even say that, all that is being said, his statement on the character comes from a place of actual critique and not from reactionary social politics.
I'm mostly just surprised since he normally is very quick to defend against claims of tokenism, deserved or not, so it feels odd for him to actually call it out
I was more interested in exploring the Thangarian and the Ranian living in small town America together. This wasn't a case of two enemies finding out that they weren't all that different. They hated each other but had to work together to keep the galaxy safe
I was thinking the same thing! Like what if they both try to raise her and they split custody of her and so she has these two dads that hate each other but love her. Would have been really fun.
I suspect the blandness is semi by design. It gives the show room to take her random directions without it being called out of character and all her powers are probably very budget friendly and fit in with pre-made effect from there other shows. The other characters you mentioned require creativity and budget because most of them don’t live in standard towns with standardised powers. Even popular shows like the flash have terrible CGI when they try an effect that will only be used one time and don’t let the MANY speedsters think to far out of the box that often.
I feel like Bendis has been on auto-pilot since 2015 when Hickman was in charge of marvel status quo. I think he needs to go away from mainstream comics completely for a bit and write some original stuff. It would also be a nice way for him to read a couple of current comics and get caught up with continuity. I feel Bendis always ignores continuity or on-going story lines which is frustrating.
I feel like the worst thing he could've done was make her a Superman clone. We have so many of that in DC. Why not give her something extremely specific where she actually has to try to utilise properly?
I wish we were getting a series about Icon and Rocket, both are established characters of color with unique powers and backstories, and they play well off each other as a team. If they wanted to pay tribute to Dwayne McDuffie why not adapt some of his characters?
If dc comic gonna do that their going to let shit tier writers to ruin them or just make the series boring. Cause its hard to make a good story while Twitter creeps are breathing down your neck :/
As being of someone of color and enjoying various publications of both Comics, TV shows, and anime I can completely understand the means of what happens when people try to rush productions on ideas to create diverse concepts to widen the spread of popularity for them, and I completely agree with you, to develop a character especially of one of color you have to slowly progress to that position of fandom, otherwise you do actually end up with a very flimsy overpowered perspective that doesn't match the overall aesthetic, Naomi is basically another attempt and example of what Marvel tried to do with Miss America aka America Chavez in her comic book debut, which by the way was so bad it got canceled after just like three issues, she's overpowered made of ethnicity and has no true ark to her name yet she is posted out to be the most powerful of them all and apparently is put front and center for the public to see just to be accepted right away, and if you deny her you are then judge because they think you don't like her simply because she's of ethnicity, I am no fan of that type of writing and definitely don't like it when they force diversity, just because it's a thing that everyone else is doing. if you want diversity do it right or don't do it at all, that's all I have to say on the matter.
Both marvel and DC are full of Characters that are overpowered by the start why the hell should them be a person of color or a female make them be worse then fucking superman.
@@lunakingsley.7247 I think the problem is that the opponents they face are too different. If you are gonna have a powerful hero, you need powerful villains, Superman has powerful villains.
Not going to lie, when I saw America Chavez's backstory in Marvel Rising, I was like "Wait, this is almost the same as KalAOL's backstory in Marville (which itself was meant to be a satire of Superman's backstory) except her home world actually _was_ destroyed, she's from another universe instead of the future and her parents are a lesbian couple" On a side note, I didn't care much for Riri Williams in those films but Spider-Gwen (I'm not calling her Ghost-Spider when Miles gets to keep Spider-Man but she can't be Spider-Woman), Squirrel Girl and Kamala Khan are easily among my favorites. Hopefully the MCU Ironheart show will change my mind about Riri.
i like her name. but really her powers are just what? ive never read her stuff but from what you said wow. i think giving a super human character a unique power gives you alot A lot of push to where you can go narratively
I think for a Teen Superhero who struggles with what they're going through with their newfound powers, the Character "E-Ratic" does a Phenomenal Job, especially when you find out they could only become a Superhero 10 min per day.
The key to improving diversity is placing an emphasis of having actually GOOD characters. A prime example is something like Arcane which is diverse as fuck but is primarily celebrated for having good characters. Due to this I see far fewer arguments about representation as people simply enjoy the characters for being great. Naomi isn't a good character and that critique shouldn't be overlooked but rather acted upon by making her more engaging.
I agree wholeheartedly, Arcane nailed it by making these characters more than what they were. Representation works the best when characters simply exist and allow to be. The moment one knows it's the hand of the "creator" is at hand when it comes to the story it pulls consumers from the project.
Encanto is also well-loved right now, and I was very happy no one mentioned anything about "diversity" (I mean, Disney cartoons has generally had different races in their series for a while now) until some bored journalist recently found it apt to point it out *facepalm**
@@Manganization Disney/Pixar kinda gets it buy having characters exist. Even the DCAU done better. It's the comics itself that seems to have the worse oversight.
Bendis is disrespectful crazy that DC will allow him to act the way that he does and still think that their fans would be loyal to them. For him to age Jonathan Kent up just to abandon the comic as a whole Is orderly ridiculous and embarrassing for a seasoned writer. Naomi it’s a throwaway character that was just ushered in For the sake of diversity which is why it’s cheap and nobody gives a fuck
When I first heard about the show Naomi the only thing I had in mind was "ok, it's a show about teenage superhero... what else? Like that's the premise of her comic, what is her power, does she have a hobby? Is she DC eqivilent to Ms. Marvel whose like a superhero fangirl?" I tried to research her and ... didn't learn much. Than the trailer came out and ... also didn't learn much. And I watch this video to actually learn something... and I learn she's pretty much Bendis's character. Now everything make sense.
I've just watched Naomi Episode 1, its...alright. It was mentioned that she's Superman fangirl and has a blog dedicated on the boy scout, but I don't see much enthusiasm when 'Superman' came to her hometown. In the live action, Superman is one of a few comic book characters that shouldn't exist in her real life world, so his appearance should trigger some kind of eagerness reaction from Naomi. Ms. Marvel is way more a passionate fangirl than Naomi.
@@LuffyBlack Nowhere did they ask for this character to be perfect. Just compelling or unique in any way. This is not a high bar, far from perfection. Miles morales does it, kamala kahn does it, spectrum does it, blue marvel does it (and with a superman powerset to boot.) The writing being bad has nothing to do with black or other poc characters being held to an unfair standard compared to their white counterparts. You're trying to point to a double standard that doesnt exist.
@@LuffyBlack every New comic character has to justify their existence, as not doing so means that comic (and most often that character) will die. It's hard to get a new character out there, then you have to get them/their story interesting enough to succeed, and it's true that if the character and their story are ethnically diverse then it's gonna be even harder, but that's why it's important to give the character as much chance to succeed as possible
Unpopular opinion: Bendis isn't actually that good of a writer. Like his best work is Miles Morales Spider-Man and Miles only really developed his own distinct personality after Bendis left.
I think he's good on some stories, see ultimate Peter Parker and supposedly alias. The problem is he became such a big name he was given stories he wasn't good at, like his event comics, and given so much work that his characters started to get less unique and more marketable even in stories he is usually good at. I'm talking about the infamous bendis dialigue replacing good character work and having them all sound the same. He's kinda the micheal Scott of comics, so talented he got "promoted" above his competency.
No, he's a good writer, Ultimate Spider-man proved that 2 decades ago He has is flaws and does need to be reigned in a little more by editorial though. He's too wordy and a lot of his characters speak too similarly
@@BaithNa It also to me feels like he just never evolved as a writer either, just has the same style of writing he had in Ultimate Spider-Man and it worked at that time but it's been 20 years now and you gotta change things up.
His best creation* is Miles. His best work is arguable some of the stuff he did in the 2000s. Ultimate Spider-Man, Alias / Jessica Jones, Daredevil (with Maleevs on the art, a genuine standout) and I'm still a big defender of his work on New Avengers, even if like Lenox W said the characters all sound same-y.
@@gregcourtney751 Events like Civil War II, aside from it clearly commissioned because the MCU was adapting the original storyline, are why Bendis should not be doing events. Those aren’t his forte. There’s a glaring continuity error in the situation where Bruce Hulks out because at that point in Totally Awesome Hulk it was shown Bruce wasn’t able to transform anymore. He’d put in effort to put himself in life threatening situations just to bring out the big guy and no Hulk. The whole plot is the characters shedding brain cells to make it happen, Captain Marvel playing into self-fulfilling prophecy and ignoring evidence she’s being played. Tony even gets put to the sideline at the end so Riri can take spotlight as Ironheart. The plot catalyst itself is an obvious plot device character, who does a Poochie at the end in that he vanishes never to be seen again.
I am very glad that Naomi got a CW show over Static because I don’t want my boy done like that. Leave him out of that universe. He doesn’t deserve that fate.
I really respect that your issue is with weak writing and bad marketing decisions, and Not some reactionary hatred of diversity driven creation of heroes. Your positive points that she's not a derivate or legacy hero from an established white title was important to state.
This I think explains alot of the issues with some of the diversity driven heroes that are successors or derivative of mainstay names. Alot of them do have potential... but often times, the people behind their creation or writing go in without a plan, expecting just the diversity to carry it and not have to worry about trying to build up too much.
I do have that problem because I feel like just from his opening dialogue if they had fleshed her out with all the things she can do she might have actually been very interesting.
@@CountDVB I feel sad because the only way diversity is possible at this point is race bending existing characters and the newer characters will never work with a poor foundation. I actually thought Naomi was decent but CW is making the show so it's not gonna work. I feel horrible that Naomi is screwed over for being associated with CW.
@@eduardopantoja9115 The hard thing about pushing new characters really is that you need commitment. You need to put in the time and effort to try to make this character a thing. First that requires spreading awareness and good advertising so people know of said characters existence. Second is actually giving time to build something of a fanbase and not cancel it if it doesn't immediately become a big hit. It's time-consuming stuff and companies tend to more about short-term profits than long-term.
It sounds like Naomi is slowly becoming the “Mantis” of DC A character who is in everything and very powerful just because they have become a writer’s pet to their creator
Oh no. If I think where Naomi might be headed, I think she might become the Mantis of DC Comics if you know what I mean. Specifically the timeframe where she was a writer’s pet and had the entire story revolve around her.
I actually had the same problem when I first read moon girl and devil dinosaur. They just explain that this random pre-teen is the most intelligent person in the world without any explanation or mention of her before. I will say that a super genius that is best friends with a ginormous Dino that swaps bodies with her is a very fun idea and can make so many fun stories, but moon girl is so boring as a character that it removes all the fun in that idea. Also, she doesn’t really have a fun personality, acts like an adult to everyone, hates everyone except for devil Dino and never really has any difficulties in anything (that I remember). I really hope that the new Disney show is gonna fix all of that and it looks like that they are! TL;DR: you need a good character to make a good story. If it’s a bland character, it’s really hard to make a good story.
This man elegantly said, what I've been saying for years. I got no problems with diverse characters, but you gotta put in the time and writing to make them good and unique as a character first.
The thing is to write amazing and relatable characters they have to go through a proper heroes journey and struggle along the way. Lately a lot of writers and creators seem to want to skip these steps when making these new characters that if written properly could be iconic and amazing if put through the proper hurdles.
When the naomi show was announced i too when why, i personally would love to have lesser character like the wonder twins (which was set up at the end of crisis on infinate earths), or the ryan choi atom or even aqualad, allowing us to finally sea atlantis and themascyra but instead we got this. I remember at fandome the first teaser for this show was naomi walking out of a building in human form at that was it, nothing cool or exciting about it or her.
Miles, Naomi and Ironheart all suffered from the same problem to me. On the outset they were… kinda pretty boring. And it took time and other writers to give them more character.
Naomi's story in Action Comics was the catalyst that caused me to sit down and re-evaluate my comic book collecting. I suddenly realized good stories were no longer the rule but the rare exception. I let all of my subscriptions lapse after that.
I mean, Vixen did get an animated show on CW as part of the Arrowverse. I never watched it but i guess it doesn't matter since, as far as i know, one of their spin-offs which deals with time travel has completely retconned that show's events out of existence.
naomi is one of the biggest let downs, it was hyped up to be like a mystery series with colorful characters but instead it was a nice looking string of pictures and events with robotic dialogue
As someone who enjoys a lot of Bendis' work, I feel like his time at DC may be some of his worst work yet. I still definitley enjoy a lot of his stuff, but man it definitley feels like everythng that DC does is now directly tied to Bendis and his ideas and it kinda just gets in the way of what was already there. DC to me rn feels like either I'm dodging endless batman books or endless bendis books and I'm not really sure how I feel about it.
I’ve heard some people say even Miles didn’t start off that great until more writers came around to help flesh him out more. Bendis seems like a guy with only good intentions, but little idea of how make compelling stories with the characters he creates.
Naw, the first few issues of Miles Morales were pretty good, especially the family dynamic. I think in this case, it's just the future writers not having to task themselves with setting up the character, so they can write scenarios around something Bendis already established. Naomi is just not interesting to those who already read the bajillion Superman DC figurative and literal clones.
@@LuffyBlack I wouldn't say "no one", but if I had to guess it's probably because they have a bit more to offer and that they were established fairly early in the game before people caught on and got sick of them.
I have zero interest in Naomi. Characters that become über powerful and perfect out of nowhere without having to struggle to attain that power bore me.
agreed and honestly that's just sad because we need characters who can struggle and learn how to develop there skills and to not give naomi any of that is just frustrating and lazy.
While I thought the comic was okay (one of the better things Bendis has written at DC) I really don't get why she's getting her own show. But since it's happening, I'm just hoping that the show may add more depth to her that will be adapted to the comics later. At the very least, the comic did give me a new artist to pay attention to! Jamal Campbell's work is fantastic and I'm so glad he's gone on to work on better things (specifically Far Sector. I love that book so much and his art is phenomenal.)
I am still pissed that bendis aged up my favorite character Jonathan Samuel Kent Superboy for his terrible legion of superheroes book which surprise surprise sucked hard and was just terrible.
I only read the future state issues of that book. Please tell me the characters esp. Saturn girl aren't usually that stylized. She looked like that video game guy who rolls everything up. Despite having read legion from different eras this was the first time it would take me pages to know who was who.
Goes to show that Black female characters and their stories have to be exceptionally amazing to earn their approval amongst the comic geeks. And I know that's the elephant in the room being danced around, but I'm Black, so I don't have that option. Like, dude actually called her powers "generic". Guess why they're generic? Decades of them being given to cishet white male characters. He goes to compare her to other Black characters--with varying powers and backstories mind you, one being a male, Black being their only denominator--and lists which Black characters he'd prefer to see instead. We're a monolith apparently. They can have all. We have to choose between one or the other. Why more than one Black superhero when you can have three Spider-Men named Peter Parker in the same film?
@@LuffyBlack Word. If the superpowers of flight and superhuman strength are so generic for a Black female character, why can’t anyone quick-name one other than Storm?
This aged well. At the time of this comment: Naomi has been canceled with a landslide of other DC shows like Legends and Batwoman. God I love revisit old vids
I actually thought the best part of the naomi run was the stuff with her parents. It builds on the overall universe as a whole instead of shoehorning in some new planet/universe that naomis parents are from (of course new stuff is ok, just not in the way they did it IMO). I honestly wish her story had more to do with thanagar/rann conflicts.
I kinda hated that part. It made the story not really about her but the white characters around her. When I finished reading it. It just broke my heart with how much nothing was there for me.
I wish people would realize POC can be flawed. What makes a really good character is how they deal/overcome those said flaws. Why I love a character like Storm (especially through Claremont run).

I would love a Static or Squalad series. It'd get me interested in the CW verse again. I loved Static's old show, and most things related to him. Aqualad I was introduced to with Young Justice, but he's just amazing in it!
I was honestly confused when Ironheart started showing up in crossovers since she was so different from her first appearances. First impressions mean a lot, and they definitely didn't stick with her characterization. Hopefully, Naomi's show is better than the comic.
I like how you try to be fair towards the situation here. It isn't fun to hear about these kinds of things being bad, diverse characters are hard enough to get past the PITCH MEETING, and THIS just paints them in a negative light!
I will never run out of complaints for what Bendis did to the Superman family. Beyond that, for me his books haven’t been fun to read in the last decade because all his characters speak with the same voice
I know nothing about the super man runs , but hearing how he took some one else creative vision away form them is very annoying , at least let them finish it , imagine being a comic writer and being able to work on superman the superman one of biggest hero’s of all time something you probably grew up reading and some big comic guy who already got his start comes in blind sides you , I feel terrible for that writer
yeah the fact he took all of that work with tomasi and Dan jurgans excellent work on superman rebirth stuff and throw it all away for his terrible superman book is just sad and depressing.
I will never forgive Bendis for ruining Jon Kent. I LOVED THAT SUPERMAN SERIES (seriously the the double date to the fall fair was one of my fave issues somehow) and DC willingly shot themselves in the foot by removing the team who gave Supes his highest selling series in YEARS, all bc Bendis came in and pissed all over everything to mark what he wanted and got it. I know B.M.B. was only the first domino in the cascade of problems company wide, but in my opinion DC never fully recovered from B.M.B. landing with a thud, erasing our super family, and years of super sons (and any possibility of making Damian likable). Thanks for COMING Bendis.
You're feelings towards naomi were basically my feelings towards riri William's. Bendis with his OCs usually has interesting concepts but the execution is very hit or miss. Also the characters usually could easily be replaced by pre existing ones like riri with Rhodeys niece or naomi with new power girl. The books always have great art tho. Jamal Campbell is dope.
I love Jamal Campbells art in far sector.Sojourner Mullein is what should be done. She’s a unique character and her experience as a black woman and a former cop on earth play a part in who she is. She’s got green lantern powers but her powers are different. She doesn’t need a lantern or to recharge her ring so she can fight more often but her ring has the cost of not being as strong . There was also a diverse new world in far sector for her to focus on
Last I remember, they announced a Wonder Girl show featuring Yara Flor around the same time Naomi got hers announced. Naomi's was the only one that moved forward.
Basically it seems DC is doing the same thing with Bendis in the comics that they've been doing with Geoff Johns and now James Gunn in the movies. Find a person that has the potential to be successful, and letting them do whatever the fuck they want without any plan or reason
I watched the show. I like it so far, but we have a slow start up so far with the story leaning into the mystery of her origins and why people in her hometown are acting so weird. It's only been 1 episode and yet I am intrigued, which is less than I can say for Peacemaker.
So interesting, I actually really liked Naomi for almost all the reasons you mentioned not liking her. I do think that the powers have been done before, the story is more homage than super origin, and she can kind of do no wrong (like Superman) -- but that's kind of the point for me. As a black woman and lover of superheros, I have seen this all before, but not in someone who looks and feels like me. I feel like Naomi is if I got to be Superman myself and that's why she excites me so much. Just a solitary opinion 🤷♀
As a black person myself, it's nice seeing diversity in comics and seeing a lot more colored superheroes but at the same time if you want to put more diversity into your comics make them good characters. I feel like barely any effort is put into some of these newer characters like Naomi. They give them a generic story, generic powers, with not very thought out ideas. I feel like they just put these colored characters in comic books just for the diversity, They put them out for the sake of it, without any sort of build up of that character and no good stories to make them memorable. It's just "here's a character that's black", that's it. Then again I'm thankful that I can see more characters that look like me but they have no effort into their characters. This doesn't it apply to Static, Vixen, Miles or any of those other popular black characters but to the newer ones that are coming out. It feels like they're putting them out just to put them out.
I feel ya. I am more diversity neutral. I just want good characters that aren't shoehorned in for the sake of diversity points and especially not at the expense of already existing and beloved characters.
I'm just confused by Brian Michael Bendis's writing choice to kill her big bad super fucking quick. Like you could stretch that plot out 100 issues with her dodging assassins, learning to control her powers and becoming powerful over time before fighting the Big Bad.
@@ExeErdna I think it's more just a regular way to create a format for a story. Plus it's not like the big bad is her dad. Maybe just make it a mystery that turns into shonen half way through.
They need to develop her more, that is a certainty. I never read her original series, but it does sound rather generic, the way you describe it. My only real exposure to her was the recent Justice League run, where everyone was more quippy, and she did bugger all. Seriously, I understand Bendis wants Naomi's name to be out there, but for god's sake, have her actually do something! His run so far has had her in it ... And that's about it. Granted, my local comics shop is behind on DC comics (thanks to their idiotic idea of switching distribution) and only have rea dup to issue 68, so I have no idea if it's improved since, but you'd think he'd have her do something or noticeably grow a little after ten issues of her being in it.
Wow.... I'm a huge fan of Bendis work at Marvel but I could not agree with you more that it was a bad idea to remove Tomasi from Superman. Whether it's Superman with Jon or Batman with Damian nobody writes fathers and sons like Tomasi.
So she appears to be of seemingly African descent. So, what? Without that, she is still just another alien super being used for Bendis to make OC money.
@@LuffyBlack What's *your* point? No, I'm serious, for I followed that opening sentence with "[s]o what," yet you thought pointing out Superman's white was a great... something. I honestly want to know why Superman, the *first superhero,* being white matters to my point that Naomi is just another space alien. Note: I am confused by your random response, not triggered.
I love how you actually show the paperback proving that you actually have brought and read the material so you opinion is warranted instead of just dissing it because that's the hot topic for the moment
The show has been pretty unique and quirky they haven’t gone into the portal fights and the psychic bonding with dead parents stuff yet tho It’s presented more as a mystery I think it’s a good show The tone reminds me of Hulu’s runaways Maybe you will like the presentation of the show more than the comic
Heh, yeah, main reason I bought Naomi was I instantly fell in love with Jamal Campbell's art, the story is only ok. Actually exact same situation for Harley Eat Bang Kill, Max Sarin is awesome too. Static had his cartoon, and John Stewart has been in a few series, but yeah, DC and Marvel both need to improve on using their existing diverse cast.
So basically Bendis just creates new overpowered characters for the sake of ethnicity and fattening his wallet, while its up to other people to actually write them with a personality and a purpose once Bendis moves on?
I'd never read anything from Brian Michael Bendis before the whole "Bendis is coming!" slogans started popping up, since I was a relative newcommer to comics and was only reason DC at the time. I gave the Naomi books a shot, was enjoying them well enough... then I don't know which came first but a few of these things made me really dislike what Bendis was doing. First the lesser one: Batman being uncharacteristically un-batman, i.e. skeptical, untrusting and proding, around an unknown sudden power house. Maybe Bruce was just tired of treating kids like dirt, or I don't know, but it felt out of character for him to be so amicable, and while the art of that issue's cover was most likely a joke, I don't think it helped perception. Second is definitely Young Justice: I felt like it threw too many new things at me and simultaneaously bored me to tears. Dropped the book pretty early on, at around when they left the Gem dimension. Third would be how Naomi pretty much manhandled the evil guy from the portal with relative ease. That deflated any real interest in the book and future series including her. And the biggest one was how he aged up Jon into being a teenager. Not only did it throw away any potential stories like a Human/Kryptonian hybrid growing up in the shadow of his father, as you mentioned in the video, but it killed his relationship with Damien, which was something I *LOVED* wholeheartedly. I was so new to the comic book industry that I hadn't had any firm roots in it, and this managed to completely uproot me from comic books in general, as I expected to sooner or later encounter one of those typically mentioned "terrible things the industry did to my favorite books" situations, but I never expected to encounter it so quickly. Now I just perruse comic book youtube channels, the very same channels that got me into comics in the first place, just to see what's been going on lately. Sadly, not much has gotten me excited enough to give it another go.
It honestly sucks that Bendis' runs took you out from the hobby, since his track record isn't good now. He's personally on my shit list because of what he did to Jon. This shit on so many other creator's work so where if I ever wrote something I'll retcon all the aftermath of Bendis
Bendis was really good until Heroic Age (2010) at Marvel, since then i don't know, maybe his contract with Satan expired or something. His early Marvel stuff is honestly the best the company ever did, at least in this decade (Daredevil, Alias, Ultimate Spiderman) and i really liked all his Avengers stuff between House of M, New Avengers, Dark Avengers, etc. Now like i said since then it's like he lost his "touch" and/or doesn't give a shit anymore. It's really sad for the reader.
Bindis sucks, this is true. But his Wonder Comics imprint gave us the fantastic Dial H for Hero reboot by Sam Humphries and Joe Quinones. Silver lining.
As a teenage African American girl myself I loved reading Naomi it had a YA feel and she seemed cool I don’t think every character had a great first appearance it takes time to build a character in the comic industry with so many different authors playing hot potato with the characters and as for her being over powered I love it an extremely powerful black girl is definitely my cup of tea but I get why others would feel the way they feel about it at the end of the day I just want her to become a solid character in the comic universe that little girls can see and obsess over
yea ao far from what I hear from him, the comic sounds good enough actually. I think people are hating the flood of representation ao they choose to pretend everything is about FORCING. I'd say a lot is but this sounds like, if it was made back in the 90s, it would just be another character that would sound great
As a Black man who's loved comics for 30 years and who's always championed for more great characters of African decent, I can honestly say that Naomi sucks. DC Comics itself is just a shadow of what it once was. First, the god awful New 52 and then all this forced woke garbage that came after Rebirth. Miles and Re Re are way better characters than Naomi will ever be. Her show will get canceled before season one is even over
@@scinnyc I would agree if they gave that same treatment to ALLLLLL characters. it seems the terms (woke, rushed and forced) are always directed at the black ones. Ask the new Batgirl, the new black Superman movie that's in development and Anthony Mackie Captain America ..you're eithe.r in denial or living under a rock.
@@The07One 😒When did I ever say that being forced or woke was exclusive to Black characters? I've been a huge fan of the original Alan Scott Green Lantern for years and I was pissed when they suddenly retconned him to be gay after being a straight man with 2 ex wives and 2 children. And I just said that I liked Re Re Williams and Miles Morales so I don't even know how you came to that conclusion
@@scinnyc 👱♂️people hate HATE Riri Williams(not me)....and Miles Morales is YEARSSS away from live-action. So my point still stands. Black LEAD characters always get demolished.
I think sometimes when new characters like Naomi come out people would like to get a new type of power that's interesting to see used like Devil Fruits in one piece but American comics love to copy the superman template. Tbh honest with you that's fine but they at least need a decent backstory. C'mon her back story is so generic. I guess the only reason why this got pushed is because of the writer behind it. But to be fair the crowd that watches CW shows like this like simple stories that they're familiar with so I guess they're trying to cater to that market.
The first episode wasnt perfect but I did enjoy it, granted I had never heard of the character or comic until a few weeks ago when I saw a commercial for the show
Bendis is both one of the best comic writers and one of the worst. If I remember correctly Miles used to be a shallow clone of Peter before Spider-Verse because he doesn’t/didn’t know how to write African American characters correctly
Honestly it’s noble that Bendis wants to make characters that his children can relate to..that’s all well and good. But simply making a character without making them compelling for the sole sake of their existence is really lazy. For example. Miles Morales. Fantastic character one of my favorite heroes to come out of marvel especially since he has taken a Dick Grayson-like role to Peter Parker and the marvel universe as a whole is really great. His origin story wasn’t forced but took advantage of an opportunity for a new character to come and develop in their own right. A character who has flaws who is relatable who comes from a good home (both his parents know about him being spiderman and he is the son of a cop and nurse v cute). Contrast that with someone like Riri Williams who is basically Ray “Skywalker” (🤢). Making a girl a Mary Sue is never going to work because we like characters that we can relate to because they can inspire us as we see ourselves in them. Even tho I am a white dude I can see myself in miles because he deals with the same stuff I had growing up as a teenager. Not even Wonder Woman is a Mary Sue if you think about it because she usually is portrayed as a fish out of water type that many women that I kno can relate to from their own experiences. Making someone completely flawless does not interest anyone
@@Anyone690 Peter can be really unlikably arrogant at times. A lot of that was to do with Ditko tbf, but that character trait never sat well with me. With Miles, I feel that he has a lot to live to, even more than Peter. Why? Because his parents have occupations that make them freaking role models. Doesn't matter how smart he is, if he can't put peoples needs ahead of his own, he'll never live up to the example set by his parents. He also has to, continuity dependent I suppose, have to live up to being Spider-man. Kid is under a lot of pressure, and I feel I can relate to the weight of expectation.
Never, they love that CW cheap because they gotta away with it on Smallville for like a decade. Then Arrow did decently Flash was alright. The rest were there, honestly, CW has too many Superhero shows to the point I don't want to watch any of them now. Give me some one off DCAU movie and I'm fine.
They're doin it right now, it's called Peacemaker on HBO max. I think the HBO Max show are going to try to rival the MCU D+ shows a bit. They obviously don't have the same budget to throw at it but they get by okay and Peacemaker's actually loads of fun in the James Gunn kinda way.
Diversity for the sake of diversity and with no real force behind it is not diversity at all but an irritation that makes you wonder "What was the point? You were doing just fine before!". If you want diversity, you need to make it subtle instead of trying to say "Yey y'all, I'm diverse! Can you like this company I was made to promote just because I'm diverse?.... Please? Why? Why do you need to know why, I'm diverse! Now go like this company I was made to promote!".
@@BaithNa yes, also just on another note: it's another way makes your characters different from each other... just from a design standpoint it's probably best all your characters aren't just white guys.

It can't be a selling point otherwise it detracts from the point of representation and makes it sound like it's some fancy thing you should be grateful you got. It has to be meaningful. Take miss America for example; she only existed to be representation but didn't do anything meaningful besides a dick move towards captain america.
On one hand, it's a shame they gave a show to her instead of a good character.
On the other, I wouldn't wish a CW show on any of my favorite characters.
I almost spit out my coffee reading this.
OOF

Yeah, this is proper balance of the CW situation. I'm glad at this point it isn't one of my favorites

Us marvel fans were actually glad that he finally left. I only feel bad for DC readers because Bendis has sorta been phoning it in for a while. You can literally mark when Bendis lost interest in a book and is just writing for the paycheck on a book.
His Justice League run to a tee.
And keep in mind, the idea of characters like Miles, Riri, and Naomi are great! It’s just that Bendis’ execution sucks and he usually doesn’t give them much in terms of an actual personality. It’s why his characters flourish whenever he stops writing them.
Maybe it's time we started writing our own comics?
@@cynfaelalek-walker7003 god I wish!
Are they making Naomi a lesbian?
@@MakiPcr
Yup
Judging by the cover of the first issue I thought Naomi was going to be about her solving mysteries. That sounds really cool and different from the standard superhero stuff. But unfortunately I guess that’s not the case.
And honestly let's be real anytime we have a character like that built around mystery like dcs the question or something thier always fun and interesting to watch also most of them are kind of on edge white guys or moraly gray so someone younge and more positive Would be a great pince of uniqueness to the architype
Dang the artwork is so good though
That would be pretty fun maybe being the opposite of dark and brooding but full of wonder
When I first heard Naomi was getting a show, my immediate reaction was “why?” I don’t remember fans campaigning for her to get her time in the spotlight and frankly, I completely forgot about her until she was brought in for Bendis’s Justice League run.
The show was conceptualized before the comics character was introduced so there was no fanbase to campaign anyway
Should have been Kaldur, Bumblebee or Rocket.
Static not so much since we got black lightning and should be a guest there
I think Rocket does need her own show. In Young Justice she showed up in 2 episodes in season one, I don't think any times in s2, once in s3, and *might* appear in s4. She deserves the spotlight, at least for a little while
@@maadtee6281 I forgot to @ you lol
Hell the character is quite literally only 3 years old. Its very clear she only got a TV show not out of fan backing but purely due to backdoor executive stuff. No character gets this popular that fast.
Remember, NONE of the money made from this helped black creators
This is the only valid criticism I've seen so far
I would love Naomi's idea if she were an urban detective who solves mysteries of young people in her city, simple, straight and INTERESTING.
@@Anyone690 Miles Morales is an outlier in a lot of ways regarding Bendis. Basically Miles is the reason he still gets work. Anyone who made Miles can't be a bad writer in general, right? Right? Avengers: Disassembled, Young Justice, LOSH...

"BENDIS IS COMING!"
It wasn't a declaration of joy, but rather a warning.
Nice pfp 💅🏻
out of the box = at all
I feel like Bendis has been on auto-pilot since 2015 when Hickman was in charge of marvel status quo.
I think Icon is caught in a legal battle with the Dakotaverse owners and the McDuffie estate.
OMFG yessss
Its not a tv show but there is a Icon and Rocket run going right now.
Yea their comic series has been good so far💯

On a side note, I didn't care much for Riri Williams in those films but Spider-Gwen (I'm not calling her Ghost-Spider when Miles gets to keep Spider-Man but she can't be Spider-Woman), Squirrel Girl and Kamala Khan are easily among my favorites. Hopefully the MCU Ironheart show will change my mind about Riri.
i like her name. but really her powers are just what? ive never read her stuff but from what you said wow.
i think giving a super human character a unique power gives you alot A lot of push to where you can go narratively
My guess is that they probably gave her basic powers so it would be easy to adapt them into a TV show with a low budget, which is unfortunate
Here's my in-depth, scholarly critique: Arcane kicks ass. *All* the ass.

I'm just still bitter about Bendis' Superman and Young Justice run and it has me feeling hesitant about any of his new stuff
i will never forgive him for aging jon up. plain and simple
Yeah , Jon aged up means he indirectly cancel Supersons which at that time is one of the best title DC had.
Just a reminder that DC picked Bendis over Jonathan Hickman. We could’ve had Jonathan Hickman at DC y’all.
But why does she have to be perfect to justify her existence but her white counterparts are not held to this expectation?
@@LuffyBlack Nowhere did they ask for this character to be perfect. Just compelling or unique in any way. This is not a high bar, far from perfection. Miles morales does it, kamala kahn does it, spectrum does it, blue marvel does it (and with a superman powerset to boot.)

Unpopular opinion:
Bendis isn't actually that good of a writer.

Don't watch it, it is worse than the comic, which was mediocre at best
Miles, Naomi and Ironheart all suffered from the same problem to me. On the outset they were… kinda pretty boring. And it took time and other writers to give them more character.
Naomi's story in Action Comics was the catalyst that caused me to sit down and re-evaluate my comic book collecting. I suddenly realized good stories were no longer the rule but the rare exception. I let all of my subscriptions lapse after that.
Vixen and Steel are already on CW shows, and Steel still is. Although, that's not the same thing as them having their own shows.
Plus Vixen was practically written off in the Arrowverse completely.
@@M1ckTheMan I was thinking more of Legends of Tomorrow.
Also Black Lightning had a whole show with multiple seasons.
I mean, Vixen did get an animated show on CW as part of the Arrowverse. I never watched it but i guess it doesn't matter since, as far as i know, one of their spin-offs which deals with time travel has completely retconned that show's events out of existence.
@@justsomeone1555 Retconned for the better.
naomi is one of the biggest let downs, it was hyped up to be like a mystery series with colorful characters but instead it was a nice looking string of pictures and events with robotic dialogue
@@Manganization Yet no one had an issue with the other clones.
You have Phoenix as your display pic...
AAAANNNDDDD it’s just been canceled. Brain Michael Bendis must be furious RN lmao
@@gregcourtney751 no Saturn girl isn’t that stylized in other books.
Vixen did have her own Animated series featuring arrowverse characters. But for Static to not get a show is disappointing.
Drake could've said it has to matter to white people and saved us the watch time.
@@LuffyBlack Word. If the superpowers of flight and superhuman strength are so generic for a Black female character, why can’t anyone quick-name one other than Storm?
I still have not had the chance to read it, but from the quick overview of the comic, I’m not sure I’d be interested in checking out the other books.
Naomi exist
1 second later cw : WERE GONNA MAKE A SERIES OF IT
Drake: Recommends Vixen for show.
Me: Still crying over her only getting two seasons on CW Seed.
@@jamesfrench6840 thats a very good insight! i didn't really think about it that way.

I would love a Static or Squalad series. It'd get me interested in the CW verse again.
I loved Static's old show, and most things related to him.
Aqualad I was introduced to with Young Justice, but he's just amazing in it!
Cw is gone

@@equinox6690 I'll probably give it another go, but I have other things I want to invest my time into
This might be a case of the show being better than the book.
From what I have heard of Bendis and his writing, I feel like a lot of the characters Bendis creates might be more popular under other writers
I can't hate Bendis, as he created both Miles Morales and Jessica Jones, but still, DC needs to give the man direction.
Bendis is coming was a warning
If it worked out like that honestly Naomi would have been a bit too close to Invincible
His run so far has had her in it
Quippy is the go to dialogue style for Bendis. You can see this as early as Ultimate Spider-Man’s early years but that fit the characters.
Okay and Superman's another white guy. What's your point?
@@LuffyBlack
What's *your* point? No, I'm serious, for I followed that opening sentence with "[s]o what," yet you thought pointing out Superman's white was a great... something.
I honestly want to know why Superman, the *first superhero,* being white matters to my point that Naomi is just another space alien.
Note: I am confused by your random response, not triggered.
I love how you actually show the paperback proving that you actually have brought and read the material so you opinion is warranted instead of just dissing it because that's the hot topic for the moment
The show has been pretty unique and quirky they haven’t gone into the portal fights and the psychic bonding with dead parents stuff yet tho
It’s presented more as a mystery
I think it’s a good show
The tone reminds me of Hulu’s runaways
Maybe you will like the presentation of the show more than the comic
Yeah, this seems like a case of the show being better than the book/comic. Should I watch it??
At least Bendis found a new kitty pryde
Thanks for sharing. I wasn't really into her character at all, but I wish live action shows would do Static instead.
I don't have an opinion of Naomi because I still hold an unreasonably petty grudge against bendis for what he did to Jon.
I never heard Naomi, it sounds pretty interesting.
The artwork look good, bit of new Superman?
Dude! I _just_ saw an ad on the bus for this show. [18 Jan 2022]
It's such a coincidence that you published a video about this character today. XD
Bendis was really good until Heroic Age (2010)
at Marvel, since then i don't know, maybe his contract with Satan expired or something.
Good news it got cancel

So she's basically Classic Mantis
I think sometimes when new characters like Naomi come out people would like to get a new type of power that's interesting to see used like Devil Fruits in one piece but American comics love to copy the superman template. Tbh honest with you that's fine but they at least need a decent backstory. C'mon her back story is so generic. I guess the only reason why this got pushed is because of the writer behind it. But to be fair the crowd that watches CW shows like this like simple stories that they're familiar with so I guess they're trying to cater to that market.
So this guy is the one I'm going to blame for making Joe Kent grow up.
White guy here. I like Miles more than Peter.

Doesn't matter how smart he is, if he can't put peoples needs ahead of his own, he'll never live up to the example set by his parents. He also has to, continuity dependent I suppose, have to live up to being Spider-man.

@@Slimshadow457 I forgot about Peacemaker. Yes, the DC characters deserve better shows, proper shows like Peacemaker.
