He was one of Robert's partners in MI-5. This "con artist" cover story is pretty standard "hide in plain sight" sort of spycraft.
His wife was dumb though. They gave that asshole the money, thus removing any reason for him to ever contact them again.

Something that freaked me out was when they explained how Sarah was locked in that bathroom for days on end alone. So like, he could have left others locked in rooms somewhere and they could have never been found and just died there. 🤯
I thought the same! And he went to prison for a while, not long enough but for a while so what if other people were trapped while he was away! 🤯
Remember, when they found his hotel room they found the ID of a Brazilian woman who was never found. He could have very well killed her or others.

I cant help but i find these stories about con men to be very fascinating. Its something about how they can talk people into many situations they normaly wouldnt go for. So i wouldnt mind more content on that subject Grande.
Well the easy answer to that is that they all are psychopaths… and they are born to learn how to harm others. Just as easy as that. They are abnormal and they learn at a very early age how to manipulate people. 🤷🏻♀️

Yes! The fact that many victims of con artists can be very intelligent doesn't matter. That's what I find so interesting--they are holding something that the victim desires (love, money, etc). But, they meet someone like this and just pony over everything including their last pennies.

Wow, I finished watching this two days ago! Every time I heard it mentioned in the documentary that he said he was an MI5 agent, I burst out laughing. Even the guy he worked with at the car dealership said he found it exciting being his so-called 'get away' driver. It's fascinating that people were fooled by him, particularly as his story was so far-fetched.
In the TV series "Callan" the cover story was the agents worked in a junkyard. Maybe he borrowed elements of the story from there.

I think its precisely because the story was so far fetched, people believed him. That was an observation made by Hitler that the bigger the lie people will believe it, along with repeating it a thousand times.
I genuinely feel sorry for people who don't get giant red flags when their "interesting friend with the glamorous job" asks for money.

The second some one tells me “listen what I’m about to tell you, you must keep this confidential, I’m a secrete agent” I’m think Oh this person has been smoking some Walter white special glass. I worked at a convenience store for a year and some change, I had a customer tell me they were CIA and were being hunted by terrorist. Turns out, the guy stays up for days at a time smoking meth.

@@SouthernOregonOrgani First time I used amphetamines I ended up being chased by the complete police force *and* the army, so I fled to the woods where I met a spy dressed totally in black with a black umbrella; it took me hours to find out that the only thing real was an encounter with a deer, everything else were trees and bushes morphed into spying soldiers, by my brain on speed (illusions). I can't really account for the spy dressed in black; that might have been the only full fledged hallucination.
What the Netflix documentary completely omits is his biography. Where and how did he grow up? Who were his parents? how did he develop these cunning schemes and methods that allowed him to escape international police investigations for so long? Never leaves a trace, has suitcases full of fake identities etc.? He's not a genius, so how did he manage all that and where did his knowledge come from?
There has been a lot written about Robert, he lived in an alternate reality from childhood.

There is the chronicles of narnia series and in the first movie one of the brothers, Edmund, falls for the snow queens lies. "I will make you a prince and let you eat sweets everyday." she tells him.
In reality, after she succeeded in playing him, she treats him very badly.
Well, long story short, his siblings rescue him and they defeat the evil queen. He and his siblings then live happily ever after.
Well, flash forward a few movies and now the siblings and Edmund return to Narnia. They are now on a quest to defeat another evil bad guy. At first they search for Aslan, the good lion (God figure), but cannot find him, and they are very very much need help to defeat this evil. They cannot do it on their own.
Its only then they come to a spiritual/magical cave where they see the evil queen frozen in ice mirror as a ghost. She can talk though because she is a ghost, and she asks them to free her and in exchange she will help them.
Edmund, knowing her personally, knows this is a trick. However, the other siblings don't know her well and believe her speech, and almost do it.
As this happens, you see her trying to convince them again and again by talking, and then she tries to take only one under her spell and convince that person.
Edmund then takes matters into his own hands and shatters the ice mirror, so the evil queen can no longer talk to them.
When it does, all the siblings (except Edmund) blink and shake their heads as if waking up from under a spell.
They all look at him.
"I know" is all Edmund says, as if to say "Yes, it's like that. Yes, she is the convincing. Yes, she is that evil."
And sociopaths/psychopaths are like that. They talk big, but their words are illusions. Always.
We, here in the UK, would diagnose Robert as a 'wrong 'un' or a 'right bastard'!

I wish there was a website with a list of people who are serial abusers. It would have saved so many lives, especially female lives. After I left my abuser, he went on to hurt others and from the looks of it, he's become a monster.

I find it astounding that the prison system allowed a known predator loose to run free and con even more innocent people. Will they be to blame when he inevitably fleeces more victims? Because he will.
the kind of crimes he committed do not carry hefty prison terms. He is mostly convincing people to hand over money by telling lies. Sadly - so many gullible fools out there. Nobody thinks to check with the police if this guy is really MI5. Many did not buy his lies so he moves on - and we just hear about those who did fall for his spiel.

I was watching one of your earlier videos about hoarding which reminded me of the murder of Becky Watts in England. Most of the coverage I've seen has just focused on the murder and glossed over the apparent hoarding going on in the home of the killer/s. I'd be really interested in your assessment of the personalty and mental health issues in that case.

I just watched all three episodes of Puppet Master on Netflix. It was great. Thanks for the timely analysis Dr. G., and for explaining the kidnapping angle. It’s a sad, crazy story that ruined many lives.

I watched this. The puppet master on Netflix. I feel so sad for his two children and there father. ❤️My heart goes out to the children 🙏I'm absolutely shocked for all the others who had there life's destroyed by that evil monster
It sounds like he was akin to a cult leader, able to inspire excitement in his victims about a higher life purpose. Still, it is hard to understand how people can be deceived that such an extent. You would think that the "I'm a secret agent, but only you and I know about it, so don't tell anyone" trick would sound a bit suspicious.
Some of the tactics he employed re: making people suspicious of loved ones, controlling the money, keeping people working all the time so that they get exhausted, are all classic brainwashing/control moves employed by cult leaders.

Hi Dr. Grande! Obviously, I'm not an expert but here's what I think about your example of a woman driving herself to an empty plot of land under false pretences: if she can immediately leave on her own volition then it's not kidnapping. If she's repeatedly told via the phone that should she leave the empty plot of land would bring harm to her then in my opinion is kidnapping. Another example (although this will violate the empty plot scenario) is if she enters an empty building and the door would not open from the inside then it's also kidnapping. Or if there is indeed an empty plot of land that she enters and outside is a huge sign saying "Do not leave as you may die if you do so!" then that may also be kidnapping.
Although you may argue that the "empty plot of land" scenario is violated in the sense that messages do "enter" the plot to reach her. Naturally, we can further enhance this by saying: she drives herself to the empty plot of land with the knowledge that she may not leave that plot due to some danger. IMHO that's kidnapping.

If someone really was in MI5, would they tell you they're in MI5? BTW, isn't witness protection (at least in the USA) paid for by the government? People don't have to pay for the protection themselves. Thank you Dr. Grande for explaining why Robert's (if that even is his real name) conviction was overturned, but, shouldn't he have gone to prison for impersonating a federal agent?

MI-6 is an entirely different animal. It would be unlikely for someone to tell you they were in MI-6.

They'd likely tell you that they're a civil servant (unless you're a close friend or family), but when they won't tell you what part of the civil service, it's pretty obvious they work in intelligence. It's even more obvious when they live in or around Cheltenham (a town in England) as it's famously home to GCHQ, one of the key intelligence organisations.

I went with a friend and his friend who I just met. We went to an outdoor concert and this guy just drove over the sidewalk about 100 feet over the grass and right up to the entrance. Security and concert people came running out and this guy told us to go with it. He told them we were undercover sheriffs following a suspect and he convinced them to watch his beat up old truck. As soon as we got in to the concert area there was a thick wire crossing a sidewalk and he started screaming at this huge guy who was about 6’5” and the guy came at us glaring. This guy who’s about 5’4” stared right up at him and glared back at the giant and started screaming at him that we were with the city and here to inspect the setup and if he didn’t get done duct tape and tape that wire down he was gonna shut the whole thing down. The giant said “yes sir” and ran off and got tape and fixed it. Let’s just say that’s how the entire night went from the concert to a restaurant to a man all black bar he just could not turn it off and just kept pretending to be cops or gov’t officials. It was exhausting. I never went out with him again and last I saw him he was in jail but that was years ago. This documentary reminded me of this guy except the movie guy did it long term and our friend did it for immediate goals.

Oh yay!! I was so hoping you'd do a video on this guy. I hope that Sandra gets away from this conman and reunites with her 2 kids and her ex-husband. They are really suffering and I'd have to guess that she is too.
I love Sarah's father. Wise, decent man. My father was like him, loving and supportive of his children for life.
He was onto the lies from the first. He said his years looking after cattle had shown him that a very ill animal will move very differently from the healthy ones. He asked the guy faking terminal cancer, "Just how ill are you?" and the poor guy started shaking. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for Sarah to learn that she'd been living a lie for ten years. She must've needed "deprogramming" like when people get out of cults. I feel so bad for Jake and Sophie, not having seen their mother for seven years. Robert Freegard is truly evil, totally ruining people's lives and causing so much suffering just to bleed them dry - not just of money, but of confidence, human contact, their very identity, their ambitions and all their hopes and dreams. The money was one of his motives but he obviously got off on controlling people as well.
He screwed up - I would never have let my daughter go in that circumstance. I would check his identity there and then and call the police. If he objected it will expose them to danger I would say I am prepared to take that risk and make the call.

Thanks for publishing this interesting case example on how con-artists can be so good at manipulating the perception of others regardless of how intelligent they are only because they are not that aware of how someone with a personality disorder might behave in different settings.

I don't know how people fall for this. I'm from DC and while growing up, knew a couple of people who could admit that they worked for the FBI. People who do covert work for the NSA or CIA don't tell you that's what they do. They certainly don't go around telling idiotic college kids that they're agents. Anyone who tries to get your money or get you to do things for them (legal or illegal) while telling you they are some kind of secret agent is a criminal trying to take advantage of you.

This shows the incompetence of our government and the legal system. That they cant arrest a guy who has done so much damage,pain , suffering, years of metal abuse and keeping them mentally captive.

I've met people who lied outrageously, and they give off little clues. It's amazing how many people just ignore every clue. Not that I haven't been ridiculously gullible in my time...but someone telling you to lie and pretend and deceive people... You wonder why they'd do it.

Yay! I love when dr grande does an episode on something I commented about before. This story was crazy. I can’t believe that one girl was on the run for 10 years. And he only got 200,000 from her family…. That’s 20,000 a year which isn’t much considering he was having to house and feed her. I mean he was puttin her who knows where but still. Just seems like so much work for so little reward.

I went to school (by which I mean primary and secondary school, rather than in the American sense of university) in Newport, which is the nearby town. So the university is far closer to my house than even my schools. N.B. One needs to say “Newport, Shropshire” really, as there is a larger Newport in England (on the Isle of Wight, plus a far larger one in Wales). Anyway, it’s incredible for me to hear it mentioned on your channel, which in fact I started listening to in Edgmond in the first lockdown, just a few metres from Harper Adams fields. Thanks for the wow moment.
After pausing to write that I’m now listening to the rest. It should be noted that Harper Adams is not a very difficult university to get into, although its standards have risen quite a bit since it was just an agricultural college. In those days it really just existed to give degrees in tractor studies to young farmers who were going to inherit their parents’ land. (I wouldn’t have dreamt of going there under any circumstances, for example, although I’m still fond of it.) This may help to explain why the students were so very stupid.
Incredibly, I had never heard about this case. I suppose Harper has not really wanted to publicize it! There was once something about an I.R.A. bomb scare in a telephone box or something, but that might not have been related, or only related in that it inspired him. Being an agricultural college made it more plausible that there could be an I.R.A. presence.

I enjoyed this video after watching the three episodes just yesterday. What I am still left wondering however is why the lady spent 10 years traveling all over England and never considered leaving? I can understand falling into such a thing but not sticking with it for 10 years.

I had a “friend” many years ago. I believed the story he told about himself. But later I realized he may have been lying about everything. One thing I noticed is people like this will weave such a pack of lies that when one starts to question the new possible lies the old or first lies became accepted as the truth and not questioned. When in reality everything they have ever said was a lie.
I had a friend who would constantly make up stories. It's amazing how many people would join in with him and become trapped with his stories he could convince almost anyone into his way of thinking. He was very convincing and dangerous. He was driving himself crazy and he had a mental breakdown in the end. I had to cut him out of my life he doesn't know how to tell the truth.
