I’ve watched a couple of your videos now and I have to say I think they’re great. Hearing about your experience coming to work as a photojournalist and then doc filmmaker makes it all seem somewhat possible. I’ve done a lot of work with politicians and my own channel has to do with journalism, but actually getting a job shooting for a news outlet feels quite out of reach. Guess it’s all about networking though. Looking forward to watching more of your stuff!
Thanks! I think it’s practicing to get good first, then networking. Either One without the other won’t be enough in the beginning. It’s a long haul no matter what you do though - the secret is to just keep going!
Good to hear you story bro. It's all too easy to assume people just got lucky when they get a break. You never see the blood, sweat and tears over the years that went into getting that break!
Trying to do the same at 27, because its never late as in the past I struggled financially and couldnt even afford a beat up DSLR. All I have to say that its not important to know how to use a camera, put it in auto I dont care, the most important thing is to be there when something happens, its not a studio shooting they dont want the best photos they want photos, period. All you have to do is basically learn framing, but as I said just be there when something happens and be careful.
Such an informative and underrated video! I love how nonchalant you talk about doing some in crazy stuff like breaking into places, riots, death and chilling with monks but I can't even go to the shop without feeling awkward, out of place and like I am going to get into trouble....
This video inspires me! Thanks for putting it together. I am on the same page with my TH-cam channel chasing my dream as a coffee farmer and documenting.
Great story. I hope they started paying you more than $25 after you got your foot in the door. I went the commercial photo route when I first started. Worked for free as a second/third assistant for a couple of months then started getting paid $50/day. This was back in 1990.
Wow, I can't believe it you watched 'War photographer' when you teach English in Korea and it changed your way. Also I dreamed and tried to reach it too. However, I didn't recognize i have no talent on documentary work at that time. Still it feels like bittersweet dream. Anyway, your all the comments of this post make me to move again, Thanks!
Oh god damn it. As a new fashion photographer about to embark to Croatia and looking into microphones for video I’m finding myself binging your videos. I want a Ferrari; not malaria.

Excellent advice about just do it, do what you love, put yourself out there, because in reality no one else really cares.
exactly!
Thank you for sharing your experiences Luc. I love watching your videos and learning from you!
Awesome, glad you like them!

Thanks Luc! Inspiring and deeply appreciated.
Thanks Dan, glad you liked it!
Thanks a lot for tons of information and inspiration you are sharing! Hello from India, fan of your story.
My pleasure!
Thank you, needed some inspiration!
Amazing, glad it helped!

Ha! It’s a muscle, like anything else. I just had a lot of practice at it!
Well then I'll keep on practicing!

You're very welcome. Happy shooting!

Totally changed my life! I didn't have any talent then either though, so you should absolutely go for it.
Interesting video
thanks!
what is that black thjing on your hoodie? its like artifacts... what are you filming this with? is it the youtube compression?
It’s my magic aura! Probably the compression, who knows!
Definitely more hard work and commitment than luck. Fair play 👍
Probably slanted that way for sure! But luck has been so important too...as long as you're ready to jump on it
great video!! I'm wondering how can you hold a camera in a public place without getting bothered by the police?
Stills cameras are usually a lot easier, especially if it's just a mirrorless without a mic. Video gear can get a lot trickier!

Ha! Hey, I love a nice trip just as much as the rough ones - they just don't seem to come around for me as much!

Haha, my connections with the kingdom of Morocco are a little tenuous - but sounds super fun!
yep yep yep
Did anyone ever told you, you look like Jake Gyllenhaal from Nightcrawler?
That is not the first time I've had that comparison, though a first for nightcrawler...ideally it would be southpaw!
