Fool Your Friends with an Old Carnival Scam: Pricking the Garter!

- Get a refresher and a history lesson on the "fast and loose" con game we've learned on Scam School before. In this episode Brian teaches an earlier version of the same scam. This one's known as "pricking the garter" and instead of a chain, we use a rolled up belt. Challenge your friends to see if they can put their finger in the true center of the belt loop so that when you unravel the two ends of the strap, it remains "fast" rather than pulls away "loose."

Scam School like the other person i saw how this worked straight away I don't know how other people don't, anyway I find that this works great if you set up a prediction beforehand for them, for example before you even start tell them that they are going to lose win lose, I have found that this gets a much better reaction and always leads to them wanting more tricks/scams.

I figured this out before he even finished explaining it, BUT I probably never would have noticed if werent introduced as a scam.
Any one else notice at 13:09 he gave cheers and the guy didnt have anything in his cup but he acted like he did haha..
I think I know how it works but I'm not sure because I never saw them doing it. Here is my theory (before seeing their trick)
If you look at a belt, it has a smooth outside and a rough inside (mine at least). If the subject puts his finger in the rough hole, you make sure you get the 2 smooth sides on top of eachother, like touching and then you pull the belt. Now if he puts his finger in the smooth hole, you put the to endings of the belt rought side against eachother and you pull. This is how it worked for me haha, maybe I'm cheating with my belt idk ;)
It would be important to use a belt that is the same color and feel on both sides.
I never heard of this game but I am definitely going to try this trick.

I realized instantly how the belt trick works. neither in depends how you unscrew the belt. :))

That's scott backhavich or however you spell his last name. He visited my school a year or two ago in central california and he is an excellent speaker and has inspired many students and adults. "Scam School" you have no idea you met an awesome person like you think he is! He travels all around the country talking to hundred if not thousands of schools and inspiring even more
He says the exact same message to every school he talks to. And it's a tired message too. I'm not a fan.

i think i figured it out, and i think the scammer did too. it has to do with how he pulls the belt away. there are two ways to pull the away, so no matter where he puts his fingure you can make him lose.

the way i usually do it is to let them see how i roll it up ,and then ask them ,then pull the thing the other way round as to how you roll it up

Belt Buckle is rad, but it would be cool if you had one with your logo on the crest
Do you know I think there's an easier way to work it out. Belts tend to have a rough inside and glossy outside. To make the mark lose look what the finger is touching - if the inside of the loop is rough, the join the two shiny faces of the ends together and vice versa.

I figured out that it had to do with how it was peeled out but I did not figure out the directions in which it had to be peeled out for the other guy to lose.
lol I knew right from the start that the outcome is affected by how the person unwinds the belt. It's pretty obvious. I just didn't know how to execute it until I saw the explanation at the end.
I dig the belt buckle. It's appropriately bad ass.
He actually had a very minimal amount in his glass. If you go a few seconds before the point that you said, you'll see a few drops in his glass. haha..

Why can't I get this right? I don't understand what he means by "2 layers" I get a consistent outcome, but if I roll it tighter or looser, completely different outcome.

I mean I instantly noticed the way he was unwrapping the belt each time
i tryed this with shoot glasses instead of fingers to win drinks works so well

i have one friend that will pick up on the slightest varriations such as witch part of the belt u pull on so when i did this trick for him in front of many people i made sure he kept winning and everyone else was lossing

i came up with a formula...
if choose x=inner, or y=outer, then b=winner//a=loser
if choose x=outer, or y=inner, then a=winner//b=loser

I am paused at 4:32 seconds, and know exactly how to do this trick. Never saw it done before...but it is so simple.

i like this one even better if just a quick bar scam using a belt thats different on bothj sides makes it a bit quicker thinking leather to leather or design to design justmy little 2 cents on it

that was my childhood game, so simple trick.
I can't drive/ride without a seat-belt, it is very uncomfortable to me to not have a seat-belt on.
I learned a version of this in second grade using string
