    What are your thoughts about 3D printing while in your office? I know there are studies that show PLA to be "safe". I print in PLA, PETG, ABS (rare) with my modified Creality printer. I used to keep my printer in my office and with PLA I would notice what felt like "allergies" or "sinus infection" type symptoms. Pressure in sinuses, felt like particulate in my nose, and a weird scratchy feeling in my throat. I experimented with this a lot and came to the conclusion it would only happen while printing. I moved my printer to my garage. But I'm at a point in my garage organization where I'd like to move the printer back into my office, but considering a new printer or building an enclosure with filtration. So I'm curious since you worked for a 3D printing company and have some fancy printers, what your thoughts on that subject are.

    I would really love to pick your brain about 3D printing with titanium. I’ve done a good amount of more traditional plastic printing but I’m trying to do my senior design project on 3D printed brake calipers for one of my schools old Baja cars

    • @OU81TWO
      @OU81TWO 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll need an industrial SMLS machine for that. Brake calipers also see too much load for them to be a viable option for 3D printing. They may last a few races but will eventually crack and fail.

    • @kyleburns9439
      @kyleburns9439 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      OU812 al the research I’ve done and companies I’ve talked to about outsourcing the printing have said it should be fine. I’m very aware of our max load conditions and would obviously design them with a higher safety factor than the AL 2024 versions we’ve been using for the last 5 iterations. I was more interested in learning about reliable analysis methods for the non-isotropic characteristics that come with 3D printing

    • @OU81TWO
      @OU81TWO 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kyleburns9439 Those companies just want your money so they'll tell you " it should be fine". I work for an aircraft engine mfr and we're printing in metal for prototyping. The materials can't be approved for production because there are too many variables at play which cannot guarantee the mechanical properties of the material remain consistent from one printer to another. Laser sintering introduces micro fractures and occlysions in the material. It's just a matter of time before materials develop fatigue cracks. You can't run FEA on something where you're not 100% certain of the grain structure. That's the problem with SMLS...the uncertainty. You would have to do an ultrsonic inspection of every single part to be sure. The majority of the parts wouldn't pass any way.

      I am an electrical engineer, and I hear this all the time; however, I started out as an electrician and tech before getting my degree... FWIW, I think both sides are right... and both sides are wrong. There's not enough cross over anymore, which leads to better understanding on both sides. But the blame is on companies, not employees

    Great video and great space and I have lots of questions as I'm just getting into 3d printing and trying to learn as much as I can before my printer arrives. I just subscribed and gave you a thumbs up because I think I could learn a lot from watching your videos. First off I'm confused about storing filament. Some of the videos I have seen are saying the filament should be stored in an air tight container with a small dehumidifier inside the container with the spools. Supposedly the filament will absorb moisture if left out in the open air. I noticed yours is all out or just laying loose in a drawer so whats the real deal? Also where, or are you venting your 3d printers such as your Mark Forge? I didn't see any hoses or anything so maybe your not. I'm planning on mainly using PLA or PETG so do you think I will need to vent that if I'm printing in my house in my craft room? If so are there filters available to vent into that will filter the air good enough is say I was printing ABS? Thanks again for the video and if you could help answer these questions it would help clarify some things that I am confused about.

    Just watched this video. We are looking at installing 3D printers, like the Markforged (can't talk too much about it), on submarines and all naval surface vessels. We are working with NASA (they too are interested for the ISS and Mars) and currently conducting atmospheric studies for contamination of any off-gases based on 3D printing. The versatility of this looks extremely promising when parts are in short supply and/or non-existent.
