You'll just have to sit back and deal with the truth.
This guy does it as a mean to sustain himself, he seems well educated for someone that seems to be isolated, and most of the people bitching probably do nothing to help animals besides cry about it and live comfortably.
Considering hes from canada which has a pop. Of about 30 mil. And his territory alone doesnt have that many people in it. I would say 20k subs is pretty good
Ok is this joke or not if it’s a joke I’m not mad but if it isn’t I’m mad a you because he skins them sells the fur for money so he can pay bills and make a living and probably eats them.
Something I find humorous is that people that are against trapping and the fur trade also tend to be against oil yet aren't informed enough to understand that most synthetic fibers used in clothing manufacturing are derived from petroleum. Fur is a renewable resource that is quite literally as green as it gets. It's naturally occuring, doesn't require large expanses of space to grow like cotton and is a better insulator than cotton, supports conservation through the sale of trapping licenses and gear, and doesn't require constant human involvement like raising sheep for wool.
it also destroys the animals, in many cases to extinction. we no longer have any justification to clad yourself in animal skin. further more not everybody is ignorant to the fact what all syntactic materials are made of! :) the point being, we have plenty alternatives between these two extreme options. the reason why we don't stop is simply because we are greedy, unsaturable and short sited.
large companies tend to strip an area of it's resources, taking so much the species or habitat can never recover. One guy in such a large area probably doesn't even make a dent in the lives of the animal there.
ClassyFedoraLover2 pretty sure canadian law prohibits that. also since he's native hes one of the few that can do a lot of trapping, everyone else is regulated.
vice does a video about eating dogs....comment section loses it's collective shit. vice does a video about fur trapping....people are understanding. interesting the different attachment people have to different animals.
Most people only care if it's cute they don't give a shit if you kill loads ugly animals but as soon as you kill like you said a dog it's "oh no save the animals". Every one does it (including me) it's just natural but people should be less hypocritical about it

Nice title for the video.... Completely erasing any chance of having a real dialog about the Trapping industry, Culture and frankly the livelihoods of thousands of Canadians who are, by right. Through hundreds of years of wars and dialog going to continue to trap fur. You want a example of media propaganda? But Andrews Channel is by far my favorite TH-cam channel LMAO Fucking eh bud

Eric Torres that's the thing even back in Michigan things like this were allowed because it didn't hurt the population. I think some forms of skinning and hunting should be illegal world wide because it's literally killing off a species.
Eric Torres the funny thing about that is that if you want to save endangered animals. You just farm the crap out of them, worked for the bison, alligator. If people really cared about these animals then that is something that has been proven to work
I'm against the Chinese fur trade for it's brutally obscene practices. Seriously, don't look it up - you're gonna be traumatized forever. Compared to that, this guy - who quick-kills animals he captured and DIDN'T keep trapped in a tiny cage for weeks before skinning them alive - is downright humane. If there is such a thing as the right way to harvest fur, then this guy is definitely doing it.
Canada has actually done a good job in making humane trapping and hunting practices the normal. My grandfather was an aboriginal hunter and trapper, so its been nice to see how much farther ahead Canada is in humane trapping compared to other countries.
We visit Andrew's remote cabin in the northern wilderness to go full tilt into the Canadian trap life-trapping beavers, skinning an otter, and learning the best way to deal with two frozen 160-pound wolves infected with mange.
VICE What this guy does is completely wrong in my opinion. These people spending all of their time killing animals and removing them from their natural environments with an obvious lack of knowledge as to what effect that might have. Disregarding the cruelty aspect, what would happen if China decided that they wanted more and more pelts. Bad luck if you're an otter or lynx, this is just not sustainable. I am a hunter and shooter and I believe that anyone should be able to provide for themselves with food and use whatever parts of the animal for themselves. But living out there killing animals for fashion statements and exporting to a country that has no regard for the natural environment is sad destruction. Farm animals for fur, whatever, but removing them on mass from nature so someone can make a short term fashion statement is absolutely fucked.
Great segment. Love it. I love Stanley. He’s a good man. He loves the land. He loves these animals and respects them. He does not condone torture of these beautiful creatures he’s a man of the land. What are you?
Theres lots of us up here in Canada that trap, hunt and fish, including myself. Im proud to be able to show the world what we do and to educate people.
gareth thwaite Yes, we had a cold snap here in Australia not long ago, it never gets cold here, so I went out and bought a cheap $30 jacket, it was cheap fake leather, and had cheap fake fur collar on it. I was approached by strangers in the street who railed on about how bad I was supporting the fur industry, and blah blah blah they skin animals alive, club baby seals ect ect. I responded how anyone should in the situation and told them to fuck off and kept walking. They followed me ranting and raving for a good 5 minutes until a passerby pointed out the obvious that it was a cheap kmart fake leather jacket. So yes, people do comment, people are that stupid. Never underestimate human stupidity.
Dylan West Obviously not otherwise you wouldn't of made that comment ^. The majority of the worlds natural grains are being fed to the animals which humans are then eating when instead those grains could cure world hunger. There is no need for humans to depend on animals any more, it's time to evolve and leave them in peace.
I can't understand the hate andrew gets. If you watch his videos you realize the immense love and respect he has for nature and trapping. I look up to him.
madman3470 ur not fucking going after people who eat meat so why go after this guy. it exactly the same; the animal dies. Humans are the predator, animals are prey. fucking get over dude!
wtf? why the fuck not. Ur watching a video based in Canada which was a British colony so i have every fucking right to have my picture as a union jack!
true but the fact that we kill animals, allot of the times unnecessarily, just to wear them, is ridiculous. theres tons of other resources for luxurious clothes. some people just plain n simple have their head up their ass
I always thought it was funny how people will threaten to kill hunters; you're threatening to kill a human being for killing an animal. Get over it; at least the animals he kills live their lives outside an enclosure.
It's pathetic lol A bunch of pussies that are too stupid to learn how to hunt have to use tricks to catch animals, and they're not even making any money out of it... so no, it's actually not a "way of life", if you listened to this video, all these trappers aren't making enough profits because skins are just not profitable lol yet they still do it due to their lack of resourcefullness. How pathetic can a person be lol Like seriously... it's not even profitable lol can't even make a living with it lol ooomg.... companies are making hundreds of millions from THESE peoles work lol I'd shoot myself if I busted my ass, and didn't even make enough to cover vet bills, yet some hot shot made 100k from MY work?! Are you fkn kidding me lol The fur-trade is a complete joke! It's unfair that all these people are so stupid that they're letting companies take advantage of their ignorance. Eh, just.... good lord, it's dumb on so many levels lol
I'm an aboriginal guy from the north and I gotta say some people don't understand that trapping and hunting is apart of our culture and way of life we have tremendous respect for the land and animals and I am proud to be from the NWT and be an aboriginal from the NWT
Since this first aired the trapping industry has taken a down turn. The past few years have been very slow for the fur market. Trapping is an odd dichotomy. As a trapper since the mid 60's I love to watch the videos of trapping in the north country. Most will never understand the challenge of catching, the love of the outdoors, the sounds, the sights, the smells and the appreciation for beautiful animals that you catch, as well as the pride taken in preparing hides for auction, skinning, scraping, stretching. Only a trapper can, with eyes closed, identify animals by feel and smell. With all of the hard work that goes into it, those with good jobs in cities would never consider trapping worth the effort for the monetary reward. Incidentally, otter are at the top of the list for a beautiful fur, the best. And yet at the same time, though there are so many things that drive the spirit in this pursuit, there is no joy in dispatching amal's as some on the outside might like others to believe, just a part of it. With the many aspects of trapping, as the sun is beginning to set in my life, besides fur trapping, I find through trapping there is still much to be involved in, research programs, restocking and relocating of wildlife that is equally rewarding. With changes occurring so rapidly, when I look back over the decades I'm so glad I took advantage of what opportunities there were that is many areas have all but vanished. So many things are a one time event never to be repeated.
I have been a trapper since the late 70's and have been a subscriber to The Wild North from the beginning. Andrew has been a testament to fair, honorable harvesting of animals for fur and meat from the beginning.
Farmer Nate The animal population shouldn't need human control. And I don't think making clothes for pricks to display as a sign of wealth can qualify as "good use".
Captain Ironbutt Really many people don't realize how valuable of a resource hunters and trappers are to a nation like Canada. I'm not sure how many conservation officers there are in Canada but what I do know is there is not nearly enough. In my time as an avid outdoorsman I have only ever dealt with one conservation officer and it was in a very popular ice fishing spot. The point of that is they can't be many (if any) places at once and likely have a specific reason to go where they are going. There are over 2 million hunters however and in a country with about 32 million that's a good chunk of people. All it takes is a survey to a certain percentage of this 2 million and you would have a good gauge on where animals tend to congregate and how many could be there. Still though, even 2 million isn't enough of a population to track the animals in the second biggest country in the world.
Since the beginning of the industrial era and really any record of human advancement, the general animal population has been cut in half, if there's any animal that needs to be controlled it's us.
I wish people who get upset about trappers could remember when back in the day this was a big economy and source for food. I love animals and would never buy furs but at the same time this has been away for survival for decades.
As a rural Canadian this actually was really interesting to watch. Trapping and hunting is second nature to many of us. Seeing pelts in stores, myself and many people in the community, will look at the quality as almost a mark of pride to that area. What people forget is that many of the animals we hunt for fur have very large stocks and in the case of beavers, wolverines and lynx can be very destructive building dams or killing livestock. This is population control, there are so few trappers on such huge tracks of land you could work day and night and never deplete the stocks. You're all so focused on the fact it's going to some fashionista somewhere. If it was going only to local native populations people would praise it at "keeping their heritage intact". Remember that other cultures have different traditions and ways of life, and from the other side of the glass the idea of living in a giant city full of crime, drugs, and pollution we think most of you are crazier then us. PS- 100% he does eat some of the meat he catches. Beaver is very good eating, as for wolverine or lynx I've personally never had it but I've been told carnivores taste like shit.
Don't be mad at the trapper, be mad at the people who want to wear the animal fur. Because they can't just wear a normal coat, NO they have to have wild animals die so they look good.
People need to learn that trapping helps regulate the animals. Much like humans we breed out of control and like everything it needs regulations, those who are saying oh its cruel. Its not. Trapper for 8 years so come at me.
How do people think the Native Americans lived? Or colonial americans? Theres a reason the Vikings called the natives "leather skins." Almost all articles of clothing from natives were leather with beads added for decoration. And what do people think this trapper does with the meat? He eats it. It feeds him and the fur creates clothing.
Just an FYI for people who don't know: the fur market is absolute garbage rn. Fur prices are soooooooo down. Don't let this make you think that fur harvesting is easy money because it's really not.
It's been said before, but I'll say it again. In case there's any Americans out there who think we all have that heavy accent... we don't. That shit's too legit to quit. LMFAO
His view on conservation is actually really forward thinking compared to most peoples, alot of people get disconnected from nature and forget that this has been done for ages to survive...
Andrew is the shit!!! I watch all of his videos, glad to see Vice went to see him and give him some love! Just realized it was posted a year ago, and Vice you should change the name of the video to a visit with Andrew of the north or something a bit more respectful to Andrew...
he doesn't hunt the same area consecutively...he respects the animals cycles and allows them to breed. He doesn't hunt young animals on purpose and dispatches them as quickly as possible. Him and his ancestors have been doing this for many years. He's a good man.
as with all natural resources they need to be managed. so that you dont over balance the system. when done properly you make the animal population healthier hence stronger
Andrew is a true conservationist who works his ass off to make a living. He may not have the same image as 5th Avenue executives, but his life is real, gritty, and full of self-determination. We all should open our minds to this real individual.
Mert Millz Its a cigarette tube press, you take your tobacco of choice and place it in the machine, then you take a premade tube and slide the tobacco in with the machine. A hella lot cheaper than premade cigarettes.
If the animals weren't culled, then there would be mass starvation if there was too high a population to sustain themselves. Judging by the area hes in,plenty of wildlife from what I can see.Hes native, doing the same thing the tribes have done since creation.I cant see any environmental damage. The man is supporting himself and not on benefits. He is improvising and doing what he has to do.
They can't. We are the dominant predator, if they could, I'm sure they would. Don't mean to sound like a dick by saying that. For example I think that if a bear kills a person it shouldn't be put down; nature does and nature pleases...
Most indigenous people around the world live like Andrew . My mob in north Queensland hunt animals everyday and people don't understand because they get their meat of a shelf at a shopping center . Turtles and other animals are respected and don't know what hit them and we thank the animal for keeping our family strong and healthy .
There are many reasons why most people don't wear fur today. One important one is because it's cruel and unnecessary in today's modern age. Today we have many other materials which are warmer and lighter. Want a warmer and heavier coat? They got that too, just like fur! We know these people make their money by skinning animals but all this killing is completely unnecessary. Btw, what they show here looks a bit "humane" because the animal is already dead. However the commercial fur industry is a horror to the animals because they anally electrocute animals to death so that the fur doesn't get damaged. Most interestingly most animal fur comes from China, where dogs are caught and sold as fox fur. It's a real life horror story and the animals are living it. Please don't support this horrid industry.
Mr Lister The Sister Fister Eating a little meat (thumbsize) per day, is good for the animal, if eaten with great love. It elevates the animals vibration a little. While it isn't a good thing to kill animals. The sins of another person don't pass on to third parties... When we don't abuse our need and bless our food that is. Blessing our food makes it so that the finer energy particles are also released :), and it does a lot more.. but I'm not saint yet so I dont know all :p). What this man does as a living or as a hobby is not good.. The animals will move on with their spirits, but the man is in trouble for a few lives I guess. Ah well, we can't hate another. That would be like hating yourself. For we are all part of the same big cake. Love is the best instrument for healing your own body. As it is the instrument to help heal this world.
A lot of you guys don't have a good reason to be angry at this guy. He doesn't work for a huge company where he kills tons of animals daily. This is what happens in every day life, you don't get angry at a lion when it kills a gazelle for food. That's because that's how life goes.
Andrew is a modern day environmental hero by show us the connection with the land and animals is the key to preserving this beautiful planet. Unlike many whom are far removed and disconnected from nature, trappers are sympathetic and grateful to animals they harvest. Their harmonious co-existance is forged by mutual reliance and dependance.
My uncle used to be a fisherman and would go seal hunting in Newfoundland. I know people complain about catching the seals but there are plenty of them. Many fisherman would die seal hunting and most had too to survive during the winter. Newfoundland used to be really poor and a lot of fishermen were not even paid. You were just given salt and supplies for your catch.
In school, we learn a lot about where Canada has come from and what solidified our nation. This is ongoing and continues even after you graduate school, because people will tell you personal stories of how they grew up or their parents or etc. I have an uncle who was a logger, a friend of mine had a dad who was a logger, I couldn't count how many people I've known and know who hunt, including my father in law who is from Northern England and would acquire different small animals for food on his adventures. Everyone I know fishes. Everyone. And camps. Canada isn't a very old country, so when it comes to anything that resembles "old ways", the majority of us are ALL about it. So, for people to insult and threaten someone who's upholding his culture, it's a little disheartening. He's trying to make a living, like anyone else. He utilizes as much as he can from the animals he traps in the most humanist ways he can possibly manage. And I don't think anyone realizes JUST how many animals we have up here. Seriously. Getting mauled by something, even if you're just on a trail ten minutes from home, is not that uncommon. I can't even count the number of times I've heard of eagles or owls trying to snatch a small dog from someone's yard. That is Canada, though. We are the wilderness. And most of us love it.

Get the fuck over yourself hippy, there will be no end to the meat and fur industries. You'll just have to sit back and deal with the truth.
This guy does it as a mean to sustain himself, he seems well educated for someone that seems to be isolated, and most of the people bitching probably do nothing to help animals besides cry about it and live comfortably.

I can get behind this guy, if he was working for a large company and trapping 10 animals or so per day maybe not so much
***** because animal preservation is important, large skinning companies are disgusting
***** immorality and capitalism goes hand in hand
ClassyFedoraLover2 Funny how we can bag on this guy while we drive our fucking pollution mobiles for hours every single day.
large companies tend to strip an area of it's resources, taking so much the species or habitat can never recover. One guy in such a large area probably doesn't even make a dent in the lives of the animal there.
ClassyFedoraLover2 pretty sure canadian law prohibits that. also since he's native hes one of the few that can do a lot of trapping, everyone else is regulated.
vice does a video about eating dogs....comment section loses it's collective shit.
vice does a video about fur trapping....people are understanding.
interesting the different attachment people have to different animals.

snsgym ethnic and cultural differences. race has nothing to do with it, really.
Most people only care if it's cute they don't give a shit if you kill loads ugly animals but as soon as you kill like you said a dog it's "oh no save the animals". Every one does it (including me) it's just natural but people should be less hypocritical about it
Paul Hayes you're correct and i understand the reasons behind it. i just find it interesting.

As long as this guy isn't hunting endangered animals, than I'm okay with what he's doing.
Eric Torres that's the thing even back in Michigan things like this were allowed because it didn't hurt the population. I think some forms of skinning and hunting should be illegal world wide because it's literally killing off a species.
Eric Torres thinking like that is how animals end up being endangered...
Eric Torres the funny thing about that is that if you want to save endangered animals. You just farm the crap out of them, worked for the bison, alligator. If people really cared about these animals then that is something that has been proven to work
It did show that he hunted down a lynx, an animal now endangered.
:c
I strongly Disagree man, as long as us humans live in this earth wildlife should be free and preserved infinitely.

***** He's eating them...
***** Yea, at like 11:20 or so he pulls meat out of a cooler and its in like a zip-lock bag, which he wouldn't get from any store or anything
VICE "Andrew didn't want us to tell you where he lived" so then you told us he lives in Hayriver 1 minute earlier, why?
I live a couple hours from him
VICE What this guy does is completely wrong in my opinion.

I love and respect my pets. They are beautiful creatures so I turned them into coats.
Theres lots of us up here in Canada that trap, hunt and fish, including myself. Im proud to be able to show the world what we do and to educate people.

How many of us wear leather? I know I do!
gareth thwaite I've got three pairs of leather boots and a belt. I am looking to furher my collection.
gareth thwaite Majority of leather products you see, from jackets, to couches are PU leather, which is fake and made from synthetic materials.
But would any comment if someone was wearing REAL leather
gareth thwaite Yes, we had a cold snap here in Australia not long ago, it never gets cold here, so I went out and bought a cheap $30 jacket, it was cheap fake leather, and had cheap fake fur collar on it.
Never underestimate human stupidity.
gareth thwaite Leather is from dead cattle, and not from the wild.

Dylan West Obviously not otherwise you wouldn't of made that comment ^. There is no need for humans to depend on animals any more, it's time to evolve and leave them in peace.
I can't understand the hate andrew gets. If you watch his videos you realize the immense love and respect he has for nature and trapping. I look up to him.

true but the fact that we kill animals, allot of the times unnecessarily, just to wear them, is ridiculous. theres tons of other resources for luxurious clothes. some people just plain n simple have their head up their ass

Isaiah Modeste I have a lot of respect for my father, should I go kill him ?

Hunting/trapping helps control animal populations. And the fur is being put to good use
Farmer Nate The animal population shouldn't need human control. And I don't think making clothes for pricks to display as a sign of wealth can qualify as "good use".
Captain Ironbutt hmmm so that means that you for massive animal die offs due to too many animals like deer, wolves, rodents, etc
Captain Ironbutt your first sentence I disagree you need to rethink that a little. The second sentence you sated is reasonable .
Since the beginning of the industrial era and really any record of human advancement, the general animal population has been cut in half, if there's any animal that needs to be controlled it's us.
Andrew P. Stanley, I’ll tell ya. You can’t possibly sound more Canadian than him and I absolutely love the guy.

Why do animal rights activists focus on trapping and hunting when farmers are raising cows to eat them
"Everything I survive is great!"
These are words we never hear as we take our easy, modern lives, for granted.
LJFrocksursocks it’s also soft and warm and it feels good when you know everything is natural

Ok
People need to learn that trapping helps regulate the animals. Much like humans we breed out of control and like everything it needs regulations, those who are saying oh its cruel. Its not. Trapper for 8 years so come at me.
Thank you for your service.
It's not endangered animals, it's done humanely and in moderation, I don't see a problem here at all.
