I've owned both a 2WD XJ Cherokee and a bone stock Impreza. It was interesting off roading in both because each could do things the other couldn't. The Jeep was 300 lbs lighter than the Subaru and had outstanding clearance, but the little Imp could mountain goat up stuff that the Jeep would start spinning on. I miss both vehicles a lot.

I owned a 04’ Outback for 10 years. After the head gasket repair, no worries. The rear opens up, providing an awning, and somewhere to sit to put on waders, and drink a beer. With the seats folded down, a 9’ fly rod fits, no problem. My son inherited it. Now my 04’ Honda Element (orange) AWD is my ride. Tailgate with a “canopy”, easy clean floor for wet/muddy boots, fly rod fits, great stereo, and it looks so dorky, no one takes me too seriously. Bonus is the rear window is huge for stickers of fly shops I’ve order crap from, that I’ll never visit.

The stereo is a must. Good road music playlists on home-burned CD's (I buy the original CD's and keep them in the fly tying hovel at home - gotta respect the artists who put them together) just what I want to hear instead of what somebody else's Pandora inflicts on me. My older son got a Blaupunkt stereo for my old Dodge... sounds make the trip to the river and the ride home.

I have a Tacoma and my wife has a 4 runner. I like the 4 runner better. But none of that matters. I'm here to hate on the "Overlanders". We just spent a week in Colorado and saw tons of overlanding rigs on the road. But absolutely zero off pavement. We were about 35 miles back in the San Juans and did see a sketchy looking dude in a Geo Metro with a 55 gal. barrel in the back though. He seemed interesting.

I live in the area and have explored many of the forest service roads and blm lands out here to camp/fish. I see so many of these “rigs” driving on the highway or parked at the pull outs. Based on how many I see the odds that I never see them in remote places doesn’t add up. The farther you go the more old beaters you see and cars that you wonder how the hell they got there.

Maybe it’s cos of being from a smaller country and not having millions of fly fishermen around, but the folks that treat their fly boxes like Fort Knox or hide their fly tied on while walking past you piss me off. If I come across someone new to the water I’m fishing or someone passing by on holiday I would usually give them three or four of the pattern of the day if they don’t have it to hand. We’re all out there to have fun and in my experience people having a good experience with other anglers end up being a lot better with etiquette.

The take on “gear on the outside guy” was so spot on. I see these people all the time but rarely in remote places. When I do see them off the pavement they’re usually parked at the beginning of a forest service road with all their gear sprawled out. The farther out I go the more I tend to see old beaters, myself included with an old Jeep WJ.

All except the roo bar have had real use - roo bar is insurance against incidents like my fishing buddy has gone through multiple times. Maybe Australian fishing tracks are less developed. 🤔 Keep up the commentary Ben.

Honorable mention should be any old suburban. Don’t forget those strap on rod holders. Here in Montana it is a total giveaway for a poser. Especially leaving them mounted in the winter time. Probably paid the shop to install it, and can’t figure out how to remove it.

    • @chuckstranahan5600
      @chuckstranahan5600 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, and the guy in the shop probably had to string the rod up for him before putting it in the carrier, and the guy keeps it there, strung up, big bobber and Perdigon and all, because he'd have difficulty doing it himself every time he went fishing.

First generation Tundra has been my rig for 19 years - no bigger than the current Tacomas. It replaced an old-school ‘92 Toyota pickup (pre-Tacoma) when the first kid came along and a back seat was needed.
My ribs are sore from the shrapnel comment!😂

Just re-watched this video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Where are Ford Rangers (older style) in the world of fly fishing?

I love the guy who said he drives a dodge and can't even fish a bobber right. On a serious note, my 97 tacoma's pushing a half-million right now. 5-speed 4-cylinder four-wheel-drive all stock. No way i'll ever be able to replace it. Has never let me down, stuck, or stranded. Yes, Tacomas rock. Nice job Ben, Keep up the good work.

My fishing car for 20 years was a VW Jetta Diesel 5-speed Manual transmission. I was getting better than 50 mpg and well I could go a long way on little money and fish a lot of states. I could get to most places that I wanted to go to. Where I could not well I got two legs. Since it was just only me, I had no problems with the room.

Keep it coming Ben! Regarding "the Euros", you should probably get some friends and take the month of August off to "caravan"! There's some things they absolutely do right.

A totally different story accross the pond!
The TACO type guys from the US drive Subarus in Europe.
The rest of us drive ordinary hatches/saloons/estates with basically no offroad capabilies as we barely need any when going fishing.

The chevy guy, its a company work truck. guys have to dig past the rod tubes in the tool box to get to any of the tools and I inventory my fly boxes while filling the 88 gallon bulk diesel tank. Fishing trip are 1.5 hours long after work 2-3 times a week.
