How can you possibly say that anything sounds worse than the Futaba linear switches? While I understand why someone would dislike the sound of MX Blues, they aren’t anywhere near as ear splitting as the squeaky Futaba switches.

Let me share a tale from my childhood: back in the 80's my father worked for Brazil's First Bank (Banco do Brasil) in the center of data processing (Cesec). One of the most noisy and loudest room was just a couple floors up where he actually worked: A medium sized room where almost 24/7 around 30 people typed vigorously into their, guess what?, Amstrad word processing PC's. It was so loud that it would literally echo down the avenue and could be heard almost anywhere in that building. I remember vividly that sound as I walked from my school towards his workplace every friday so he could take me to a video rental. Now I finally understand why that sound was so deeply engraved in my memories. Thanks (?) I guess lol

Namely: the Bloody LK optical switches, the Adomax Flaretech optical switches, the APT Hall Effect switches, the Unicomp buckling spring switches, and the ALPS-inspired Matias switches. I am curious in the order he would place these, though.

I don't mind MX Blues, and clones except for use in an office setting. In fact my main board at home being a 10 keyless Aula uses dampened Gateron Blues. I also have a Rosewill full size keyboard with Cherry MX Browns for my work keyboard, but the shift keys love to bind/stick at times, so might switch to the IBM kb-8923 I got for free from the e-waste pile at the local recycle drop off for free once I give it a good cleaning, and testing for my work board.
Far as hating Cherry keys I get it as they can be overpriced compared to the clones, but they work well at least with the MX series, however the Cherry ML series I so want to love on my Cherry G8404100 board, but at the same time I want to send it off into the pits of hell fire because once used for a decent length of time they turn to scratchy piles of dog shit.

The amstrad is incredible, they managed to make a keyboard that sounds like a spring jumping on an infinite tunnel! About the futaba vintage linear I think that when they were brand new they didn't squeak, it must be some sort of deposition inside the switch of something that decomposed on another part of the keyboard, or grease (maybe oil) drying out. A good cleaning, maybe with an ultrasonic cleaner, may solve that problem, and I think some lubing certainly will. Anyway the build tolerances of those switches should be incredible compared to the "state of the art" of nowadays, cherry switches.

I was really excited when I got a keyboard a few years ago with Cherry MX Blue switches. I absolutely loved them... for maybe a few weeks. While I grew up with some beautiful sounding keyboards back in the day, the clicks in the Cherry MX Blue switches were surprisingly high pitched and tinny, not like the old IBM keyboards I remembered. I assumed that it was just me, but when I saw this video I watched it specifically to see if you'd mention the Cherry MX Blues. It feels good to know that it's not just me. They really don't have a great sound, despite all of the hype.

This is a very specificly odd kind of an ASMR video. Your voice is deep and mellow but at the same time, I did not expect this much R-rated hate towards old keyboards. That's new to me. After decades of speaking English, I thought I had heard every possible offense in this language. You have proven me wrong. Thank you for the lesson! 😁

:P I knew MX Blue would be up there... TBF some really solidly built boards with thick caps cans sound alright with Cherry Blues, like not the worst thing ever, especially if it was a good batch that doesn't rattle. Buuut still not my cup of tea at all.. :) Having used both Cherry and the clones before I noticed that they had a strange effect where my ears would feel like they 'closed up' a bit, along with some kind of bass rumble from the effect of my ears doing this. I found this is called "acoustic stapedius reflex", and it is basically involuntary middle ear muscle contraction to protect against loud noise. I think the frequency of the click in blues is probably right in the upper register of a baby's scream, pretty awful! Gaterons and Outemus are the worst for this, really distracting to type with.

I find the sound of Cherry MX Blues and even Greens to some extent, as well as Razer Greens and similar switches to sound cheap and thin. The sound of a Model M, however, has a nice loud midrange-rich thock to it, plus the metallic ping of those springs is so satisfying. I do want a Model F as well, which is much higher-pitched but I've heard has a much better key feel, not to mention an insane amount of durability and longevity, especially the 4704 line, which good old Ellipse is recreating and selling brand new.

I actually recently bought a terminal off ebay with these, where the user handwired it and replaced all the switches with NOS ones.
