Wonderful explanation. But again it boils down to one thing and that is the grace of God. Without Him having grace we cannot believe in Him. Without believing in Him there is no salvation. Now, believing is not just an idea or a feeling but it is in deed. That means, if God does not have mercy for someone to believe then that person will perish in his unbelief. So we are back to square one - He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy and whom He wills He hardeneth. Without the mercy of God one cannot stop hardening their hearts and yet the scriptures commands us "harden not your hearts". But how? When God does not have mercy then how can one not stop hardening. Now this has opened the door to fatalism for me for what I am going through presently.
So I see this verse as to give hope to those who believe in false gods due to their upbringing, but lived lives that where pleasing to Jesus. I can point to 7 verses in the Bible that say we will be judged on what "we do." This verse is the only hope my friends have who are outside of wanting to believe in Jesus while living on earth due to their upbringing. This verse proves that God will have mercy on whom he chooses when a non believer dies.
