The era when gaming wasn't so underground but was still pretty niche and rough around the edges relative to mainstream, like a combo of the teenage millennial and young adult gen x bro and nerd culture as opposed to today when you can pretty much assume anyone under the age of 50 plays games. Back then gaming was like bringing the arcade in your house, today it's like trying to bring pixar studio into your house-- we went from games that took a year or two with 40 immature bros, to corporate sellouts who exist like a meaningless cog in the machine with some dev studios hiring hundreds to thousands and taking a decade. Man I can play Quake today and have a more entertaining experience than in some bogus wannabe tv show like cyberpunk Back then we had fast paced arcadey action, lots of trash talking fueled by energy drinks and pizza, today games are slow thanks to all these gameplay killing RPG elements: I have to choose my character, my skill set, where I want to invest my skills, I have to customize my weapons and I have to engage in dialogue with NPC's, and in multiplayer I have to choose a pre made class, and everyone's in a party chat because some dumbass can't take mean words, and many gaming studios actively work out ways to end trash talk for good when that's like 60% of what made online gaming entertaining. Culture is downright dog shit today and that's the real reason modern gaming sucks despite amazing technology, everyone seems like they're miserable and can't connect to people and that's because this new culture of feelings has made everyone superficial and full of shit. To hell with modernity, bring back the past!
The difference in production value between 2006 and 2007 is shocking. Was the 2007 season also on USA Network? If so, they really screwed up. Why did they make the 2007 season so confusing to follow? When they show the gameplay, it's never explained who's leading in the series, what place the teams are at in the bracket, etc. And they don't show highlights of the previous games like they did in 2006. So pretty much absolutely no background context to how important the game is. The commentator they hired in 2006 was 10x better (even though Puckett later admitted he wrote all the lines lol). The 2007 dude just didn't have a knack for commentary/acting. And what happened to the pro features that they had in every episode in 2006? Its a night and day difference if anyone goes back to watch 2006 season after this
