The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I don't understand the words they are singing and that does not take away from the beauty of the performance. It is an expression of faith. Having faith is a good thing.

A wonderful and moving post for Jewish Heritage Month! Jan Peerce singing on the Sullivan show to celebrate Passover in 1970. As always, he sang with great spirit! This was his last appearance on the show, and thank you so much for posting it! I hope to see more of the great Jan Peerce on the Sullivan show, and I really appreciate all your posts of his performances. He is my favorite operatic tenor!

One more proof of why the Show became so popular, variety, culture and even anthropological value. I don't think I was the only one to go immediately to look for the ceremonial meaning of these canticles. As my grandfather used to say, you won't go to bed without learning one more thing...

Beautiful singing, especially considering that Mr. Peerce was nearly 66 years old at the time.

Sang into his 70’s and he had his full voice. Only a stroke stop his appearances.

I recommend the great recordings of yiddish folk songs performed by Peerce here on TH-cam. He was a great singer. Sad he always stood in the shadow of Richard Tucker.

This caused a rift between Tucker & Peerce, who were brothers in law, since Tucker & his wife, Peerce's sister, lived with Peerce's parents for a time, and Peerce introduced Tucker to contacts that ultimately became the basis for Tucker's operetic career...though, at the same time, Peerce did not encourage Tucker's singing, which Tucker apparently resented. I'm sorry I never got to meet Peerce...it was only long after his death in 1984 that I discovered that we were cousins.
