    Again, I feel like I slap my forehead whenever I watch one of your videos. So simple, yet we make it soooo complicated! Love ya work!

    The example you showed by getting down on all fours is exactly how I was trying to explain this to some 4H kids last summer. You see such a focus on the "head set" that people don't realize the head comes when the rest of the horse is in the right place. The kids always see the well-trained horses with their heads low, not realizing it's a whole body thing. Making them get on all 4s and do this themselves seemed to get the idea across.

    In one of my first lessons with my new horse my trainer had me get on my hands and knees and do this to demonstrate how collection works. It makes so much sense now.

    This is really helpful. I have an appaloosa jumper mare that I'm trying to teach to go into a frame. I realize now that I messed up in her training and I need to go back a few steps and reorganize her body.

    Amen! Fix the back end, the front end comes into "line", no matter your discipline.

    How do you get their weight on their hind end and “organize” their body?

      Abigail Autumngate yeah howw?

    • @JumboJimbo100
      @JumboJimbo100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      to get the weight on the back hold the reins-(not pull) and ask him to go with your seat and legs if necessary. The horse will then go "round" and then you follow him down. Note the "hold" on the reins will just be a fraction of a second but may be very strong for that fraction. If the horse is used to going "inverted" he will pop his head right back up and you have to do it again, and again and again. It won't be a quick fix but gradually the horse will understand. On young horses it will be quicker. After he is down the rider must follow the horse very softly with the reins. Good Luck let me know if this helps

    Ok but what about showmanship? How do people do that? I can’t get my horses head down in showmanship, he’s ok when I’m riding him but whenever I pick up a trot in showmanship it takes him halfway across the arena to get his head down, I’ve tries saying down down down down to him over and over until he puts it down then saying good boy and keep trotting for awhile longer then stop but it’s seems to be going slow with very little improvement

    But...how do I then get my horses BODY in the right position so their head is down????

    • @WarwickSchiller
      @WarwickSchiller  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly all the lateral work will do it, basically if you get them to engage their core and lift their shoulders, and they are relaxed, the head will hang down.

    • @LorryMLewis
      @LorryMLewis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WarwickSchiller Do you have a link that can teach me how to engage in "lateral work" or specifically HOW to engage their core? I just acquired my FIRST horse-a 14 year old gelding Arabian and trying to learn all I can on how to be an effective leader to and for my horse. I appreciate all your input! Lorry

      @DutchIsraeli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would also love a video on how to organise their body and engage their core... I have no idea what these words even mean :) but I do really understand now how the back/head thing works biomechanically, thanks for that!

    • @tropicaoptica
      @tropicaoptica 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Free info on TH-cam from Arttoride on how to use lateral work to get a horse to engage and lift its back and use his hind end and stretch down and out, all while keeping a cadenced rhythm and strides that don't shorten upon eventual collection. No rollkur. No breaking at the third or fourth vertebrae. Creates a relaxed horse that enjoys the work, and never anxious. It is classical dressage foundation training BUT, it applies as a foundation for ALL disciplines. If your horses is messed up, and been hollow his whole life, it can take a lot of time to correct, but so worth the patience and effort. They also really go into proper saddle fit. So many horses are being ridden with poorly fitting saddles and causes a whole host of problems.
